I’m 41 years old, and learning the same lessons as the kid. I had never thought about gassing the landings to make it smoother, and nobody ever told me because I taught myself how to ride. These videos are filled with little nuggets that are so helpful that many riders who have had instruction from a dad or a coach may take for granted, but are gold to those who don’t know.

I broke my back on a 450 in 2010 at 21 years old. I quit riding until last year at age 33. I bought a new yz250f (broke myself on a crf450) and I love the bike but I'm still not "over" my fear of injury. Your videos are so good. Watching you teach is such a great thing. Thank you for your content. It's helping me mentally get back in the game.

Assuming you got the Videomic Pro, it should sound great! In the wind I'd recommend turning on the high pass filter, it should pick up less of that rumbling wind noise. That and a cover for the mic like a deadcat (sounds weird, I know) should improve it a lot. Great stuff AJ. Love your videos.

I think some of it comes from the natural learning progression of jumping. When starting out on small 1 and 2 foot jumps that don’t have much/any build up, especially if you’re going into it slow, you often have to blip it just to level out. I think maybe people take that and continue to do it with larger jumps. If you have a build up or properly built jump, I’m sure this is totally different. I only say that as that’s what I do. I’ve only been riding 3 months (never been on a bike prior), and I’m mostly doing trail and some hill climbing, but I have a few bits on my property that are natural features I use as jumps. I’ve never tried anything larger than what I have here, and the suspension I currently have won’t handle larger jumps with my weight anyway, but that would be my natural response if I were to try anything bigger. For now, I’m mostly working on wheelies (with great progress) to help get over obstacles. I don’t have much interest (yet) in MX, but there’s much to learn from those who do, so thank you so much for sharing your thoughts, experience, and time! I have so much to learn, but it’s incredibly satisfying to take what I have learned here and see it improve my riding.
I need to do this. I’ve been riding for 20 years and I raced for a few but not since 2007 I screwed up my back and stopped riding for a long time. I started again on 4 strokes and I can jump those fine but now I’m back on a 2 stroke and remember how much I used to have to brake tap when I was growing up on them 😆 I could definitely use some pointers with jumping 2 strokes because that’s the only thing that really intimidates me at the track with the new bike. Going fast and cornering and rollers etc doesn’t bother me but rolling up a jump face with a 2 stroke is just super nerve racking for me trying to make sure my body position, throttle control and gear are all perfect.
Microphone: I don't know your exact setup and I didn't see the mic, BUT,,, those mics are usually "condenser" mics I believe, but at any rate, they are usually very sensitive and are designed to pick up ALL of the frequencies from far away (Bass, Mid-range, Treble, and everything between).. as opposed to a rock-'n'-roll vocal mic, for example, that has high rejection starting at a few inches away... and by design, any wind that gets to the inside of the mic sounds bad. SOOO, the solution is usually a wind screen. Basically a piece of foam that lets sound through but blocks most of the wind. If you have already tried a wind screen with no good results, you probably either need a thicker wind screen or a different mic, more suited to windy places. If this doesn't help, I have a friend that will definitely know, so lemme know and I'll comment again. I do live sound (bands) but have several friends that own audio-visual companies,, more in line with video. BTW, thanks for all of the GREAT riding tips and advice!!!
Show some jumping situations where you’re coasting off a jump..those tables back to back..speed up to him and to not over jump you have to coast...without scrubbing
I blip when the jump face is short and is a kicker and your coming at it at a high speed and don’t want to endo, so you slow down right before, but need to blip the throttle to keep the front end from dropping

Amazing Videos AJ The Quality with this camera is much better, but you have to work a bit with the configuration. I think now it’s ready to make SlowMotion (high FPS) the footage SL looks very nice, but the normal speed video looks strange because of that. Know you have a 450 in your hand no a 65 jajajajaja
I think i would have been concentrating more on him clearing the jump ,but i totally think your approach is better small steps and you can see his confidence growing.. So long term this is going to be better than if i had rushed into the jump your elliminating problems befor they occur or at least setting the kid up so he is ready for everything ..Pragmatic approach nice one i have a small boy and i have to constantly evaluate what i tell him you are a great source of info ,thanks ...

