    As a native English speaker i can tell you your English really is honestly very good. I can understand you easily without any effort. Your choice of words,grammar pronunciation etc are excellent 9 /10. Well no one is perfect so i have to deduct one mark!!!!

      Very occasionally, an odd choice of tense is used, but it actually in the titles for each part of the video that happens more, not when he's speaking, which is interesting, because I would expect it to be the other way around 🤔maybe when writing he slips back into Japanese patterns of tense but when he speaks out loud he can hear if it sounds natural ☺️

    This was a really interesting video! A lot of these were things I had a feeling were true but wasn't sure about. As a Finn, I can relate to points 4 and 5. Saying hi to complete strangers feels weird--like on a hiking path or whatever, which is something Americans especially do. I think it's related to things like asking "how are you?" without expecting an honest answer etc. It's a different kind of culture of politeness than what I'm used to. And I need a lot of personal space---If someone is too close to me when talking, that feels uncomfortable. Those were things I noticed when I lived in the US.

    • @gardtheaxolotl
      @gardtheaxolotl ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Finland? I know. My dad has been in america and people will most likely to speak to others if they can. And Ive noticed that America have bigger cups than other countries in europe. And theire shop is more unhealthy foods than others. (Sorry for my english. It my 3 language now.)

    • @Lsocs
      @Lsocs ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I totally get where you are coming from. The surprising thing to me is you experienced Americans being close to you when talking. Thats probably heavily dependent on where you went because Ive lived in america and been all over the west half of the country and giving people personal space is really important to the americans and people ive met and know.

    I used to tutor three young girls (sisters) when I was living in Japan. I went to their house for probably 3 years! Whenever I'd be talking to the oldest sister, she'd always stare into my face and I'd wonder what she was thinking. But now I'm pretty sure she was staring at me because I have green eyes!

    From my (German) experience Japanese people sometimes get too close.
    I think there is a study on how people living in more crowded cities naturally get closer to eachother than people who are used to having more space when walking outside.

    This topic is super insightful to hear from, as I've noticed Japanese people tend to think a lot more about the listener before they speak, especially compared to other countries abroad in North America and Europe. I'm currently studying language in Tokyo and trying my best to get to fluency before returning to pursue a Masters and Doctorate. The explanation phase when I frantically request a simpler dialog when I'm out and about「すみません、留学生なので、少しだけ簡単で説明していただけませんか」is always a little bit embarrassing, but I've found in general Japanese people are extremely extremely nice - even compared to Canada, where I come from. I always feel a bit guilty when people apologize for poor English, despite doing way more than people at home would to help a stranger - so I'm trying my best to study the language to properly express back, and develop some of the 感覚 to navigate the heavily context-based society.

    Thankyou for your insight. I went to Japan a few years back and was actually surprised and impressed with the friendliness of the people. If I was looking at a map or directions at the train station, often someone would come up and try to assist, apologising for their standard of English. And here's me unable to communicate in Japanese. So humble. I am 70 yrs and recall eye contact with two ladies same age on a street in Kyoto, un spoken desire to know each other better. Just direct eye contact and soft smiles and nods. I will never forget it. I loved my trip and hope to go back again soon. Keep giving advise please, the last thing I would want to do is offend.

I’m from Chile, and we kind of have the same customaries as you when it comes to Americans! Kenshow-kun! Such a great video. It came into my suggested videos and I am glad that I watched it. I just subscribed. I’m half Japanese but I don’t look like I am. I look Hispanic or Italian. So every time that I go to Japan, I can feel Japanese people are watching me and wondering how I’m going to act, especially when I go to areas like Ishinomaki or Sendai. I feel a little bit of extra pressure to act extremely polite and usually Japanese people are surprised that I speak Japanese and act Japanese even though I look like a foreigner. あの、I don't know about the 【want to help - part】because【Nobita from Japan】(famous youtuber) stated in one of his video's that his mother collapsed at Tokio station once and lay unconscious on the ground. NOBODY stopped to help Nobita-san and his mother. Finally, a great deal of time later, train-station staff helped them. BUT THEY ARE JAPANESE, NOT FOREIGNERS. How is that possible? As a foreigner living in Japan, I was apprehensive to watch this video! But I enjoyed it. I've found the opposite about Japanese people with regards to distance though. People get very close here (perhaps because you're used to being in smaller spaces?!) I often feel like I want to take a step back and protect my space! I noticed it the most when Covid was at its peak. Other countries had the 2m rule but everyone would stand so close to me.

