@@trentlandis7601 I can understand the if you do not want to eat something based on your individual idea of morality pertaining to food source, but the cholesterol comment was factually incorrect. Cholesterol in itself is not bad for you. Breast milk and prior to breast milk a woman produces colostrum, which is made up of nothing but fat and cholesterol. Colostrum is extremely healthy and vital to a baby’s health. Healthy fats and cholesterol from pure sources are not the issue. Type two diabetics and those on the verge on becoming diabetic have change the course of their health by eating health fats and consuming good cholesterol while getting rid of processed carbs and unneeded sugar along with daily exercise.
As a triathlete I've also had a food intolerance test done a couple of years ago and also cut a lot of foods that were part of my day to day diet. I've since discovered that if you are eating a lot of the same foods you will develop an intolerance to that food. Just by reducing/cutting back the intake of these foods will rectify the intolerance problem. What I'm trying to say is just because you're intolerant to certain foods doesn't mean you'll always be intolerant.
FYI food intolerance testing is not accurate and typically are based on measuring IgG antibodies which should be present by anybody after eating whatever food they are flagging. Sadly, there is no "test" for intolerances [if only it could be so simple!]--the only way to identify an intolerance is through trial & error or elimination/reintroduction.
Plant based diet is the only way to go. I went full plant based two years ago and I feel the best I have felt in 25 years. I’m 42 and in the best shape and health of my life. Wish I made this diet change when I was a NCAA tennis player. Going plant based is like unlocking a cheat code for life.
Not me, I tried it and had severe anxiety and my iron went to the dogs, despite doing all of the right things. It’s nice if you can do it, wish I could

I relate so much to what you’ve gone through with stomach problems, tiredness and bloating… And trying to figure out was wrong cutting out all different things and watching people eat something as simple as carrots or eggs and being so sad I couldn’t have them. But then I finally found out that actually I had celiac deseise. Which made such a difference with my training and competitions as well, in rock climbing. You’re such an inspiration🫶 And I admire you so much
I’ve been gluten free for 10 years now and one of my current favorite ways to use GF oats is to make overnight oats with a bit of protein powder, oats and Chobani or Oatley oat milk. It’s great to make in advance and have all week! Glad to hear you found some answers for your GI issues!
Loved this video! I think Lucy is just going to start literally flying one of these days, such a superhero. Also, did you make those banana, cacao, coconut, etc. energy bars yourselves? They look very yummy. Is the recipe available to the public somewhere?
Great, Lucy is going to be even stronger, wow! Beast mode and loved the video, you rock Lucy. Thanks for bringing your intolerances forward, just from watching this video I know its definitely time to start dropping gluten (Italian pains) for me. Was always worried with wanting to carb load, but a little proper research shows there are so many other ways. Reece twirling the pasta with two butter knives, lmao.
A pro cyclist once famously started trying to eat low gluten when he made it to the world tour, because he thought he needed to get more serious. He got there and everyone was stuffing their face with as much pasta and toast as they could find.
It's gonna be a change but you'll feel so much better for it! So interesting - human guts are fascinating! Glad to see another video from you! Happy training!
After a few years of GI issues, i thought it was Gluten and went Gluten free. Helped eliminate a small problem but, it uncovered the dairy issues. Now that dairy and gluten are out of my diet, probiotics are helping me get back to some sense of normalcy. The best part is now i can eat confidently before a big race.
As a Vegan, and Triathlete, I found this very interesting indeed; and not from the aspect people would think. I feel it's super important if people are not feeling great to go get themselves tested. Food intolerance can cause so many issues if not diagnosed and understood. Seems Lucy can be a Flexatarian and eat some meats if she wishes but has to be careful on other things. Mixing plant based foods is a fantastic way to balance overall health; though yes I myself would prefer people to adopt a full plant based/Vegan diet. Well done TC-B 💚👍 Dominos do a gluten free Pizza, as-well as Vegan, so you could ask for the a mix of both to get your fix 😁
OK, I've loved following you as an athlete already but now I'm even more invested. I am gluten-free, dairy-free, egg-free (and meat-free) as well and doing what I can to build a healthy amount of muscle and endurance. It can be very challenging to eat enough on that kind of diet. Also I heard Beirut in the background and love that band!
please do that video showing both of your race nutrition plans, i've struggled to find one that works. especially in how much water/electrolytes to take in. would be cool to see what you do
Oh, as a gluten and lactose malabsorbant, I need to comment on this one. Lucy, you might be in luck: you likely can eat dairy provided it doesn't contain lactose. That means you can probably eat eggs. Also, choose lacto-free milk, butter, etc (look out for Arla produce). Not all dairy contains lactose, which is what you're likely to be intolerant to. It's worth experimenting because eggs are too good. For gluten-free breads, the only 2 brands that aren't powdery and act like "normal" bread are Warburtons and Schar. Pizza tip: White Rabbit. 100% gf and vegan. They use substitute cheese with MozzaRisella. It tastes good also.
