A correction for you Octopimp. One key thing about the entire story is that AM is not omnipotent. He is close to omnipotent, but not totally. That is one of the key points in the novella.
It's an understandable mistake given the shit AM is capable of. I mean if he can make five random people immortal I'll give you a pass for thinking he's all-powerful.
Fun fact: this game was written by Harlan Ellison himself, despite the fact he had no idea what a video game was, he just typed scripts on a typewriter and sent it to the developers. He also voiced AM.
So... from 4:02 to 4:18, be prepared to be retroactively horrified after you have played the game. Ellen! Remember the pain? Remember the many caverns which you felt the pain? Now, now, don't start to cry, it's only pain. Also at 4:38 "But be careful dear, look all around you... the only woman in the center of the earth, and these filthy creatures with you are men. Just a sweet warning Ellen, my love" If you play the game or read the story once you know that AM is fucked up, if you do it a second time you know the extent to which he is fucked up
To sum up what the Psyche Profile does is tell you your character's flaws so you can get a hint on what to do to overcome them. However, if you use it too often, your character will go nuts from AM knowing so much about them.
TheGameGuy. I agree with you. He is avoiding the AM's opening dialogue to the five characters. Why can he wait until the dialogue is finished their parts? So annoying.
A couple of years ago I'd sent you an email recommending this game and I was so beyond overjoyed that you'd actually replied back to me! Seeing you play this now makes me so unbelievably happy :D You are great :)
I've read the short story but... I never imagined that AM's ultimate hell would be making you do convoluted puzzles for all eternity. That's pretty weak-sauce, AM.
This game rules, but like most old PC adventure games, some of the puzzles and mechanics are really frustrating. Hope you guys can make it through! I have faith that Jesse can figure out the psychological aspects to these stories.
If these guys don't take it seriously enough for you I would recommend the twobestfriends playthrough. They explain a lot of what's happening and reference the book as well.
just a heads up for people who may not know this is based on a book with the same name . it has many themes of what it means to be human what happens when technology is able to think for itself etc it's a great read if u like darker themed books
YukoValis Sword Well, it didn't say she'd only EVER had sex twice, just that she'd only had sex twice by that year. She got married and ended up almost having a child, and of course she was assaulted, so she definitely had sex afterward.
@The angry. Not sure about that. It specifically said "You have had sex only twice in your life" sorta definitive if you think about it. The computer didn't just say that as an off comment, it was leading up to something that is meant to shock the player, like the rest of the game.
I think that Hellen's reaction to the color yellow is also a reference to "The Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte Perkins Gilman (TH-cam Audo Book Link: th-cam.com/video/I_vM37z8iek/w-d-xo.html ) which deals with repressed diagnosis of psychological maladies. Though I'm probably just another goon adding to a previous mention.
I was watching CinnamonToastKen's play-through a few years ago, but he's not very interesting. It's cool, the fact they got the original author to voice the computer. (Spoilers) Of all the horrible stories, they start with the rape victim? At least it wasn't the holocaust doctor.
I'm fairly certain the narrator is Harlan Ellison the author of the original story. If not it sounds a hellova lot like him, he narrated the audio book at one point. It gave me nightmares
It's not in this video, but they confirmed during the stream that Harlan Ellison does voice AM in this game. He's absolutely amazing, I'd love to check out audiobooks he recorded. Such a chilling, sinister performance!
I must owe it to Gog for fixing the game.. mostly. There are still some bugs, but at least you can BEAT the game. Many copies were sold in an unwinnable state. They took out the entire Nimdok chapter.
@@Thewritingelf Don't worry, that only means the construction of AM has begun.........................................................................................On second though, start worrying! AM's coming!
the aliens didn't build a pyramid out of stones the aliens built stones and suggested to the humans "hey I bet you can't stack them high enough to reach the heavens."
Jesse, if you are going to go old school, I HIGHLY recommend Stonekeep. It's an amazing game, back from the DOS/Win95 era, but graphically it still looks impressive. I forget what the art/animation style is called, but it's a hard rpg, proper secrets, a simple and yet in-depth combat system and it's been remastered and even on Steam. It's the predecessor to games like Legend of Grimrock.
ive been commenting for a looooooong time now i want to see them play the Penumbra series or Cryostasis Penumbra because itwas waaaay better then amnesia (same developers) and Cryostasis because davis gets to have a shotgun......but he'd find out soon it wouldnt help him at all
so we're just going to pretend that in the beginning of this whole thing this computer says it's name is Allied Master Computer, it's AMC and suddenly The Walking Dead makes sense. I would think that after 100+ years of endless torture you'd come to enjoy it and the concept of NOT being tortured would be the new torture, the worst thing AM could do now is butterflies and rainbows. "Slave Labor can do Aaanything"- Jesse Cox 2018
A couple things to add to that. The 109 years of torture is a reference to the 108 trials that your soul is supposed to go through in order to reach enlightement in the buddhism. So it implies that they've been through all of this and still haven't been released. Also, AM has shown that he not only possesses the ability to manipulate their bodies, but also their mental states, otherwise they would have become insane long ago. He can strip their memories and replace them at will. The last thing AM is going to alow is for his playthings to lose their value.
I have not gone into a fit of laughter this hard in awhile. When Ellen said "Muththuh" I lost it. I'm so glad you're playing this. It got dark as shit too. Oh 90s video games, how I've missed the rabbit holes they led to back then loool.
It is a long time since this game, but I genuinely hope you read this comment! I would love to see you play The Longest Journey. I think it is a game you'd love! It is about April Ryan who discovers she can jump between Year 2500 Sci-fi Earth and a fantasy world called Arcadia, while trying to find out why shit is getting fucked up! Point-and-click adventure with actual logical solutions and not moon logic.

