- From the Munich Olympics film "Visions of Eight," a 13-minute masterpiece by Arthur Penn, RIP.
Some background: after the shot of the torch, the remaining competitors are the medalists, Americans Jan Johnson and Bob Seagren and East German Wolfgang Nordwig. The exchange between Seagren and the official after Seagren's last vault relates to an eleventh-hour ruling banning the Americans' then-new carbon-fiber poles. - ภาพยนตร์และแอนิเมชัน
Thank you. I haven't seen this in years, and it has gotten even better with age. An impressionistic masterpiece, and an important part of Penn's body of work - and master editor Dede Allen's as well.
Thank you for mentioning Dede Allen. Her work is just as critical to Penn on this brilliant piece of cinema.
Awesome video, thanks for sharing. I'm reading an old book Cosell by Howard Cosell, he was describing this moment at the Munich Olympics, so it was interesting to see.
To Jay Vavra, you would have loved this. RIP, amigo.
NICE TO WATCH IT
Классика жанра!!!
This is from the movie Visions of 8
ONE OF MY IDOLS IS WOLFGANG NORDWIG
GREAT VIDEO
The official at 11:17 is Adriaan Paulin who had instigated the ban on the latest poles
This is the original. The Mancini soundtrack was for the Michael Pfleghar segment, "The Women."
bob seagren è l'uomo più bello mai esistito, the most handsome man ever existed
NICE
I don't. Other Olympic documentaries (such as Olympia and Tokyo Olympiad) include pole vault footage, but none quite like this.
Ozerovs movie "Oo Sport..." about Moscow 80 included pretty similar segment, just with different music.
bob seagren un grande atleta, oltre ad essere bellissimo, dolcissimo simpaticissimo e anche modesto
Bob Seagren would have won easily with his own poles, he was given a pole that was too light ( not strong enough) for his speed and strength. The same for Jan Johnson. Three years later in an exhibition, he vaulted 5.74 meters, almost 15 cm above the listed World Record. I have no doubt, had he not turned professional to do Superstars, he would have been the first man to pole vault 5.80m ( 19'_
You are so right about the pole issue. I was on the Alabama track team in 1972 with Jan Johnson and I remember him after returning from the Olympics seeming to be pretty down because of the pole controversy issue and everything else that happened at Munich. Even still, Jan Johnson won the Bronze metal in the games. Johnson was incredibly fast and also ran on our 110X4 relay team sometimes as anchor. Awesome athlete an nice guy. Seagren and Johnson were both robbed in Munich by the officials.
Yep
Amazing! Do you have any more old time videos of pole vaulting.
MY IDOL IS WOLFGANG NORDWIG
Is this exactly as it appears in the original film or is this some special cut from DVD special edition or something? The reason I ask is that I saw the original years ago and I seem to remember there was voice over and a soundtrack by Henry Mancini. Not to take away from this version which, with it's minimal sound, is stunning.
I have the DVD. Although I haven't checked it recently, I'm pretty sure this is the original. I was also struck by the creative use of sound.
can you upload the milos forman part, please?
have you got other documentaries with bob seagren?
I WISHD IM FINNISH WOLFGANG NORDWIG
Αυτό είναι τέχνη
he was not correct to avoid seagren to use his pole, he would surely won, and it is a pity that he left track and field after Muenchen, He could become the greatest pole vaulter of the history
the first time the US lost in the pole vault.
I'm sure none of the East Germans was juicing...
is jan johnson the one who chucked the pole
No I think that was Steve Smith
NICE TO WATCH IT
