      They were, but it costs a lot less and requires a lot less maintenance to have screens which is why they keep using screens. Its unfortunate but it costs Disney over 14 billion a year to run all their stuff so its safe to assume that Universal isn't that far off from daily operating costs

      they still do, their newer rides are technically way more enhanced than any of the old rides. but i think the presentation lacks the certain charme that these old rides had. in the old rides, every effect was a highlight on its own, but in the newer rides the effects dont seem that big, even tho they are way more complicated. i really miss the old rides. so glad i still got to see Twister and Disaster

      @@lutherheggs451 Nah. You're half right. Yes, trotting out sad screen rides is cheaper than practical effects. But no, with how much they charge and all of the money they make, they could give us the practical effects and still turn a tidy profit if people weren't gullible enough to pay top dollar for the sad screen rides with a smile on their face. They're just doing this to get even more profit. They're not in the poor house. Just look at how much less they were charging back when they had practical effects.
      But as we've seen. Guests pushed back enough that they had to stop building the screen rides, and Hagrids and VC have been top tier at least. Bourne was screenish... but at least its a great screen.

The only screen based ride ive liked is Mickeys Runaway Railroad. Thats an actual cartoon so it makes sense. But i will never wait more than 20 minutes for Avatar, Soarin, Kong Skull Island (saved by the ride vehicle and animatronics) Simpsons, or the like. Yes, i will give them all a try. Of course, it's tiny in comparison to the real thing I've witnessed. I have what is now a vintage Universal Twister Ride it Out shirt. Gotta love this classic film. I was a super big tornado nerd as a kid and dragged my parents into this attraction CONSTANTLY, just because the special effects and atmospheric tension were so good.
      I hope that by watching them reset the effects, that you were able to come out of the attraction with a newfound appreciation instead of ongoing fear or phobia. Empathetic team members like that mean the entire world to impressionable kids!

The parks were also very lightly attended. My 5 yro was pumped about going into this ride. His mom had to take him out of there. He was terrified. I actually was there for HHN 25 and got to be one of the people that got to experience before it closed a few nights before the closure. Absolutely delighted by that intro lmao...This was my favorite attraction at Universal Studios before its closure. I loved seeing all the practical effects come together, and Twister has been my favorite movie for my entire life. When it closed I remembered the lack of interest/jokes about it existing, but I always felt with an update/face lift it would continue to be a classic attraction. I understood it needed to be replaced but what a crappy replacement it got.
    I last experienced it the month before it closed. It was one of two attractions at the time that had a secret free tour available if you knew how to ask for it. Knowing the closure was coming, my family and I decided to see if we could do it. The tour involved the person manning the line radio someone to meet us and take us to an employee only door that was located in the que I did not realize was a working door in all the years it was open lol. They took you through a hallway in the back, where we were told some various facts on filming for the attraction (which did in fact include that the two actors weren't friendly when the attraction was being created). There was a bulletin board in the back with various photos from the movie set, and a picture of Helen Hunt with Bill Paxton that was signed by the two. They then lead us into the coolest part of the tour: the control room. Its at this point the original guide, who was pretty uninterested in this film/attraction lol..and mostly made a lot of jokes about it/jabs about how often bill paxton reminded you who he is, left us with the control room operator. She was a lovely woman older woman, who had been with the company for years. She told us about how much electricity was used to run the show, how many fans, the wind speed from each direction, the amount of dry ice it took to create the ability to see the tornado itself. We watched her first reset the attraction, then operate the attraction, saw how each effect work from above (the control room was behind the audience so you could see everything very clearly), and she spoke at great length about it all. I got the feeling we may have been the most interested people to attend the tour. Both the guide and her seemed surprised I loved the movie so much. When it was time to reset the attraction for the next group, she actually let me do it. Some of it she held my hand for it (literally), but some of it I got to do myself. It was awesome. Afterwards they led us down to the preshow areas to watch the films, then took us through the exit so we could watch it all reset up close. We were VIPs until we exited the attraction basically. When I finished watching that last show, I looked up at the control booth and saw her give me a big smile while she waved. Despite the ride closure, they did not allow people to take pics during the tour. I really wanted to get a pic with her because this was such a special moment/memory for me. I miss it every time I'm at the park. I really hope they bring it back someday.

      @Inurantchan 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ExpeditionThemePark I'm sad that much of that magic is sort of lost nowadays. MIB's tour is not nearly as robust or much of an experience at all really. It is cool how close you can come to an animatronic, but nothing really beat watching small details in twister reset I never even noticed before. It was a much more complete experience and one that really somehow remained a bit of a secret until the end.
      I really wish they'd add these little tours at some of their other attractions. They're great for people who are huge fans of the films the attractions are based on. ^^

    I was 8 in 1996, and I became weirdly obsessed with the Twister movie. I watched it at least a few times a week. A few years later my grandparents took me to Universal and I was COMPLETELY hyper focused on this experience. I think I made my grands do it 5 or 6 times. I convinced them to buy me the cow plush from the gift shop (which has been lost to time and I’ll be sad about it forever). When it closed before I could get back to Universal I was devastated. So the “too intense for kids” thing is most likely just parents being overly sensitive, I was all about it as a kid and wanted so badly to experience it again as an adult.

