I understand how good it feels when you make a customers day with some free food. I work at a bakery and we were 5 min before close and this elderly gentleman came in and asked for 4 custard tarts. We were completely sold out of custard tarts so I we gave him a free beesting (which is 2 cakes with cream and custard in the middle which is normally $12.50) and the look of joy on his face was priceless he said that it was his birthday and that nothing had been going well so far, so glad that we could help make his day better.

When I was a young kid/young teen I was homeless for months at a time... were talking like 13 or 14 years old... one of my friends told me if I went to subway and asked nicely they would give me some food.. He was right... For real, whenever I was my hungriest, I would go into any subway and just be honest.. Id tell them I was hungry and had no money, and literally every single time they would give me a 6" sandwich (usually premade behind the counter, idk if this was common in my area or what, or if they just make some random 6s outta the older bread)... I dont remember ever being told no, or to leave... legit, this is one of the reasons why as a grown man now, I don't mind paying 10$ for a tasty sammich... subway fed me when nobody else would... no joke... this guy isnt even an out layer.. subways everywhere are feeding the homeless youth of north america (im in canada)

I once got a free soda from a subway because the guy working at the time noticed I wasnt having a very good day and I didnt have enough for it. I was about to put it back but then he said just take it. I felt kinda bad about it but he was being nice so I was a bit happier in that moment. Just goes to show that some basic human kindness goes a long way.
To that guy who let me take that coke that time in august 2021, thank you for your kindness. I know you'll never see this but you livened up my day a little bit that day.

From a Canadian, getting rid of the penny sounds scary at first but it's so much better. As you mentioned, it's production cost is more than it's worth, so it's already useless in that regard. And it's just easier to round up or down to the nearest nickel so it doesn't really matter. Less change in your pockets, the government can save money on production costs and (hopefully) use that money for something more important. XD

    • @Just-Michael
      @Just-Michael 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

@@thatjokerperson7062 I would imagine it's not up to the corporations and is government regulated. 1 and 2 round down, 3 and 4 round up. Wouldn't be surprised if shady corps coded it into their systems to always round up, but luckily we can do the mental math so they'd never get away with it. And it only applies to cash, if you use debit or credit or whatever then you just pay whatever the price actually is. I was working in a retail store when the penny went away so it must have been around 2015, but it made counting the till and giving change so much easier.

Once a homeless guy bought a 6 inch and I made him a footlong for the same price, and let him stay in the lobby for 2 hours cause it was cold. This reminds me...I remember a very long time ago I was able to buy just the bread with mayonnaise and pepper for $1.24, but I guess now it falls under a certain category since it doesn’t have meat on it. I went in a year ago trolling the sandwich artist and it ended up costing me $7 because it was considered a veggie sub even though it had no veggies on it. And I only brought $2 with me because I really thought I’d win. The even more embarrassing part about it, I was first one in the line so everyone watched it unfold. I don’t believe in karma, but it was karma.

As a brazilian, the thought of getting rid of pennies is kind of daunting at first, but it's a hell of a lot simpler once all the pennies finally get out of circulation and no one has them anymore. There's no awkward wait for change of a single penny, there's less change in your pockets, there's higher tips for servants (since the new lowest is now 5 cents), the government saves money on the production, it's good for everybody.

The talk about giving away free meals to those in need hit home.
Back in 2019 on Memorial Day of all days, we had some pretty bad tornadoes here in Ohio, and I gave away quite a few free meals that night.
The one that always stands out in my mind was this father and his son came in and asked if they could just hang out for a little while as they waited for family to come pick them up, and talked about how they just lost their entire mobile home, and just barely made it to the bathtub with a heavy blanket over them before the tornado destroyed their place, the kid (who couldn't have been older than 5 or 6) you could tell just by looking at him was in shock trying to process what had just happened.
So I looked the father straight in the eyes (which is hard for me since I have Asperger's) and asked him what he and his son wanted, when he said he couldn't afford anything, I told him firmly "I'm not asking for money, this one is on me, order anything you want from the menu, even the steaks if you want. After what you guys have been through, you could use it".
They ended up ordering something modest, not taking the generosity for granted by getting something extravagant.
It may sound cheesy and cliché, but, that dumbfounded look on the father's face and the general improvement to the son's entire disposition made it more than worth giving away a free meal, and I don't think I will ever forget that moment.

I used to work at subway here in Straya. some teens ordered a bunch of footlongs and said "oh i dont have any money" and laughed, so I unwrapped one of the subs and started eating it in front of them. Their smiles dropped as i said "i get free food as an employment bonus, so thanks for the lunch babe!"
    they never came back.

We Canadians lost the penny a while ago. I for some reason also thought I'd miss it, but they're just worth so little. For a long time, the cost of producing pennies has been higher than their value, both in Canada and in the US. Many other places already have gotten rid of the penny and round up or down to the closest multiple of 5 cents.

People use to argue getting rid of the penny will drive up the cost of things.
    But that is false.
    If your item costs $5.97.
You pay $5.95, thus you saved 2c unless you use card payment.
Then your next item will cost $5.88.
You pay $5.90, you pay 2c more unless you use card payment.
    So you dont pay more.

A while ago I was in Montreal and I walked in a subway to shelter from a storm. I thought I would order 2 cookies (In Canada they always give 2 cookies). As I was getting my card out and asking for the cost, the one lady working there said "no don't worry about it" and I was a couple of times like "are you sure you're just giving away food like that?" As kind as it was of her, I always felt weird about randomly out of nowhere being given food from a business. But yea idk the story behind that but it's for sure incredibly kind and rare to give away food.
