14 years, countless theories later and Dan Patrick has just blown my mind in 2021. "We died....they lived....That's how I took it" I've never heard that as a concept for the ending.
My take on the ending is similar to Steve's. I always thought it ended where Tony finally solved his mob family issues with NY and his personal family issues with the wife and kids and life goes on.
He was likely going to prison if he didn't get whacked anyway. Carlo flipped on him in the final episode. I don't think there was going to be a happy ending for him regardless.
I always thought that the show cut out there to imply something happened to the viewer (not that the viewer died at that moment like the interviewer suggests, but that we stopped following along) because there wasn't much more story wise after that. The Big Nothing that Livia talks about. You think we're special? You think just because we went away life doesn't continue on? Well it does. Also, the show is called "The Sopranos" not "Tony Soprano" so to me it doesn't make sense that the show cuts to black is implying that Tony got whacked or something. The show could have kept going by it's own rules, but it didn't. If you want my honest opinion I think Chase knew this ending would not only ruffle some tail feathers but also serve to keep interest in the show and discuss it as we are now. I think it was purposefully left vague and controversial.

David Chase has finally explained the ending. He says Tony was killed in the restaurant. He just didn’t want us to see it. It would have been too painful.
Phenomenal ending. Tony got whacked by Members Only guy. It was yet another shout out to The Godfather, Members Only guy came outta bathroom and popped Tony, he never heard it coming and it all went to black - just like Bobby said would happen in the boat. Its not that hard to figure out. There were shoutouts to Godfather thru the whole series. Perfect ending. Tony died.
that is one possibility, for me it was just an open ending with a variety of possibilities. it felt like at the moment everything is peaceful and good, but the axe is hanging above his head, like that lifestyle is. could be killed or arrested or nothing has happened and it goes on. it is up to you how you wanna continue it.

I thought that after bobby and sil got hit tony saw the writing on the wall and flipped. He was gathering his family to go into hiding. I also think that that was how chase always envisioned it what with all the foreshadowing and given tonys sir names?....... as to sing Also think there would have been a series with tony in the witness protection program giving evidence and trying to scratch a living... think sammy the bull. But after ganolfinis death? .... chase made his choice and said that tony got wacked
The ending is open to personal interpretation simply because what happens was never shown. The overwhelming majority of viewers think Tony was clipped by the Members Only guy. If one day David Chase gets so fed up that he says "No, no, no - Tony lived and here are the clues why" and lays it all out (assuming that's what he intended) it's still only an interpretation. Chase's interpretation carries no more weight than anyone else's because it was not shown. Doesn't matter that he was the writer. It was never shown. No proof. My interpretation? Bell rings. We see Tony look up. We see what Tony sees. Over and again until Meadow walks in. Bell rings, Tony looks up and Bam! Cut to black - what Tony sees. He never saw it coming. I sure hope that bitch has learned how to parallel park.
I know Dan Patrick is a big deal in the media...but, as a dude who used to be in the 'biz' on the radio, and such, man, Dan is a 'puker'...Sorry, no offense.
A lot of people hate being asked about old projects, but I really appreciate that he's always open to answering questions about Sopranos.
Steve seems genuine and down to earth.
He would be a great guy to grab a coffee with. I'll check a show out just because he's in it.