Hi Lucy, have you thought about consulting a sports dietitian? Food intolerance tests are not very accurate... and may lead you to cut of foods unnecessarily. Sports dietitians are trained specifically to deal with GI issues like yours and use evidence based research in their approach.
Thank you for sharing. Homemade pizza (with a gluten free crust recipe and dairy free pesto recipe) is phenomenal. Also, make sure you regularly get blood tested. Whole foods plant based can sometimes cause deficiencies in certain vitamins. I noticed I am usually low on calcium and iron so I supplement those.
I also had a food intolerance test recently and found out eggs were on my list too. It makes me sad, but I'm surviving. A cauliflower pizza crust is pretty good, I can get away with sourdough pizza crust as well. I make my own bars for races and that works so well. Carrying your own nutrition is tough, would be awesome to see how you do it and also what you eat on race week?
@@darrenjames6225 hey just so you know these tests aren't always accurate so it's really worth researching the validity and accuracy of your tests before cutting out good food you enjoy, mine said I was sensitive to over 100+ things the only thing I actually through further testing had a significant reaction to was soy

Cheers from Los Angeles, the land of wraps everything from Mexican to Indian food… if you hear the wraps up slightly beforehand, they’ll bend nicely. Put a small drop of oil on the “inside” of the wrap, it’ll also stick nicely. That’s what all the restaurants out here do. It’s why they serve you a stack of tortillas in the little clay container with the top on - to keep the steam in & keep ‘em warm. Hope that helps!!
Good question, and what post-run and how soon after running. I eat 2 to 2.5 hours before a long run, homemade oat bars with dates, nut butter. Works great. Post run I sometimes end up going for a bar or shake because the carb/protein mix is good for recovery and i’m too tired to make a proper meal lol, but doesn’t sit that well, would love to hear what pro’s do
Butter has such a small amount of lactose in it that people who are lactose intolerant often find they can tolerate it. I always wondered why i couldn't tolerate milk and most cheeses but was fine with butter. I did some research and that clarified things. Added to above is the fact that you'd need to be eating tonnes of butter in one go to feel any side effects because of a lactose intolerance.

I think as an elite athlete she is removing everything that COULD be causing upset as a quick fix/to improve performance, but for most people I wouldn't recommend them because a large amount of the foods highlighted in those tests your only slight sensitive too= and would be better cutting things out one at a time to see how it improves performance
@@kjml129 For some people certain food intolerance could be so clear they don't need any test at all. I am intolerant to milk (even lactose free milk is not too ok). When I have it, I get nausea, severe stomach pain attacks and passing soft stool or diarrhea. I only cut out milk from usual diet and the bad effects stop. Occasionally I think it could be just a coincidence or it's just my imagination, so I try milk and I get sick again. Maybe the whole thing is still psychological (which can cause physiological problems) and I am really not intolerant to milk, and I should do a blind test or something. Then I would have to see some kind of specialist psychologist to cure me of this reverse-placebo (something making me sick for no medical reason) effect to milk. It's easier to just cut out milk.
Great video :D I love seeing what you athlete eats and maybe getting some ideas. I myself is vegetarian and lactose intolerant and allergig to fruit, all kind of fruit and there is fruit in a LOT of food...
Lucy: *can’t open as can with her nails* Also Lucy: *races a triathlon & rips a wetsuit off in 0.02 seconds with her nails* Alsoooo those Ironman medalsssss 😱 medal haul?? 😂
My go to vegan-gluten free-homemade pizza: gluten free pita wrap, tomato sauce, vegan mozarella, some veggies, and chili sparkles. In the oven for 10 minutes, or until cheese is melted. Promise it’s amazing, filling and a healthy “cheat meal”.
Do you flatten the carbonation of the red bull? I don’t think that’s helping with the bloating and GI issues you may have. Cracking video btw!!!! Thanks
Hey, Lucy! loved the video and learned a lot as I'll be doing my first ironman this year! if you're open to a small critique, I would be cautious with tofu as it's high in soy. That's all, thank you :)
Lucy I'm so happy for you guys and the new nutrition plans because that video from club La Santa when you guys go to the kitchen to prepare and after workout meal and you pulling that Whey protein big bucket I got afraid about you guys heath I got the same problem I'm lactose intolerant my body got blooded... i recommended to try the Vega Plant Base protein shake save my life I cut pizza ice cream for the non dairy ones and lactose free Lucy long history short Now if you stick To this nutritional habits We winning Kona for sure much love for you guys from Palm Beach Florida A1A.
