People keep tigers as pets, the problem isn't that they aren't friendly, the problem is like a house cat they can get overstimulated and tear you to bits, but you know, not in a metaphorical sense because they weigh hundreds of pounds.

My guess is they just estimated it based on how ridiculously slow its metabolism is. Its body doesn't need to do anything often, including respiration.

The peacock's feathers making him the center of attention is technically a massive L for males, but it kind of allows to preservate the species. If a predator approaches, he's likely to leave the females be and since it's the females that have to lay eggs and stuff it somewhat helps them to be more discrete. This is the case for a bunch of other birds too.

About the whole "if Sid were realistically sized he'd wear Diego like a fur coat" that's the thing - they originally did try to make him "realistic" (as per Megalonyx) but this resulted in him looking too Uncanny Valley so they made him a mixture of a modern sloth and an ancient ground sloth, stunting his looks on purpose. And having seen some fan creations showing Sid with "realistic" ground sloth proportions I'm glad they went with the modern sloth mixed with a stunted ground sloth becos otherwise he would just be too odd-looking _and_ off-putting, character design wise, so I think they made the right choice.

Actually if you find a kiwi with attitude those claws can be deadly, my son once saw a kiwi kick the sh** out of a possum, literally took an eye out. The guy who owned the farm said happens all the time, just that one kiwi who lost his mum to a possum now makes a point of hunting them.

This is an antelope. The difference is that their horns are made from bone and keratin and they also don’t branch out. Deer dont have horns, they have antlers made from bone and skin and they branch out. Two very different types of animals!
In defense of the cheetah, they have significantly higher hunting success rate than most big cat at 58%. They make enough kill to offset the fact that they usually get grief by Hyena and Lion. Also, since Lion spend like 1/4 of the day waking up, cheetah can just avoid hunting during that time period.
I feel like the next episode should be a counter to this "animals that got a high five from evolution"

I'm really surprised you didn't mention the male anglerfish. Everyone who's seen Finding Nemo knows what a female anglerfish looks like. Males aren't like that. They're tiny creatures that can barely fend for themselves. When they find a female, they latch onto her by biting her. Over time, he literally fuses with her and loses all his organs except his gonads. She then continues to swim around with these attached gonads, able to fertilize herself whenever she wants. She can also carry multiple ex-males at a time. That's literally the only purpose of male anglerfish, to become a ballsack.

I am sooo appreciative of you for the hyena segment! It sucks what this animal goes through (male and female) and on top of that, as you said TLK did them dirty. They are my favorite animal but so underrated. You forgot the sloth's one defense: being the nastiest motherfucker in the jungle. They smell and taste so bad that most predators won't eat them unless they're starving. It's like that scene in Jurassic Park 2 where they had to dig through dinosaur shit to find a cell phone. Then a big therapod carnivore sneaks up and almost eats them, but changes its mind and walks away after smelling them. That's the single defense evolution gave sloths.

You know what’s the worst thing about cheetahs? On their own, they’re actually pretty solid. It’s just the fact that they happen to live in one of the most hardcore ecosystems on the planet that makes them complete pushovers in comparison.

Not only that, but if a Cheetah injured a foot they’re done. They’re solitary animals so they don’t have any other Cheetahs to hunt for them, and speed is what gets them their kills.
@@Royal_Keith actually, Planet Earth documented an instance of three cheetahs working as a pack to take down an ostrich, a prey item that would be nigh impossible for a solo cheetah.
Don't know how common that is, but it's still fascinating.

The cheetah chirp is actually a good thing because it makes nearby predators think that they are a bird and not the push-over they are.

I've always maintained that Cheetahs are a prime candidate for domestication. They'd be an ideal hunting partner on par with a coursing hound and would benefit from human protection. We've already proven that this is possible with Foxes.
The problem is that humans don’t strictly speaking need to hunt anymore, and considering all the damage we’ve done to the natural world we should probably avoid killing any more wildlife unless it’s necessary, which it usually isn’t.
Also cheetahs just aren’t practical as pets, since they’re basically the same as house cats except bigger, which means they require more space to run around and a lot more food. So while cheetahs would probably be the easiest to domesticate of the big cats, there’s not much practical utility to doing so, except perhaps to save them from extinction if their natural habitat can’t sustain them anymore because of human activity.
And while it’s true that we’ve successfully domesticated foxes, they’re still rather messy animals that require a lot of space to run around, making them less practical than cats or dogs for most people. And I suspect we would run into similar problems with cheetahs.