    Ngl, even though the actual experience was toned down from the original concept, it was still scary as hell. Given, the last time I experienced Twister in Orlando I was maybe 15 but I'd probably still be just as terrified now. Being from the west coast, I've never been through an actual twister and pray that I never will. That experience is only a fraction of the terror and destruction of an actual tornado and it made me really think about what people go through in tornado alley during these deadly storms. Despite it not being Universal's intention to educate or spread awareness necessarily, it certainly had that effect on teenage me

(We only need it to enhance our game to make it as accurate as possible. For that reason, we will not leak it to the public, and only need it for ourselves because we may have some details that we may have gotten wrong and want to fix. We also would like to learn more about how they made the attraction, and these footages show a lot and would mean a lot if we may have some of them.)

    I was 6 years old when we went to universal studios in 98 and this is the one ride I will forever regret freaking out and leaving. I remember everything about it so vividly and then I got hit with wind right before walking in and I got terrified 😅

    This ride is one of the ones that most sticks out in my brain from my 2011 trip to Universal. I hadn’t seen the movie other than maybe 10 minutes on TNT one time, but afterwards it pushed me to check it out.
    The intro is GREAT, this ride was great, this video was a banger from beginning to end.

  • @Orionzeus05
    @Orionzeus05 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    The scariest part of that ride was when the roof and floor of the audience stands fell at the end of the show, it was loud and a crazy slight drop.
    A truly fantastic ride, a crime that it was replaced by a Jimmy Fallon ride

    Universal Studios should build a "Lost Universal" section onto their park and bring back all of their past rides sort of like what Kennywood did with their Lost Kennywood section.

    I really loved this attraction. When I was 12 (just after the film came out) I sent a storyboard for a Twister themed attraction to Universal Studios. I got a very nice response back explaining that they didn't accept unsolicited material. But my idea was broadly very similar to the final attraction - accept it involved a few more scenes and live stunt actors.

    I haven't finished the video yet, but I had to comment. Having 'ridden' Twister several times, the opening acting was spot on. I had tears of laughter in my eyes. My family would make lots of "I'm Bill Paxton" jokes

    • @shanaziolko5157
      @shanaziolko5157 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Loved the video. Twister was great because it was a physical experience. I went to Universal Florida recently, and the amount of screen based rides was annoying, especially for someone who can get motion sick from them. I think my nephew and I went on Cat in the Hat just to see a proper dark ride after feeling ill from Hogwarts.
      Twister's theming and queue were so strong, and even Bill Paxton's droll speeches gave a sense of anticipation for the effects event.
      That, and I am not a Jimmy Fallon fan, so when a beloved ride is replaced by one that you cannot stand, well....

  • @timrempel

    Well done British Bill Paxton. Thanks to you, with the help of Pretend Enthused Helen Hunt, I now miss having Twister around even more Lol. You definitely don't know what you got until its gone, and I'd much rather have Twister than Jimmy Fallon. Great Expedition, I miss all the old attractions. I'm just glad I got to experience Twister and Jaws both before they closed permanently. Hopefully the acting career keeps going, I'm looking forward to more Lol

    Love this idea of seeing the original concept of rides and production history. It's so interesting to what we could have got and why it didn't work(mostly it's budget or rights issue or time). I would love to see either MIB ride history since it had MANY concepts before it was made to what we got

    I'm among the few that got to experience both Backdraft at Universal Studios Hollywood back in 2004 and Twister at Universal Studios Florida back in 2015 (a few months before it closed). Both were fun and I wish there were more attractions like them. I enjoyed Twister more than I did Backdraft probably because I had already seen the movie multiple times and was excited to get the chance to see iconic locations and how they were able to pull the movie off (I didn't see Backdraft until long after my first visit to Universal Studios Hollywood in 2004, so I went into that attraction knowing pretty much nothing about the movie).
    I cannot wait for Twisters to come out later this week.

    Excellent video! Watching this reminded me of the first and only time I ever went on this attraction back in 2012.
    Around this time, I was really getting into theme parks and hadn't been to Universal Studios in years. During the part of the queue where you're about to watch the video parts with Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt, the ride attendant was really hamming things up. He shined a flashlight on his face and was speaking in a goofy scary voice and making fun of the attraction. He then told us that when Bill Paxton appeared on the screen and put his hand on his hip, a rock was going to hurl towards us and we had to dodge it by copying Bill and put our hands on our hips and lean to the left and right. He even had us practice this 'dodging technique'.
    Needless to say, when the video started nothing happened but the attendant kept the charade up and even yelled "The rock is coming!" when Bill did the hand/hip pose. It kinda sucked that some employees were tired of the ride and were willing to mess with park guests out of boredom. It made my first experience kinda crappy lol.

    I loved the queue for this ride so much, maybe moreso than the ride, haha. I still remember walking under the wrecked floor of the house with a jewelery box precariously balanced on a board with a necklace dangling from it. The attention to detail in the original rides was really of another calibur compared to today.
