The reason the coffee grounds work so well with wood chips is because wood chips when they decompose actually deplete the nitrogen levels. Coffee grounds are rich in nitrogen so it offsets the the nitrogen depletion and feeds the pumpkins.

💯% Back to Eden gardening works so well because Paul uses wood chip COMPOST (which includes green leaves and nitrogenous organic matter). Another benefit of aged compost is natural humic substances created from fungal decomposition. Humic acid + fulvic acid has been the best amendments in my garden (Neptune's Harvest has humic acid as an ingredient), yet I don't want mined sources because I learned about the lead, arsenic and other heavy metal content. I'm bummed I can't use commercial humic acid for instant results, yet I'll happily wait for good old time to do its magic for free.

They really dont unless you mix them into the soil... Sitting on top there is no big deal. But the will also decompose more slowly. This is why they add a nitrogen source to it to make organic matter. They are basically composting in place.
Been adding woodhips for many years now. And never had a nitrogen problem.

I love palm mulch cuz the florida weather eats everything. Any wood mulch I can get I love. Up to 5 trucks on tiny 1/4 acre in 2 years. Crazy how fast it gets eaten and turns right back to sand. Slowly adding more and more perennials and it slowly getting better.

I've been mixing woodchips with organic matter in composting for 40 years here in the UK & get around 30lb a week of a mixture of tea leaves, coffee grounds & discarded salad material from a local cafe. Add that to all the other organic material & I have roughly 2½ tons of compost every year to spread over just under 100yds² of actual growing beds
I add around 1-2" of my own compost on the beds every December & the same of wood chips on the paths between.
My soil has gone from pretty much 2" of topsoil over orange clay to 18" of dark brown, friable, no dig heaven in that time, rarely requires watering & never needs additional fertiliser.
Yield averages around 10lbs/sq yd on the open beds & double that in the polytunnel (this is continuos cropping with one harvest being immediately replaced with the next seasonal planting, eg autumn sown broad beans, harvested late May & replaced by leeks/brussels sprouts/french beans...)

MY special free ingredient I use with sawdust is my own urine. I also compost with azomite, and dolimitic lime or oystershell calcium which are not free. Coffee grounds are good too, but I generate only a little coffee grounds in my own home and I use that on my houseplants and some potted plants and I have discovered that coffee grounds also need a little sawdust added or it makes a hard crust on top of the pot that keeps water from penetrating. The sawdust experiment has been so successful that I really need to source more woodchips as well.

Hard to source enough coffee grounds for me. Live rurally, and everyone hits up the local coffee shop.
I do similar with the woodchips and bagged organic stutzman's chicken manure, plus I use hardwood ashes from my woodstove. It doesn't hurt to also amend with mycorrhizae (teas made from the fungal concentrate source). It turns the woodchip paths into mushroom farms that break the wood down quick.

I've been using it for years to keep cats out of the garden. Cats don't like it between their claws.

The southwest should not be planted. Heck, the southwest is a desert and people really shouldn’t even be living there. People are freaking out all of the sudden about the water supply but in reality we as humans should have never lived in those places to begin with. You have the news reporting about the crazy droughts in Arizona or New Mexico…I literally respond with: “humans should not be living in the desert, what do you think will happen when we do?” Yes, we will run out of water.

Where in nature does it add coffee grounds? Go back to the original movie and learn why the back to Eden method works And over time the wood chips will out perform the environmental damaging use of plastic

Why would anyone have raised beds in sand and that heat? Let alone cultivation. That is just plain stupid.

you're not going to see the full benefit in the first crop run , probably in 5 years the woodchips would outperform the plastic
