I remember back around 1975 I saw the real thing pass by our school playing fields as we were only a mile from Wigston South junction on the mainline from St Pancras to Leicester. I think the unit also ventured to the Old Dalby Test Track quite often during its development. It was what got me into railways as a kid, and a few friends and I would spend many lunchtimes catching the Class 45's on the main Leicester to London passenger runs, Class 25's on the London brick trains, class 31's on parcels etc. Compared to the BR Blue stuff of the time this was a taste of the future and looked impressive when we managed to see it fly by at speed from time to time.
I remember seeing the APT-E at York many years ago. (Part of me says it was just one of the power cars) My 14 year old brain was blown away by the design. I wish I could have seen it in operation.
I have one of these ordered from NRM + one extra carriage non DCC model, found the best way to connect the coaches was to lay it on it's side on a sponge strip and pre-apply a little clock oil to the yolk connector and had no difficulty in "clicking" it all together. Then simply tip it up onto the track. Wish I had ordered two of them like I did with the Underground "S" stock and the Bachmann Blue Pullman, the price of the APT-E was a steal.
Man, that thing is BEAUTIFUL, man, I'd love to see that running with the APT project when that is finished too, that would be an INCREDIBLE sight to behold!
I notice all quality locos come in those fiddly plastic containers that slide off, then pull the tab up to open the inner box, then remove the soft plastic wrapping.
what a great model , my Fathers company Dowty (Boulton Paul aerospace ) was called in late on, to try and solve problems with tilting . 4 + 1 Rover gas turbines in each power car , jet exhausts in roof !!!!! I think nose faring is removable , great Test Train interior , I just keep on noticing stuff . loving the chan😍😍nel
You are after protection for this unit, in HO/00 the type, is made in Germany by Train-Safe and is type HO2L. They use to have a UK importer, but alas no longer, so it is now direct from Germany. These display rectangular tubes, have inlaid track, so the train drives directly into the tube, untouched by human hands. End caps hold the train in tube
50:22 "The silence was deafening." :P What a noise that thing makes! And I thought 37's and the Swindon built hydraulics were as bad with noise pollution( but this things takes the biscuit!
The chaps at Rapido are definately a comical lot, their NA products are excellent and they are sticklers for details I believe their next UK project is the protoype HST power cars Great model great review
I need to give you a big thank you because you are the reason I got into trains and I absolutely love it. in one of my essays on an influential person I wrote about you and your channel. you truly are awesome ic82 :)
+Xantec Nope, that was the APT-P, the nose swung up over the cab window. This one had a plate under the nose which was removable for putting a bar coupling in. It was generally used for towing her around Derby RTC with a Mercedes Unimog RRV.
I have the Original APT-P set the very first trian that Hornby built and it is not new as Horndy already maked years ago and I have it on my still Original box
+Ever Free Gaming Unfortunately Rapido trains aren't cheap, well not in the US. Even starter sets are getting expensive, much less the first class overly expensive collectors stuff. I am not going to pay US $800 for any locomotive, not even a UP Big Boy.... US $80 to $160 is spending too much.... I wanted a new Hornby King class, but it isn't worth over US $200... Well, not in my book....
Outstanding review mate, really enjoyed watching the review and seeing the APT-E in action. I wonder if Rapido Trains will now do the APT like the one at Crewe Heritage Centre in InterCity livery
my question would be did they get the train to a passenger stage or was it just a red test vehicle that really never saw the light of day.. as a passenger service I would of thought it would come in a 9 car variant 2 loco, 2 sleeper, 3 passenger and 2 diner..
The 'E-train' (APT-E) never carried passengers, it only conducted tests for tilt and such, which assisted development of the APT-P (P meaning Prototype) which was electric. Unfortunately, the press around the latter was very poor due to delays and teething troubles.
can you review the cumbrian mountain express? Its n gauge, but i think it would be a nice part of your train team. P.S its a train pack no track, but it has a signal box you could put on your desk layout.
Just makes me wish i ordered one more. Although can always contact Locomotion. Although am going to get the Sterling Single and the HST Prototype though :D
+Ankdoeslego Why bother to do that when all you have to do is buy either the Hornby Elite controller or Elink controller. Yes, both are more expensive, but there will be future Select firmware updates, which isn't at all upgraded at home for firmware updates as both the Elite and Elink controllers. A Hornby design mistake, but the Select was never considered a professional controller, the Select was designed to be a entry level DCC controller, and therefore did not get a USB port interface for computer linkage for future firmware updates/upgrades. We are living in a digital world today, and in our digital world there will be software and firmware updates/upgrades. Even worst for Hornby presently, Hornby is no longer shipping Hornby North American transformers, not even as a separate additional order. My Canadian supplier has had to resort to a different supplier for both 1 amp and 4 amp transformers useable for the North American 110-120 volt electricity. It is as if Hornby doesn't want to sell in the US and Canada anymore...
Wow just Wow! Rapido have outdone themselves Fantastic Will although this loco is not my cup of tea i'm gona pre order the Stirling single Great video Will :-D
Good Job! If the APT-E was good, Why couldn't they make a whole bunch more of those instead of APT-P's. Speaking of that, are you still working on the Hornby APT? APT power car 49006 is at the Electric Railway museum in Baginton, in case you were unaware.
I love this model a lot but it makes me wonder one thing. Where is the APT Project? I want to see both of them running side by side on the proper layout! Like always great video and keep on making them.
Yes I was wondering about the APT project, that would be a great thing to complete and have both APT's going around the new layout or whizzing around the conservatory !
Hi will or everyone in the world I won the bachmann western wanderer set in a raffle and I do not know if I should run it in half an hour in each direction or an hour in each direction ? Please help for I do not want to destroy it
If the Great Central Railway get there new museum this will leave Shildon and go down there which is a shame because the shed was special built at the length it is to accommodate this train. Ps. Have u been to see Scotsman yet?
+Jacob Wilson Incorrect. It's worth every single penny. We costed that it should cost nearer £500 for what you get in the box, so as it happens, they've performed a miracle to make it for £350 and make profits for the manufacturer, Rapido, and Locomotion.
+Jacob Wilson Well, it's not just "one locomotive". It's two highly detailed and lit DCC sound-equipped powered locos and two highly detailed and lit trailer cars.
Great model but very noisy!! I just wonder who would be brave enough to run it at a model railway exhibition as I reckon it would annoy nearby exhibitors! I couldn't see on the video but does it tilt?
in all of the years BR has existed this must have been one of the best things they did ........ does anyone agree
thumbs up if you do
+Alfie Whittaker had* existed :P
thumbs up
👍 thumbs up
Stop asking for likes.

