- When it comes to artists that strive to be recognised as singular entities within hip-hop, there’s nothing more frustrating than the public drawing parallels between them and their contemporaries. In order to better understand what’s transpiring, these attempts at comparison are made and for the most part, the rappers in question take them in their stride.
But for New York’s immaculately turned out kingpin ASAP Rocky and the Houston-raised, intergalactic traveller that we know as Travis Scott, the attempts to conflate the two has been a real bone of contention.

The common narrative is that Travis manifested the destiny that was meant for Rocky even though Rocky intentionally prioritised artistic expression over commercial success. It's like people are inadvertently calling him a failure despite his successes.

@@whodatboi2567 That's exactly it. Even when I was first listening to Rockys music I could tell that it could be a ton of hits, but was too niche for there to be a lot of commercial success. Travis is very artistic and creative as well, but his shit is just more attractive to the masses. Period. Add on the fact that Rockys lyrics take a lil more thought and you have someone who may appeal to a smaller audience.

love this comparison, asap took the more art and fashion route, being more edgy and experimental, à la Ye, while Trav took the mainstream, hits route, with amazing production and features galore. Rodeo tough is still one of the best albums in my opinion, i'd actually say its underrated. 90201 is one of the best songs ive ever heard.

If you ask me, his production and sound stands out compared to most rappers. Most artists right now have a Lil Uzi or Young Thug type of sound. The only artist that can be compared to him style-wise is Kid Cudi, who just so happens to be Travis' idol. But yes, both artists are very talented in their own respective lanes.

The thing is that "good music" is subjective (for example, I could consider intricate rhyme schemes and wordplay as good music, but I can also consider nursery rhymes over a masterfully created instrumental as good music too), but I get what you meant.
I completely agree on his sonic ability and production being top tier. He is extremely proficient in that field. Cudi is definitely among my favourite artists too.

For cultural impact I find it impossible not to give Rocky the point for that. Being on the scene since 2011, his sound is definitely very instrumental in pushing the sound to where it’s at now. I truly believe if there wasn’t an early rocky, there wasn’t gonna be a Travis in full effect, the way we got home now.