Hey gang, bear with us on the first 5-10 minutes. The audio of the game is louder than us, but we fix it.
OMG! I am a little salty I missed this live stream. I've been [silently] hoping for you to play it for a few years now, all the better with Octo too.
Jesse Cox love you Jesse! Take care bye! 🍄💋🍄💋
I'm so excited to see you guys play this
I did not expect this.
Jesse Cox
fun fact, the guy who wrote the short story is the same guy who voices AM
He was also a conceptual consultant on Babylon 5
didn't know that one, that's pretty sweet
He also wrote the script for the game, it’s canon to the short story
I don't like the voice. It's not very threatening.
@@purpleblah2 Wait ! I didn't know it could be considered canon
Still sassy after 109 years of torture, that's some Illidan shit right there

The dialogue largely written by Harlan Ellison himself. He also does the voice of AM.

oh SHIT
PSA: This game is DARK.
Very dark. Like, 'Silent Hill has nothing on this game.' Dark.
To sum up what the Psyche Profile does is tell you your character's flaws so you can get a hint on what to do to overcome them. However, if you use it too often, your character will go nuts from AM knowing so much about them.
"Yeah the audio isn't mixed very well" *Continues to talk over barley audible dialogue*
TheGameGuy. I agree with you. He is avoiding the AM's opening dialogue to the five characters. Why can he wait until the dialogue is finished their parts? So annoying.

Jesse you absolute madman, going with Ellen first.
Octopimp and Jesse TOGETHER? Yes please thank you
Coxtopimp.

NIMDOK!!!
GORRISTEEEEERRRRRRR!!!
I've read the short story but... I never imagined that AM's ultimate hell would be making you do convoluted puzzles for all eternity. That's pretty weak-sauce, AM.
"Nice trick, enter on one level and emerge on another" - That is what elevators do, not exactly a trick.
Yup. Top notch sarcasm from Ellen. Jesse and Octo keep missing it.

The empty chambers in the pyramids are probably just empty space between the structure. No need to fill the whole pyramid with stone.
I Have No Mouth and I Must Sass! - Ellen
I have no flatulence, but i must rip ass

crazyjak56 I completely agree my dude
Or Plague of Gripes solo LP he goes way more in depth on everything. But he's also kind of overly critical at times.
knowing plague, it probably means he likes it.
To be fair, they did start with Ellen. Her dialogue is gold. Now, if they started with Nimdok? That's a ball buster way to start this.
Plague of Gripes? Overly critical? Say it ain't so!
What if you combined this game with a game show? You could call it “I have no mouth and I must spin the wheel!”.
“TEEEEEED! COME ON DOWN!”
just a heads up for people who may not know this is based on a book with the same name . it has many themes of what it means to be human what happens when technology is able to think for itself etc it's a great read if u like darker themed books
I can’t explain why the streams for this game are my comfort videos, but here I am again and I love it
Nice to know Cr1tikal is still getting voice over work with that Anubis statue
Oh wow. . .This is a classic.
I know right?!
48:24 They finally make progress after chat telling them what to do
This is one of the scariest games out there I think. AM is terrifying. Also good luck with this game, it is very hard to get the best ending
Anubis: SHOW ME WHAT YOU GOT!
Computer: "you had sex twice in your life" Jesse: "I'd be her 3rd time!" Me (knowingly): yeah.. not after her second time...
YukoValis Sword Poor Jesse didn't know. 😢
@Geraldine. No, but he certainly found out lol.
YukoValis Sword Well, it didn't say she'd only EVER had sex twice, just that she'd only had sex twice by that year. She got married and ended up almost having a child, and of course she was assaulted, so she definitely had sex afterward.

Weird ass convo in the replies😭
The actress looked at the script and went ''What the hell am i looking at?''
So glad to see you playing this game! It's absolutely amazing!
Though it does suffer from pixel hunting syndrome a bit.
Jesse,Octo. AM locked ellen in a small yellow room as torture

This one of my favorite older games. Thanks Cox/Pimp!
You tell he's not a LPer since he's saving over the exact same save slot every single time...
Holy shit, it's insufferable how much they talk over voices in the game when there are no subtitles.
1:09:01 Octo's mind gets blown to bits for a good minute
They'll suffer so much with the moon logic.
Needs more "swallow" interactions imo
holy smokes, you are playing the best terror adventure gaqme of all time
Awesome, Existential Crisis the Video Game
Oh man, I almost forgot about this game. Need to replay
I AM what you say I AM.
And later you find out she has been wearing yellow contact lenses.