Food intolerance is not the end but once you learn and try new things over time it will be more easy and you learn there is so much other options don't worry Tip 1: If you are only intolerance to wheat gluten try make a spelt pizza, it is not the same but very good and filling Tip 2: combine almond and rice "milk" and make a cappuccino from it, it is the best
Lucy, congrats for the 70.3 title! Any correlation with your food change? I am hobby triathlete and have little time for training due to job and family but the plant based nutrition gave me faster recovery than omnivore diet. Cheers!
This is a bit late, but here are my recommendations! (I live in Germany, so unfortunately I'm not sure where else they are available) - Alpro has two oat milks made to taste like milk. There's a 3.8% and 1.8% version, and I find them really great in tea since they taste like milk (and in my opinion they taste like what milk wishes it could be!). - Veganz is my favourite brand for any cheat-y foods. Specifically, their vegan coconut chocolate bar (decadent), lemon cookies (amazing), and any of their pizza (not bad for vegan cheese!) - If you happen to be in Germany I would make a bee-line for the snacks at DM. Anything from DM :D
Maybe you should really consider to talk to some Dr. on a whole food plant based diet. I am doing this diet since 1,5 years and feel great. Performance is great (for an amateur obviously). I do get more than enough protein in. Just a suggestion. Keep on rocking, love your videos. Lola is so cute :-) Cheers
@@jamiefuhrman403 Well, as most of the science is done on men most of the recommendations you would normalöy get are referring to mens bodies. That is why Dr. Sims is doing research with women - to complement the knowledge we already have and incorporate women.
Arla lactose free milk is a game changer! Tastes just like skimmed milk, without the lactose. Tesco and most other supermarkets also have their own lactose free milk options too - much better for teas and coffee than oat/almond/soy milk
Do you spend a lot of time cooking? How do you manage having enough energy to train, and cook? For me, cooking is harder than training 😅 Would love some cooking tips! Great video.
Vegan / plant based diet Lucy. It's the only way! Honestly, I'm not sure why more pros don't chose this life style. You definitely will notice it in your recovery also. Animals will thank you also :)
when you say you are intolerant to certain foods, it could be intolerance to how that food was processed, as most foods are heavily processed in US. but if you could find organic naturally made foods, your intolerance may go away. also gut biome is something to consider. this is a new field where they have found that for some reason (could be antibiotics) some people lose some of their bacteria that help breakdown food and as a result they can't break it down anymore, and the body doesn't produce them anymore. they say c-section also causes babies not to receive these healthy bacteria from their mothers and become intolerant as well. I myself have been intolerant to dairy and gluten for years. funny thing is, it gets better at times. milk still makes me sick, but I could have other types of dairy. also pastries and bread used to make me bloat, but for the last few years I have moved to middle east, and their flat bread doesn't make me sick at all. so I have doubts about gluten or even lactos to be the real cause.
15 yr old daughter changed from USA swimming to USA triathlon a month ago and loves it!!! We are a plant based family. Can you share the recipe for the bars you made please? That would be great for her long rides.
Tilt your coffee cup to the side when you build the base, then slowly return it horizontal as you pour your top layer. Don’t try and paint your pattern on, you should be aiming to pour it on. Otherwise you’re almost there!!
Hi, I just wanted to say that comment was not meant to be negative but a real question. Coming for a science background I really believe that DNA and Blood tests will be the way forward but not there yet. So perhaps a a more systematic approach such as the removal of food types from diet maybe a better approach. HOWEVER IF YOU FEEL BETTER and PERFORM BETTER who CARES :).
In the UK Pizza Express is a good spot to get Gluten Free pizza with vegan cheese. They also have vegan gluten free desserts carrot cake was amazing! Something else you can try if you still want beef is wild game meats like boar, venison, or moose. I found duck eggs to impact less than chicken eggs if you still want eggs.
Daiya thin crust gluten free pizza is our go-to option for frozen gf, dairy free vegan pizza! Or we make a gf crust w/Bobs red mill gf flour & add Daiya cheese (Daiya has no gluten/ dairy/soy). So maybe a good fit. ✨
You are my hero! Love the videos, have you checked out Bendan Brazier's Thrive cookbook? Lots of good "vegan" information. Congrats on St. George 70.3! You rock! Whole Food Plant Based eating is awesome and you can eat as much as you want.
If your still having problems with the wraps try warming them in between some paper towels in the microwave or on the stove in a low heated pan! Should make them more pliable
Cauliflower pizza crusts are nice but super thin most of the time. I found a gluten-free, sour dough pizza place in Boulder that was amazing. It does exist.
