Ok as someone who is a Massive Mario nerd, and played only the original 2008 M&S Olympic games, I am FLABBERGASTED about these songs, because I literally never knew these amazing remixes existed! I just assumed all the M&S games used generic music like the first since I never played any of the other games. But I love how similar yet also completely changed many of these remixes are, it's very different to how, say, Smash Bros remixes songs like these!
I'll never forget in M&S 2014 when they did a rendition of Peach's Secret Slide and nonchalantly made far and away the BEST version of the song ever. Like they went so far as to write a sax and guitar solo over the chord progression and a phenomenal buildup at the end to the start of the loop, it's insane.
1:20 In F-Zero GX, which was made by SEGA and came out in 2003, there are remixes of SNES' Mute City and Big Blue themes, so that would be an earlier instance of Nintendo music being remixed by SEGA.
Smash Ultimate also featured SEGA composers remixing Nintendo music, and the main composer for the Olympic games (and most 3D Sonic games) Tomoya Ohtani even put the same breakbeat drums Cadence talked about at 4:30 over Bomb Rush Blush from Splatoon.
I am devastated that Mario and Sonic got left in the dust. It was my childhood growing up and I always loved unlocking the awesome remixes that the SEGA sound team did for every game. Such a shame that such an iconic franchise could get shut down that easily.
OG Bowser's Galaxy Generator gave me chills when I heard it again, I love that song and that game so much. lot of memories tied to it. Imagine my surprise when they took that track and changed the feel and genre entirely, making a remix that is unique and stands out in its own right, while maintaining a bit of that grandiose quality
Omg I LOVED that you highlighted Vento Brasileiro, one of my favorite tracks to ever come out of the series. While the remixes are a work of art, I do wish people gave the original soundtrack some love too with Rio 2016 being my absolute fav in this regard. Great video like always!
1:50 If I’m not mistaken, the remix of GBA bowser castle actually uses the DS version of the song as a base. Not only does it share a lot of instruments, but you can also hear the “GO!” Sound effect that plays when the race starts in several parts of the song. They most likely just recorded gameplay from the ds through a mic and then added extra instruments on top to fill it out better than the DS could.
Bowser Galaxy Generator is late 70s/early 80s disco + funk + jazz + rock. It really has the feel of the disco arranges of the late 70s, like Meco's Star Wars disco remix
4:00 That part of the song actually transitions pretty well into the other one the way you set it up. Makes me think it would be better if they kept the original melody for the first part before easing into the more dissonant version, and then going into that cool key change after a bit. Just my opinion though
I am really astounded by the amount of passion in what you do, I am slowly forcing myself back to music theory because I never had the luck of having such a great teacher as you who makes it seem easy and fun, and I really am having fun!! watching all your videos doesn’t seem like the burden I always thought music theory is In a nutshell, please don’t stop what you do, you deserve millions of views and I love the passion and effort you put into these videos!
Mario & Sonic in the Olympic Games did to Bowser's Galaxy Generator what MECO did to the Star Wars OST and was amazing (look up Star Wars and Other Galactic Funk, it's incredible).
This is a fantastic video! Please make more jazz anaylsis of the Mario franchise! So much to dissect, especially with tunes such as Bowsers Castle and Mount Wario from MK8. Thanks! - fellow Jazz and Nintendo lover
The entire Mario & Sonic Rio 2016 OST is so good and underrated. I haven't played the game since 2017 (my Wii U isn't working, and I never owned the game anyway), but I still listen to its music. My favorites are probably both of the football themes, especially the fact that both have two versions depending on whether you're in the midfield or close to a goal. I wouldn't mind if you talked more about the OST and analyzed it in a future video.
The more I listen to Vento Brasilero, the more I think it could be another beach themed music in a Super Mario Galaxy game. One of the bridges reminds me of the ones in the beach world theme of Super Mario Galaxy 1 (and the ending reminds, ironically, to the pre-loop-repeat lick at Sonic the Hedgehog 3's Carnival Night Zone, inspired in Michael Jackson's Jam)
I like to think the lack of remixes in the last 2 mainline olympic installments was kind of remedied (at least in terms of sonic) with sonic at the olympic games 2020 and sonic rumble
another excellent sega remix of a nintendo song is the remix of bomb rush blush from smash ultimate. it truly is a remix and sounds very different from the original but it slaps so hard
6:33 I remember playing the underwater by ear, and in my mind it sounded like the F figure was F Fdim F (unlike the first line Bb A Bb). I was so sure that they didn't use the (exact) same tool twice, that I was about to write a comment correcting you. But then I thought I should make sure, I listened to the original, and... nope, I'm wrong, you're right. My bad

Does anyone know what specific genre vento brasileiro 1 is? There is something super weird and hip going on rhythmically and I would love to hear more, but the only genre of brazilian music I know the name of is bossa nova so I don't really know how to find more like it.
This has me wondering if any other studio else has ever done official remixes of Nintendo tracks. Assumedly yes, and if it hasn’t flown under the radar then i’m just a dingus.

Nintendo making great games. SEGA making great music for their games. Really wish these two could just team up and make a Mario and Sonic game that wasn’t a sports game. Everything about it would be incredible.
Bowser's galaxy generator reminds me a lot of how mk8 remixed some of their tracks, especially cloudtop cruise. long strings, big french horn (?) chords, funky percussion… neato The start and end of rhythmic gymnastics remind me a bit of parts of the snipperclips OST, e.g. in noisy notebook C. …I don't like the rest of the track tbh. dunno why, just not my groove ig.
Cloudtop Cruise isn't a remix, it's a original track. Yes, you could say it's heavily inspired by Gusty Garden Galaxy (heck, they took the climax from GGG and shortened it), but it's definitely not a remix.
The intro to Rhythmic Gymnastics almost sounds like an upside down version of this lick in Tank! by The Seatbelts which is the Cowboy Bebop theme. m.th-cam.com/video/UFFa0QoHWvE/w-d-xo.html
Ah yes, Waluigi, the peak of human athletic ability.
You should see him play baseball lol, he's like 8 feet tall
Nintendo imprisons him in the sports games, he is quite literally the apex of human athletic ability in the Mushroom Kingdom.

Since you like the "simple melody, complex harmony", go after "Samba de uma nota só" or "One Note Samba" by Tom Jobim.
The OSTs in these games are so underrated. Always trust Segas music team to cook, especially when Sonic is involved.
