something i have realized is that it doesn't matter so much what it is you do, but who you are, how you interact with and treat other people, and your intention in your day and in your life. we have this unnecessary correlation with certain jobs or titles to our identity. but it doesn't matter what is written on your gravestone when you die. we each define our values every day in each of our actions. and we grow closer to our mind by engaging in activities and with people that enrich us and add color to our lives. i live for the intangibles. for changing my routine and meeting someone new, for taking a new path when i go running and seeing an armadillo or a rabbit, having a conversation with a random woman for twenty minutes in the sauna, feeling the ground beneath my feet, looking at the skyline on a drive. we can get so bogged down in our identity that we lose ourselves, and before you know it im not taking another route on my run or hugging my cat or reading books i like.
I've had so many jobs. One I really enjoyed was driving fork lift loading concrete sewage pipes onto flat bed trucks at the factory. I didn't need to work with anyone else. Just stack the pipes onto the trucks. And the fork lift was huge. You don't have to think about anything. Just stack the pipes.
@@PunmasterSTP They are really a lot of fun. I drove them in two jobs. One was small, in a warehouse and the other massive, in the factory yard. The tire was as tall as I was and to change it you needed two more forklifts. I did it myself but health and safety wouldn't allow that now. If the tire fell on you, well, that's that. But, who needs regulations, eh? What's more important, your life or your boss's profit margin?
I am 22 working in the meat/produce department at walmart. I am taking a break from a physics degree and love all science and stem. Before this I was a cashier and I was extremely depressed. I cannot sit still and do the same thing over and over while having already hitting a skill ceiling. What's nice about the meat/produce department is that every day is different. Every single day is a challenge because we get big palletes and it all needs to go out, the rotten fruits and vegetables on the floor need to be pulled out and replaced, we have to cut fruit, and at the end of the day everything needs to be cleaned. There is a process. There is a big learning curve if you want to be perfect and I love perfection. I'm thankful to be in this position and not a cashier. I'm still going to finish school but for the year that I'm here at least this part of it won't be spent thinking of offing myself everyday I have to clock in.
I was a poor project kid in Rhode Island. I found what I liked and excelled in it. I loved water, swimming. Started at Boys' Club and ended up with college scholarship. I was always good at math. I'd ride with my dad when I was 5 and he said what are you doing? I said I'm counting prime numbers. I'd look at all numbers out the window. I got BS and MS in math in the pre digital age. I worked in IT. Its true I found things I liked to do. My parents with 8 boys and 2 girls could not have contributed a penny to school.
TH-cam recommended your videos to me. I was touched by your story, so real. It reminded me a song by Diana Ross: do you know where you are going to. I also loved math and was good at it. My first job after graduate school was working as a system architect in an IT company. I got to work in both hardware and software areas. I loved it so much even when I needed to work overtime to midnight before product delivery. But I had to leave it because I had to move. Ever since then I worked in data analysis area. It's not my dream job, but I am good at it, and I don't hate to go to work each day. What I want to say is: just keep looking, don't stop, don't be afraid of trying, keep learning, at the same time try to be a little practical, one day you will be there, you will be satisfied with where you are.
I really appreciate the fact, that whatever you said is so obvious and simple to point out but so difficult for people to sink that in their mindset. Your words were absolutely gold. Keep it up brother, you will achieve great things in life. You have the wisdom of an old man and the passion of youth.
There is something beautiful about doing a job. About doing work. About producing something of value. There is a very enjoyable experience in a good work environment where you work together with others to meet the variable challenges of the day. I REALLY like this video and commend you for simply talking about life. It is fantastic to see how far your channel has come. Your description of the classroom experience is one of the reasons I also avoided it. Because it's not always about how well intentioned you are and with the purest of heart...the wrong system will chew you up. FINALLY, MAN, seriously, most people nowadays dont even know their own true passion at 18, the most decisive age to form your future, and some of them even acknowledge that it will take years and years of experience and exploration to know it. So, the question I always ask is, why try to desperately incorporate the concept of 'passion' which they don't even know for themselves, to their career, arguably one of the most important aspects/responsibilities to have in life, like it makes you a contract for the next couple of years in the future and take the majority of their resources and time?? No offence, but personally, I feel that some people actually misunderstand that a career that's in-line with their passion leads to a more content, happy lifestyle. Though, Its like what they always said, people's state of being, while external factors can affect it, what leads them to go down a better or worse path in life, in the ideal world that they're not forced by nature, ultimately, depends entirely on them (people might say that having a supportive figure is also important, then seek one, if you're already conscious that you need one, then persuade the closest people to you that you need their support, and whatever happens, of course if they still reject you, fine that's their decision, find other people that will bring you happiness, seriously there's abundant. But that applies to you too! When people ask for your support, see your circumstances and consider it, if you do, then support them wholeheartedly as well). Anyway, what I wanted to personally say is, is what message you exactly said in the video, "if looking for a job that aligns with your passion doesn't work or it doesn't feel satisfactory, then maybe, maybe if you could give it a chance, look for your passion in the work that you can currently do?" Because even if everything I said before is inaccurate, looking for a job that aligns with your specific passion can be soo consuming, either time, resource, or it's a crumbling industry, in which case, the quote I used can definitely fit to be used as an advice, for those who want to grow further. Anyway, thank you for the video, glad I'm not alone on thinking about this.
So much of life is luck though, some people just follow their passion and things just slide in place for them. Some people find their soulmate at 17 at just stay together for life, others just never do. Its a grave realization when you understand how random things are. But the only way to deal with it, is just to find meaning in your current circumstances, surely wont get better by pondering all that could have been.
Loved this. But what I really got is that you were still in the process of following your passion. And will always be. Life is a series of passions. Doesn't have to be just one. Or it can be a finding of yourself. And the cool thing is you are still finding yourself. And that must never end....or life becomes death. ❤
Teaching is the hardest job I've ever done. You said you taught in a private school and I'm assuming you had minimal training - privates do not require formal teaching qualifications - but the first year is a baptism of fire even for folks who've been through teacher training programs. My first year I had a class of 80 - many unruly students - with an awful text book and terrible program. Not sure how I survived that. My mom had a similar experience, teaching elementary school in the early 50s, with a class of 60 kids - the boomers flooded and overwhelmed the school systems. Not enough buildings, not enough teachers, not enough anything.
If you enjoy solving logic problems consider training as a CCNA Cisco Network engineer or Ruckus etc. It's a rewarding, well-paying, in-demand career that leaves your mind free when you're not at work. Blessings.
Just start teaching again. Start at a lower level and work your way up (maybe elementary). I have a lot of friends who started teaching right after college and they found it extremely difficult (especially the middle school level since kids start developing a attitude at that age). Take it one step at a time and remember that there is no rush
The meaningfulness of work - whether it has any meaning at all, depends a lot on you. Studs Terkel published Working in the early 70s. You don't hear much about it any more but it was a really big deal when it was published. This is the question he was looking at. Another more recent book about working is Nickel and Dimed, Ehrenreich.

At 66, I tend to agree with Scott Galloway ....do what you're good at. The sense of accomplishment and confidence in your work is very satisfying