Absolutely fabulous. The interior details look so real you expect to see one of the APT engineers checking the computer banks .
I remember seeing the APT-E at York many years ago. (Part of me says it was just one of the power cars) My 14 year old brain was blown away by the design. I wish I could have seen it in operation.
This is great I love the APT-E one of my favourite trains
12:05 *AWESOME SLOW SPEED THINGY!*
OH HELLO THERE
Absolutely adore those gas turbine engines. No nicer noise than a turbine starting.
this has to be the most beautiful train u ever reviewed in my opinion
Keep calm and love model trains!

I WANT ONE. It is so cool. perfect sounds, such detail. Great review as always guys.
Man, that thing is BEAUTIFUL, man, I'd love to see that running with the APT project when that is finished too, that would be an INCREDIBLE sight to behold!
gosh this is so detailed carnet wait for the gnr single
I notice all quality locos come in those fiddly plastic containers that slide off, then pull the tab up to open the inner box, then remove the soft plastic wrapping.
I've been waiting for this my whole life
This makes me so excited for the N guage Pendolino they are releasing! I purchased an 11 car set with sound!
I suggest that you should visit the Wensleydale railway starting from Leeming bar.
I got to sit in the front of this a Shildon with one of the guys who worked on it and designed the turbines. It was so cool
Well, they were Leyland truck gas turbines...

Wow the apt-e looks so amazing and so realistic.
The chaps at Rapido are definately a comical lot, their NA products are excellent and they are sticklers for details I believe their next UK project is the protoype HST power cars
Great model great review
ps Oh yes its still snowing in Cda today lol
Wow, can't wait for the GNR Single
2nd radius or greater is standard on most models that aren't tank engines or small shunter diesels which can do 1st radius.
WOW the overhang on that nose on those corners is quite substantial. I think for a lot of layouts that is gonna be a problem.
I've been to NRM Shildon quote quite a few times. The APT E is amazing. The model is like they just shrunk the real model
I need to give you a big thank you because you are the reason I got into trains and I absolutely love it. in one of my essays on an influential person I wrote about you and your channel. you truly are awesome ic82 :)
I’ve signed up for the n gauge version hopefully it comes out cause this OO looks wonderful
It's an amazing looking model, I've got a Stirling single on order and I can't wait :).
WOW..... Excellent model and an excellent video.....
I'm looking forward to Rapido train's Stirling single; I'll probably try and find the money to order that when it comes out.
I've noticed that one or two of these that were inevitably bought for investment purposes have started to resurface on the secondary market already.
The packaging is great just on it's own!
APT-E nose
I think it swung out of the way to allow towing by locomotive
+Xantec Nope, that was the APT-P, the nose swung up over the cab window. This one had a plate under the nose which was removable for putting a bar coupling in. It was generally used for towing her around Derby RTC with a Mercedes Unimog RRV.
Would be nice if the real version got fired up and put onto the mainline
good vid and review
I hope the gnr Stirling single is just as good
I’m pretty sure this is Rapido Canada’s first train that was manufactured in OO
My new favourite train!
this train is priceless
Great presentation
I have never seem him more interested in a box! :D
Hi will again if u do anymore vids on your ngauge layout you should get the N700 Shinkansen bullet train
Nice video when can you do the premium Javelin
Such a awesome loco.
APT-E is very near to my heart as I live in Co. Durham, so I visit Locomotion at Shildon often. Perks of being a northeasterner, eh?
Stood in the cab of this
I have the Original APT-P set the very first trian that Hornby built and it is not new as Horndy already maked years ago and I have it on my still Original box
"This has less computer memory than your washing machine..."
Will from IC82-2016
why no more videos ??
Rapido is a Canadian company, so it's nice that he's doing trains that came from a company that is based I think in Toronto, near my house
The APT-P looked way better
+Ever Free Gaming Unfortunately Rapido trains aren't cheap, well not in the US. Even starter sets are getting expensive, much less the first class overly expensive collectors stuff. Outstanding review mate, really enjoyed watching the review and seeing the APT-E in action. I wonder if Rapido Trains will now do the APT like the one at Crewe Heritage Centre in InterCity livery
There is also one in Crewe
I know
MAN the sleeve of the Rapido Trains on that is WAY better than Hornby's