Fun fact about cheetahs: they aren’t even considered to be big cats. I mean yes, they are cats, and they are big. But the big cat family consists out of animals like loins, tigers, etc. Cheetahs are just so weird that they basically have a group of their own. They don’t really fit anywhere. They are also weirdly docile to humans compared to any other animal that looks like them. Oh and yeah they can purr. They are basically just overgrown housecoats with permanent zoomies.

You can graft skin tissue between any 2 cheetahs on earth and its just like grafting skin from the cat you got it from. The huge nasal cavity to feed the massive cardiopulmonary system means smaller canine teeth so cheetahs have to suffocate their prey, unlike a jaguar who can literally bite through a victim's neck vertebrae.

If you like Cheetahs, know there's still hope for them. Lately, younger Cheetahs have been observed to create packs, something previously unheard of from them. It's at its very early stages, but this collaboration has been shown to highly increase their probability for a good meal without disturbances. Basically, nature is forcing them into socialization.

I have seen cheetahs getting bullied SO MANY TIMES. They're so used to getting owned by hyenas, when they catch something they just inhale it in like 5 minutes.

There is a way cheetahs can turn it around faster than all the others on this list, and that is by becoming more docile and friendly towards people. I could see people owning a cheetah like dogs just because of potential likability. Also if someone can find a use for them be it being some kind of guard cat, or something else.

Something I actually learned about cheetahs in my bio class was that cheetahs are bad at regulating heat, so they can literally run into their graves. They heat up so much that they will just die mid sprint. Nature made its bigger strength one of its bigger weaknesses

Directly from a geographic article: "In 1973, two Harvard scientists bought a couple of hand-reared cheetahs from an African farmer, flew the animals over to their laboratory, made them run on treadmills, and stuck thermometers up their bums. Based on the readings, they concluded that cheetahs can’t lose heat quickly enough while running. Once their body temperature hits 40.5 degrees Celsius, they’re forced to stop.
It was a groundbreaking experiment, but an incredibly artificial one. The cheetahs had lived in captivity for their entire lives, and they were running in a lab rather than a savannah. They ran at 30 kilometres per hour for 2 kilometres whereas, in the wild, they sprint for just a few hundred metres but at speeds of up to 100 km per hour.
And yet, based on this single contrived set-up, it became common knowledge that cheetahs abandon hunts because they overheat. You’ll find that little factoid in zoo placards, books, and wildlife documentaries. It seems plausible, especially since cheetahs are the world’s fastest land animals. They’re also relatively inefficient hunters that only kill 40 percent of the prey they chase. In some cases, they seem to give up even when their quarry is within range. Is that because they get too hot? Sure. Why not? It has the ring of truth.
It’s not true.
Robyn Hetem from the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa has disproved this myth by actually studying wild hunting cheetahs. She worked with six animals from the Tusk Trust Cheetah Rehabiliation Park, which allows orphaned or injured animals to hone their hunting skills before returning to the wild. Her team surgically implanted two sensors into each cheetah-one in their hips to track their movements, and another in their bellies to track their temperature. For seven months, the cheetahs did their thing and Hetem watched.
Her data showed that their body temperature naturally fluctuates between 37.3 and 39.5°C over the course of a day, and hunting doesn’t change that. Despite their enormous speed and acceleration, they barely get any hotter while sprinting. And while they finished successful hunts with an average body temperature of 38.4°C, they finished unsuccessful ones at… 38.3°C. That’s a definition of “overheating” that I’m unfamiliar with.
Clearly, cheetahs don’t give up because of heat. They do, however, heat up more if they actually catch something. In the 40 minutes after they stopped, their temperature rose by 0.5°C if they had flubbed their chases, but by 1.3°C if they made a kill.
This wasn’t due to the ambient temperature, the length of the chase, or how fast the cheetahs ran. It wasn’t due to the act of killing, since that only takes 10 minutes. It wasn’t due to energetic eating either, since cheetahs take long rests before tucking into their prey.
Instead, Hetem thinks it’s a sign of stress. Cheetahs are built for speed not strength, and they can be easily overpowered by other plains predators like lions, hyenas or leopards. Indeed, a leopard actually killed two of the six cheetahs that Hetem was studying! This means that a freshly killed carcass could attract deadly competitors, as well as providing a meal, which is why other biologists have described cheetahs as being “nervous at kills” and “alert when feeding”. Hetem thinks that their temperatures rise as a result."
