Making a MINI Detailed Terrarium

- Another terrarium build in the books and this on is a MINI Detailed Terrarium! I've been wanting to make this one for awhile now and I decided the other day that it was finally time to make it happen. My goal with this one was to show you that even if you're limited to working on a small scale, you can still make a pretty cool terrarium. Of course I already showed you the Tiny Native Terrariums, but as I've said on many occasion, those are sort of a gimmick. Although they do work, they're not practical. This one on the other hand is small enough that it's appealing, but large enough that it's still practical. Not to mention that something like this can be made for very little money given the size of the jar.
When all was said and done I think this terrarium turned out pretty well, but it's not as detailed as I would have liked it to be. In all honestly I didn't take a ton of time being a perfectionist because of my current situation, so maybe we'll revisit this project or make something similar in the future. That said, I do think this terrarium is detailed enough to warrant the title and I like... I usually like all of my terrarium though. :)

The details and the size almost make it seem like you were building a tank for the springtails ... instead of the springtails just being a helpful addition

At 10:31 you mentioned the word "bones" and that made me think... have you ever thought about putting bones in a terrarium before? Personally, I think that would be pretty neat. Maybe you could purchase some owl pellets and sort out some bones that would be cool in a mini terrarium?? Something to think about, eh?

Yes very good idea!
Several people do this but bones will break down in time if they are in contact with too much moisture. It's best to use sand underneath the skull/bones or put it on a mini platform (dried bark/flat stone) to keep it away from water.
I’ve done this with some of my larger terrariums, it does add a cool aesthetic but yes, they do break down in more humid environments
I believe some people use it for calcium supplementation- ( correct me if i used a wrong C term )

I just wanted to say that, as an Educator (for a long time...) you are a surprisingly effective and articulate speaker, and with a very relaxed, casual and enjoyable style. There's an old saying, you can always tell when someone is speaking through the filter of "I know what I know, and I know it cold."
I know this video is older but I've been scrawling your whole channel for a couple of weeks now and wanted to say I've tried this!! I combined this idea with the native terrarium video and got a whole bunch of stuff from around my place and out them in little jars. I found some really neat plants I still need to identify, but I had so much fun and I'm definitely hooked. Thanks for these cool videos :D
I do very small and micro scale terrariums and one tip I would give you is to wet the bottom of the moss so when you stick it in the container it will kind of stick to the bottom of the substrate. I hate when you have it in a good place and you pull your tweezers out and the moss comes back up. This used to happen to me all the time. I enjoyed this video. I love mini stuff!
How often do you re-water the terrariums?

I’m an animal attendant student (idk is this the right term in english, but basically I’m studying to take care of different animals haha!) and recently we’ve been talking about vivariums at school and thinking of making one as a project.

this was inspiring for me. I think I might try an experiment that I will go out and find a real full size nature scape either in my yard, in the forests or parks around me. photo it and try to build a hard scape in various sizes of bottles based on that. I would also collect things from said location, then use those to build the terrariums out. hummmm... love your stuff Tanner
I liked it very much! The size was very nice, not too small but just perfect if you have a small apartment.

Both. Playing god to make something beautiful and completely controlled.
I realy learned a lot from your videos! I build them myself now since I have a house with no garden or balcony.. my room is getting full now hahaha but I love nature and this is just a easy but satisfying way to have nature at home! thank you!!
The terrarium really came to life after you put the Springtails in because they added the element of movement. So adorable!

"Sorry bro" ah ! ah ! Great tiny terrarium. I made my first last week and have some kind of spider web between a piece of oak and the soil, and grey/blue rot on the wood... Perhaps too much moisture inside ? Too much water at the beginning ? Keep doing videos like this, and greatings from France !

I just recently learned about these little terrariums and am very interested, but have a few questions...
Sorry if this sounds weird but can the plants breath when the lid is on...? Or do they not need to?
Also where might I obtain some springtails (if that's the correct name)? And is it possible to make a terrarium without them?

The air inside the terrarium already is sufficint for the plants to breathe, and if the lid is pourous enough it won't matter. The springtails are completely optional, however they are very helpful at maintaining the terrarium, and takes away the need for you to clean them regularly. You can buy springtail cultures on ebay for very cheap.

Hey great build, love the mini terraria's! Also today I made my own terrarium for the first time! Can you, or anyone tell me if I should vent the terrarium the first week or more or so or close it right away? I have no idea !
You shouldn't have to vent it unless it's always condensated. If so, occasionally vent or remove excess moisture with a paper towel until it only happens occasionally.
Hey, awesome videos filled with easily explained to the point content tied together with smooth transitions, keep up the amazing work. I've always wanted to do something naturalistic like this with my ball python enclosure but don't really have a place to start. I've decided I don't use live plants since I don't want the hassle of maintaining them. also using spray foam to make the background seems like it will work since I have a large enclosure to cover. I was wondering if you have or could make a video explaining all the elements of the prosses such as what or where to put the hardscape and what the difference between the layers. Also do you know of any fake plants that look realistic enough to not stand out from the rest of the enclosure Kind regards Tom

It is so nice to watch all your work with moss in the glasses. Now I have a question, please. The tiny springtails aren't adults jet. Will they grow up in that glass? And what's the matter then? Will you take them out to let them out into the nature because the glass ist to small for all of them??? And another question about the water. Do you only put that 5 or 6 drops only one time because the glass is closed with the cork oder will you do it again. Sorry for my English. I am writing from Germany and I left School 1984 ;-) So Google is helping me ;-) Hope the best for you.
I think that hardware store gravel is crushed bluestone. It compacts very nicely

Hi Tanner, yet another cool crafting. Just curious about how to make the craft content look different from others? I tried to mimic mini terrariums, with native content, however, I'm yet to achieve a real craft look inside those I did.. the types of moss you use add a lot more beauty to the content.. I do not know where to find such types here in the surroundings that I live.. Very very interesting. Thank you for the video

Loved the video! I’ve been trying so hard to catch some spring tails and not having much luck :( I’m in Aus and can’t find starter cultures for sale. Any advice??
If you know anyone with a compost bin you can probably find a few in there. Got mine from my parents compost bin 🙂

I am not sure spring water is an alternative to purified, considering the process in which "spring" water is collected, often leaves it with some, if not MORE impurities than tap water, due to how it is transported from spring, to facility, sadly. Anyone else have info on this potential truth? Great video Tanner!

I have some questions. I don't have mold in my terrarium, but say there was an outbreak. Is that good or bad? And second, I don't have the most tightest cap to my terrarium. Is that terrible or is it fine. Thanks for the response!

Do you have to add spring tails? Would some other bug work? Or could it work without bugs?

Could you make a terrarium out of a square bottle like that and could you use dirt during winter from your yard
I was wondering if it would work to use the charcoal layer as a drainage barrier? I mostly use moss in my terrariums so roots aren’t really an issue but if I also introduce small plants like clover will roots grow past a heafty layer of charcoal?
Yeah you'll be fine to make your false bottom's drainage layer out of charcoal. Just break it up into gravel sized pieces and sift out the dust.

You mentioned the type of water to use. Does distilled water count?

Ruby Cornista I think a closed terrarium would be to moist of an environment for succulents
most succulents need soil that drains well and need times where the soil will dry almost completely before watering again.
As everyone else has said, closed terrariums aren't suitable for succulents unfortunately.