can you do a 38xx or the 3803 steam train please
What happened to the "Your Model Railway" and "Building a Model Railway" series?
That's not very kind... l:(
my question would be did they get the train to a passenger stage or was it just a red test vehicle that really never saw the light of day..

When can you do apt project part 2?
could you do a review of the calidonian belle set plz
can you review the cumbrian mountain express? Its n gauge, but i think it would be a nice part of your train team. P.S its a train pack no track, but it has a signal box you could put on your desk layout.
i like the oddballs... turbotrain, aerottrain, apt-e, senator, talgo, etc. :-)
Will, I've got a question for you; Do you think I should get rid of my LEGO Train to by more 00 gauge or keep the LEGO Train?
how excited were you ??
Just makes me wish i ordered one more. Although can always contact Locomotion. Although am going to get the Sterling Single and the HST Prototype though :D
how about making a video of bachmann tgv.
The Hornby Select has had a firmware update so you can get all the sound. Just send it to Hornby and they will do the rest.
+Ankdoeslego Why bother to do that when all you have to do is buy either the Hornby Elite controller or Elink controller. +SeaToby11 I got mine in a set as a gift so I have no other controller to use. It will do until I can afford an Elite controller.
+Ankdoeslego One of the really annoying things it's still not compatible with most chips just Hornby ones
great video
do you have any tips on what ishould have on my lner railway
Cool unit
how long till you think your proper layout willbe finished
Wow just Wow! Rapido have outdone themselves Fantastic Will although this loco is not my cup of tea i'm gona pre order the Stirling single Great video Will :-D
Can you do Class 171 form Bachmann soon?
Do you have a duke of Gloucester
OMG only one word to say WOW

Cool video
Hi will or everyone in the world I won the bachmann western wanderer set in a raffle and I do not know if I should run it in half an hour in each direction or an hour in each direction ? Please help for I do not want to destroy it
Consult the manual. They normally recommend an hour in each direction.
What happened to the APT project?
The final nail in the coffin of BR . . .
Is it possible for me to buy a British train set from you?
39:43 what is name of music?!
Can you do a Thomas review of james
If the Great Central Railway get there new museum this will leave Shildon and go down there which is a shame because the shed was special built at the length it is to accommodate this train.
Ps. Have u been to see Scotsman yet?
amazing
Where is the APT-P project???
What is an APT-P I only know of APT-E's XD (Jokes)
whats happening with the APT-P Project? Are you still uploading them?
Can you please make a Lego rms titanic series
how does this channel now have 100.000 subs yet :(
I have never heard of Rapido Trains before! How much did this APT-E cost?
£350
Way too much money! Nearly for £400.00? You must be joking and jest! Are they hand-built or something, for that sort of money?
+Jacob Wilson Incorrect. It's worth every single penny. We costed that it should cost nearer £500 for what you get in the box, so as it happens, they've performed a miracle to make it for £350 and make profits for the manufacturer, Rapido, and Locomotion.
I agree that it is worth the money, just a lot to spend in one go on a model railway locomotive.
+Jacob Wilson Well, it's not just "one locomotive". It's two highly detailed and lit DCC sound-equipped powered locos and two highly detailed and lit trailer cars.
each to his or her own
Great model but very noisy!! I just wonder who would be brave enough to run it at a model railway exhibition as I reckon it would annoy nearby exhibitors! I couldn't see on the video but does it tilt?
RAPIDO ? please tell me i readed wrong