I blip too, it's natural. I think it's because when I get to the lip I realize I'm not going fast enough. And I feel if I hit a jump coasting, I'll endo and panic rev hoping not to die lol

Funny enough when i rode 85cc non of my teachers said this.. i blipped aswell due to me being stuck in second gear. Thus i was a beginner but these advices would have been a huge difference, my first teacher told me to literally have some throttle in the air so the engine wont die..... .. oh well great to see upcoming kids get such god help from someone like A.J.
Awesome work you're doing!!! You're making a difference! The engine sounds like the kid is sometimes not letting off the throttle after he leaves the jump? It may sound like he's blipping the throttle but it could be not letting off the throttle
I feel ya on premiere pro. Jumping into that and auditions is another world. In my professional life i make tutorials and when i edit my own stuff i use camtasia. My editor uses premiere. I can do a bit with it but there is so much. Unless you need to go crazy with audio tweaks or video effects something more user friendly goes a long way. In the mic since you face aeay from the camera and often have a helmet i would look at adding a lav mic on a second channel. Not sure how you are set up but getting audio on the camera and on a lav can be good. Whenever i film on site we always record to dual cards and capture audio on 2 tracks. Also good if you are dealing with constant background noise like a fan or something to leave dead air for 3s. Adobe auditions will let you isolate and pull out certain things.
I think the main reason for blip is people approach the jump unconfident and slow. Then as they’re going off the face they think to gas it to get some extra lift. Really you want to find your speed out of the corner or on the flat well before the face of the jump and then keep the throttle smooth

I've had to hit a few creek jumps in races but it still scares the heck out of me. 5th gear pinned on a whooped out, nasty strait is no problem but a 20-30 foot jump turns me into Chicken Little.
Yeah, bad and dangerous throttle habit, especially on the bigger bikes. Was on a siting lap at an unfamiliar track on my Service Honda 500....approached what looked like an easy double, so I grabbed some throttle since I was going slow, and I caught that magical meat of that 500 engine. Launched it straight up, broke my tailbone, and destroyed my subframe and exhaust.
I think it's cool you did a little edit of him at the end. Probably really cool for him to see. I know I'd like it if someone was teaching me of that caliber.
Get a “dead cat” for the mic when using it outdoors. Also bring it in a little closer a shotgun mounted to the camera is better for closer shots. Love the videos and the no nonsense teaching. I always learned the best that way as a kid. Just gotta tell it to them straight!
I've never really learned to land on the throttle, I've only hit one "real" jump and you gotta get on the brakes immediately to make to corner afterwards. I dont get to ride track very often and I've only ridden a couple poorly maintained tracks and only one had a decent jump but as I mentioned it was into a corner, most of the time I catch air it is off of a small bump out in the desert, if im play riding I hit it and let off the gas and turn around immediately to go hit it again, and if im racing I hit it and hold the throttle because most of the time I dont catch more than a foot of air and if I throttle hard the back wheel immediately hits the ground and I take off because all the weight is on the rear wheel. Occasionally when I treat whoops as rithym sections when possible (not often is it possible in the desert) i will let off the gas so I dot loop out, but most whoops that I catch air on I'll hold the throttle on because they are more mellow spread out whoops. I would be really good at hitting actual jumps though because I have been mountain biking and hitting 30-40 foot jumps, but I've never gotten the chance to hit a good well maintained jump on my dirtbike.
I can recall quite a few times I’ve had some epic saves by pinning the throttle. It’s definitely not your first instinct. But after riding long enough and knowing how your bike is going to react. It just becomes natural or muscle memory to give it gas instead of letting off.
Tips: when you need to record audio not near the camera invest 40$ in a rode lavaliere go microphone. You can use with your phone and audio will be awesome. Need to be synced in video editing tool but this will increase a lot the quality of external recording
For beginner novice Riders extremely beginner just to keep you from diving in the dirt and Speedy up a little bit good advice depending on circumstances

