Can also add an envelope follower to the synth mix control, set operation to Src1 - Src2, then it subtracts the signal from the envelope follower to basically reset the effect if you play a new note. This does require messing with the scales of the sources a bit, and probably is different from rig to rig. Seems like an expression pedal opens a lot of options for fine control here.
This is very cool Leon. It appears there are enough blocks in the VP4 to pull this trick off. If the VP4 works out as I hope it will, I will be able to reduce my pedal count and my instrument count greatly, which is something I have been wanting to do for a long time. I have three infinite sustain guitars, but I like this approach much better than wasting three instruments to get this sound and also having three instruments without a usable neck pickup. Cheers!
Thanks Todd, as you mentioned, you do need to adjust playing style a bit and release of the effect (I routed to a Pedal controller) because with the Synth engaged if you don't play anything the synth starts playing random notes. Very useful effect, again as you mention, working to recreate digitally what comes natural with an amp setup. Much appreciated.
This is so cool. I just purchased the Freqout pedal a month ago and was really not that impressed. This sounds and reacts much better. Thanks for showing this Leon!
Just wondering about this exact topic and all of a sudden there you are with it!!!! Thanks Leon you Rip brother!!!! I listen to all your teachings while driving, I call it Drive Time University with the Master Professor Leon Todd!!!! Again thanks for all your dedication and teachings! Your working the 6string is very inspirational as well!!!!
Very interesting to see the configuration used to achieve this. I use a Digitech Freqout to do this, and having it available natively in the Fractals means one less pedal on the floor. Thanks again for the tutorial and the demos, Leon!
#cheatcodeenabled lolll! :D Seriously, that's a beast of a trick! Thanks for sharing, I'll certainly give the man some kudo's on the forum. The Fractal Community is so awesome.
I looove controlled feedback. Ever since I 1st heard Brad Gillis in Night Ranger use it in his solos in a musical way...I was hooked. When my parents got tired of my guitar cranked up all the time, I made a homemade sustainiac (based on the original concept)....a headphone amp driving a single, large diaphram headphone, strapped onto the guitar...either headstock or body. That was enough to keep me going for a long time. I don't have a Fractal (maybe one day), but I DO have the Freqout pedal...which I love and tend to overdo. :) Feedback is a very addictive thing. Almost like a wah, it can become a crutch. lol
So much work and yet it doesn't require a lot of in-the-room volume to get real feedback with an Axe-FX setup if you're using a real guitar cabinet. (No cabinet IR) I'm a feedback junkie and never had to play that loud to get great feedback, particularly in a high gain setting like this one.
I got this working on my Axe FX ll but one issue is on the higher notes the synth goes wacky when I apply any vibrato or even if I try holding it steady. I don't have all of the setting you have there but I do have most of them. Also sometimes with the expression pedal to zero I still hear synth noise in background.
Thank you for all of the 5 Minute Tone series that you have provided to us. This one is really great as was the circular delay. You generosity and kindness are unmatched (or maybe Matchless?) Thanks again for all you do and your excellent playing is music to our ears (pun intended)! Rock on!
Aloha Leon, Love your informative and well put together videos. Is this patch going to be available on Axe Exchange? Keep up the great posts and killer tones. Mahalo
this is a nice trick but in lower gain situations the tracking falls apart and there are synth artifacts feeding into the signal. i have tried with the send-return blocks but didnt have much luck cause the signal gets out of control fast and there's only noise very quickly. have you tried with the S/R blocks with any success yourself?
Man, I always frickin' love your tone work and sound. So inspiring! I am 0.0001% away from pulling the trigger on getting an Axe FX III at this point. Any thoughts on using it with a BOSS Katana MKII-100 amp or should I just go through my Scarlett 2i2 interface with dedicated monitor speakers? (Home man-cave guitar player here - no band, just me having fun.)
Pull the trigger. You won’t be sorry. I’ve use this for a year and a half and I’m sorry that I didn’t get it sooner. There’s so much that you can do with this I’m still finding and creating exciting sounds. Plus we have guys like Leon to show us new things too.
Another glimpse into the Fractal greatness...Got a question: when using the Axe FX3 in 4CM, how do you go about equalizing the volumes between the Axe FX/amp head, and Axe FX as modeller?
Thank you and Simeon so much for this, it’s not clear to me what “switch” are you using to activate the feedback effect, is it an external footswitch attached to the Fractal or an expression pedal.
Great Simeon and Todd question im wondering if you can toggle between 7 and 19 using controller heel back 7 toe forward 19.. If not im selling it... just kidding.......
Thanks for demoing this, Leon! I briefly read through the forum thread and watched the demo video when Simeon posted it and thought, "that's really neat, but I've already got a Freqout." Now I'm thinking I may just need to put my Freqout up for sale! I'm definitely giving this a shot this weekend. Have you tried changing the shift to be below the trigger note to emulate the "low" feedback thing the Freqout does?
@@LeonTodd It's a neat mode. If you're going for natural sounding feedback, you'll be left wanting, but it does a sub-octave thing that has its own flavor.
Cheers LT👊🏼Thanks for sharing these great videos. If one “I” was to purchase an FM3, would I have to join up on your Patron to get my hands on a few of these sweet and killer patches or tones? I’m pretty sure I can speak for many of us and say, these Fractal systems can be a little confusing if you catch my drift, that’s one on the reasons I’ve not made the purchase.
@@LeonTodd So I've been playing around with this several times. It works but as I mentioned in a post above it starts off sounding perfect then one little deviation on the bend or vibrato and the synth goes off make wacky synth sounds. Back to the drawing board!
Dear leon! I seem to have done everything as in the video, but it doesn't work perfectly, there are overtones of the synth. Could you post a block of this synth with all the settings so I can just use it? I and thousands of guitarists would appreciate it!
@@LeonTodd The frequency parameter goes crazy unless I hold the note absolutely static. I'll have to experiment a bit more but was wondering if anyone else had a similar problem.

WE embraced LOUD, because of that delicious feedback, and natural compression from over stressing speakers:) What a cool trick though:)
Thanks Leon! I’ll have to check this out and compare it to the other method of using a pitch block

no, it actually works more like the digitech freqout by gradually replacing your guitar note with a synthetically generated one.
