Harry Callahan was one of the great, influential photographers of the twentieth century.
Born in Detroit, he first worked as a clerk for the Chrysler corporation where he met his wife and most famous subject, Eleanor.
Having several associations with photographic luminaries Ansel Adams and Alfred Stieglitz, Callahan went on to have a very prolific career of personal work that was influential and important as an American photographer.

Good to see an episode on Callahan. He is sadly not as famous as others of his generation. One of the photographers I know here in Atlanta was a student of his from the Rhode Island days. Interesting to hear various stories and stuff about him. Recently I learned whenever he got stuck in his work, he would start shooting 'doubles' (double exposures) to break the routine. He certainly took the idea to another level. Funny to think, he might have been in an creative rut when doing them.

Was not aware of this guy before watching this. Thank you. It's a shame in a way that creatively the techniques he used are now almost redundant as people would do this in post prod. Doing this in camera with film would have been so ground breaking at the time.

Excellent episode. I understand the idea of not getting caught up in the gear but what if you're an avid photographer who wants to move up from the Rebel genre in order to get better overall images. What would you suggest? my interest is street photography and portraits.