I’m hoping to be shooting one of the races, gotta call my Cowboys PR director... he knows me from my NFL Films days... I may come shoot you at Kaufman MX if I can fit it in... depends on if NCAA shuts sports down... I told the owners of Swan MX to contact you... but it’s 2.5 hours from Arlington so the logistics probably weren’t as realistic… You still would’ve sold out in East Texas though, I promise you that… LOL hope to meet you at AT&T Stadium, or at Kaufman MX after the first of the year…
i think blipping is to kind of reassure your brain that the bike is where it is supposed to be. even though there is no reason to think it wouldnt be where it is supposed to be lol.
Work on hand and core strength with him, he's hanging on with his hands instead of just steering. Core strength dependence and leaning forward will help him tons.
Do you have a dead cat on your Rode mic? Also if you're fluent with iMovie I feel like you shouldn't overlook Final Cut Pro - I doubt you'd even need a tutorial to get started. I've been using a GH5 for a few years it's an amazing camera.

Yep, this would be the one exception. But if you’re a good rider, i wouldn’t describe it as a blip, more of a quick ramp up of acceleration

Get a “dead cat” for the mic when using it outdoors. Also bring it in a little closer a shotgun mounted to the camera is better for closer shots. Love the videos and the no nonsense teaching. I always learned the best that way as a kid. Just gotta tell it to them straight!

I've never really learned to land on the throttle, I've only hit one "real" jump and you gotta get on the brakes immediately to make to corner afterwards. I dont get to ride track very often and I've only ridden a couple poorly maintained tracks and only one had a decent jump but as I mentioned it was into a corner, most of the time I catch air it is off of a small bump out in the desert, if im play riding I hit it and let off the gas and turn around immediately to go hit it again, and if im racing I hit it and hold the throttle because most of the time I dont catch more than a foot of air and if I throttle hard the back wheel immediately hits the ground and I take off because all the weight is on the rear wheel. Occasionally when I treat whoops as rithym sections when possible (not often is it possible in the desert) i will let off the gas so I dot loop out, but most whoops that I catch air on I'll hold the throttle on because they are more mellow spread out whoops. I would be really good at hitting actual jumps though because I have been mountain biking and hitting 30-40 foot jumps, but I've never gotten the chance to hit a good well maintained jump on my dirtbike.
I can recall quite a few times I’ve had some epic saves by pinning the throttle.
It’s definitely not your first instinct. But after riding long enough and knowing how your bike is going to react. It just becomes natural or muscle memory to give it gas instead of letting off.
Tips: when you need to record audio not near the camera invest 40$ in a rode lavaliere go microphone. You can use with your phone and audio will be awesome. Need to be synced in video editing tool but this will increase a lot the quality of external recording
For beginner novice Riders extremely beginner just to keep you from diving in the dirt and Speedy up a little bit good advice depending on circumstances

Heard you’re going to Kaufman MX during the SX series in Arlington... I’m hoping to be shooting one of the races, gotta call my Cowboys PR director... he knows me from my NFL Films days... I may come shoot you at Kaufman MX if I can fit it in... depends on if NCAA shuts sports down... I told the owners of Swan MX to contact you... but it’s 2.5 hours from Arlington so the logistics probably weren’t as realistic… You still would’ve sold out in East Texas though, I promise you that… LOL hope to meet you at AT&T Stadium, or at Kaufman MX after the first of the year…

i think blipping is to kind of reassure your brain that the bike is where it is supposed to be. even though there is no reason to think it wouldnt be where it is supposed to be lol.
My take, blip is timing and gets your nose down pointed at your landing.
Work on hand and core strength with him, he's hanging on with his hands instead of just steering. Core strength dependence and leaning forward will help him tons.

Do you have a dead cat on your Rode mic? Also if you're fluent with iMovie I feel like you shouldn't overlook Final Cut Pro - I doubt you'd even need a tutorial to get started. I've been using a GH5 for a few years it's an amazing camera.