Thanks for the video! I got a laugh out of you saying you’re taking it easy because of the COVID vaccine and then describing your three workouts for that day :) you’re amazing! I would absolutely love to see a video of your nutrition plan for race day. For gluten free pizzas I really enjoy a good cauliflower pizza crust.
Lucy: *can’t open as can with her nails*
Also Lucy: *races a triathlon & rips a wetsuit off in 0.02 seconds with her nails*
Alsoooo those Ironman medalsssss 😱 medal haul??
Thanks
Aspartame
which is Rat poison for Humans is one Ingredient in it no Good!
Very interesting! I would very much like to see more videos like this one, and maybe a copy of that banana/cocoa/date bar recipe!?!
Me too!
Hey, Lucy! loved the video and learned a lot as I'll be doing my first ironman this year! if you're open to a small critique, I would be cautious with tofu as it's high in soy.
Food intolerance is not the end but once you learn and try new things over time it will be more easy and you learn there is so much other options don't worry
Tip 1: If you are only intolerance to wheat gluten try make a spelt pizza, it is not the same but very good and filling
Tip 2: combine almond and rice "milk" and make a cappuccino from it, it is the best
11:50 A tooth paste : the perfect object to stabilize your bike 😂
Lucy, congrats for the 70.3 title! Any correlation with your food change? I am hobby triathlete and have little time for training due to job and family but the plant based nutrition gave me faster recovery than omnivore diet. Cheers!
Rubbish
so excited 🔥
This is a bit late, but here are my recommendations! (I live in Germany, so unfortunately I'm not sure where else they are available)
- Alpro has two oat milks made to taste like milk. There's a 3.8% and 1.8% version, and I find them really great in tea since they taste like milk (and in my opinion they taste like what milk wishes it could be!).
- Veganz is my favourite brand for any cheat-y foods. Specifically, their vegan coconut chocolate bar (decadent), lemon cookies (amazing), and any of their pizza (not bad for vegan cheese!)
- If you happen to be in Germany I would make a bee-line for the snacks at DM. Anything from DM :D
Super! I definitely want to know more! S2
Buckwheat flakes are amazing too. You can get huge bags on Amazon and stuff.
Hi Lucy 👋🏻
Pizza base recommendation- glutamel, you can buy from Ocado. Hope this helps x
Great video Lucy and Reece, thank you. Would you be able to share who you used for your blood test/food intolerances?
Great video guys! Would love more videos on nutrition. With your varying calorie in-take, do you maintain a specific macro nutrient split?
Great video as always! Greetings from Germany!
Very insightful video, thank you!
You should definetly read „Roar“ by Dr. Stacy Sims to prevent your GI issues and work with your menstrual cyle as well 🤓
Is there an equivalent book for men? I've heard great things about Dr. Sims and her book.
@@jamiefuhrman403 umm… not sure but you can read her book too. Her tips might be interesting for men as well :)
Just wondering if you can give the recipe out for those energy bars?
YES YES YES
Yes please!
when you say you are intolerant to certain foods, it could be intolerance to how that food was processed, as most foods are heavily processed in US. but if you could find organic naturally made foods, your intolerance may go away. also gut biome is something to consider. this is a new field where they have found that for some reason (could be antibiotics) some people lose some of their bacteria that help breakdown food and as a result they can't break it down anymore, and the body doesn't produce them anymore. they say c-section also causes babies not to receive these healthy bacteria from their mothers and become intolerant as well.
@LucyCharlesBarclay Do you guys mind sharing that energy bar recipe? They look so delicous!!! Thank you so much and have a great off season!
Rice milk was the go to before the entrance of vegan alternatives like soya and oat
Interesting video, which test did you use? I was under the impression that these test are not scientifically proven to be correct?
Where do you have the blue shirt and your shorts from?
You are my hero! Love the videos, have you checked out Bendan Brazier's Thrive cookbook? Lots of good "vegan" information. Congrats on St. George 70.3! You rock! Whole Food Plant Based eating is awesome and you can eat as much as you want.
If your still having problems with the wraps try warming them in between some paper towels in the microwave or on the stove in a low heated pan! Should make them more pliable
Cauliflower pizza crusts are nice but super thin most of the time. I found a gluten-free, sour dough pizza place in Boulder that was amazing. It does exist.
Please do a full day of eating on a normal training day. Every meal and snacks, very simple video but interesting haha
Cauliflower crust pizza! So good!
You can buy them at many grocery stores pre-made and they’re delicious.
That box matches your outfit! 24:07
Kinda scary - world champion while eating things to which she's been sensitive. Imagine what 2022 will hold when she's avoiding foods that are producing inflammation! OMG, Go Lucy!