I'm pretty sure it's my study methods, studying on and off because I'm in college while working a full-time job so my dedication with the language is questionable, and trying to fit in connecting with natives like my aunt from 沖縄. Also, your English is pretty understandable with some exceptions with plurals, but don't worry because my mom is from Cambodia and came to the US in the 1970s and her English is not that great so you're doing an excellent job.

    Thank you that was very helpful and it is easy to understand you. Much of what you have mentioned could also be found in other countries around the world and more so if English is a foreign language. The Japanese people are not alone in this area.
    Where they’re reluctant to help when they could and they don’t realize that whatever little English they’ve learnt is good enough, may be due to their culture of not talking to strangers and that’s okay. I believe that will change in the near future as more and more foreigners visit or even make Japan their home. Can’t wait to visit your beautiful country soon. Hullo from Geraldton WAustralia.

    When I went to Japan I had 3 Japanese men show me around and they all spoke English that I could understand. When we went somewhere like a restaurant, the aquarium or even Tokyo Tower, other Japanese never stared unkindly at us like: oh? There’s a black foreigner woman with a Japanese man! Never! They looked but it wasn’t a hostile look.
    Everybody was very kind and that’s why I love Japan. I was embarrassed when we’d get on the train because my Japanese friend Shingo would stand up as I sat and speak to be in English and everybody would stare.😂
    Being from the US it was a pleasure to see such respect for other people like when we waited to board the trains or how courteous people were to each other. Japan is always in my heart.❤

    I,m American and we are huggers. Don,t try to hug Japanese!! When meeting Japanese they bow and I just extend my hand to offer them a handshake. They can accept or not. But they mostly accept and it puts them at ease.

    These kinds of videos are excellent. Thanks KwnShow for the inside view. Your English is what I wish my Japanese could be like. Differences in culture is what this video is about for the most part? Eastern and Western cultures being the result of untoward amounts of time passing, will always be difficult to bridge. I think when one visits another Country one should be prepared to engage utilizing said Country's mores and values to a level that shows respect of that Country. Unfortunately, I'm in the minority POV as a Western person. Your video shouldn't be needed but alas, it always will be. I have the utmost respect for Japanese tourists as they are fighting their upbringing by simply leaving their Country for entertainment or whatever reason.

  • @CrissCrossCA
    @CrissCrossCA ปีที่แล้ว

    I think number 7 with the table manners should be common sense. At least where I grew up in germany you dont eat with your elbows on the table, support your head by holding it or not sit normally. People will think your parents didnt teach you proper etiquette if you do that.
    I really liked the video as it was really honest and interesting. Im glad I found this channel and I hope more videos are coming, you seem like a nice guy. Although I want to give a bit of criticism so you can improve.
    Your english is pretty good, I just feel like your pronunciation isnt perfect yet. I heared that they dont really practice that at japanese schools so it must be hard to improve but がんばってください. Btw I really liked the subtitles as I couldnt understand the part at 1:55 clearly.
    One general tip I want to give is that whenever I see, or rather hear, japanese people speaking english the most common mistake by far is that they omit words (like a/the/some etc.) which is probably because of the different sentence structure and the use of particles in japanese. So thats maybe another thing you might want to watch out for to further improve your english.
    Im looking forward for more videos in the future.

    "So if you feel the eyes of some people, think that you might be doing something wrong or too much attractive."
    I'm not entirely sure what that last part means. "Attractive" means "good-looking," and I am not sure if that is right? Is being too beautiful a faux pas in Japan?
    Your English really is very good, and it's clear that you have practice.

    As far as talking to strangers, it really depends on the person. I'm American and never talk to strangers and feel unconfortable when strangers talk to me. I'm very introverted and shy so I don't like it

    Very interesting video! I think that folks in the U.S. have a different expectation of expressing interest in a given conversation. For example, I look at the speaker intently and use subtle facial expressions to relay to the speaker that I’m interested in what they are speaking about, but nothing as overt as the Japanese people might do in the same context. (and I’m one of the more expressive people that I know lol)

    From everything you said, it sounds like the main obstacle is that most Japanese people just don't speak English. Seems like the solution would be for more of them to consider learning and practicing English. Language is a great doorway.

    To me I think japanese are great in kindness, we were once lost at osaka station a japanese man from no where came to help us and even go the extra mile. This is not a first time the train driver, taxi driver, bus driver just to name few. Japanese ppl are willing to help with open arm. That is why my favourite destination of tour I feel safe that for sure. 👍👍👍
