Sound didn't arrive into mainstream until the late 1920's. It was in the experimental stage in the mid 20's from what I can recall. But he sure transcended into it. Its great. The legend has a voice.
Zeek Banistor Please. Jack is considered arguably the greatest of all time. He was in the twilight of his career when he fought Willard. Gee, I cannot help but wonder the motive behind your comment.
@Zeek Banistor what's your point? Willard got beat to a pulp by Jack Dempsey. Every fighter has his prime and eventually passes the torch, losing doesn't take anything away from their legacy.
Once, when he was pulled over for a $50 speeding ticket (a large sum at the time), he gave the officer a $100 bill; when the officer protested that he couldn't make change for that much, Johnson told him to keep the change, as he was going to make his return trip at the same speed
Jack Johnson was a very sophisticated person, despite what people thought of him. He learn how to read and write at a young age, he was in to art and opera, and he also spoke Spanish and French.
I first saw this clip many years ago and was always impressed at how articulate Johnson was for a guy who probably didn't receive much of an education growing up in the 1800's. He speaks better than most professional athletes today who are supposedly college educated. It's too bad the quality of his fight films aren't as good as this clip.
One must admire Jack Johnson, A man's man, He really handled himself extremely well back then, His stand for equality & turned his cheek to the system is unprecedented, He truly broke the color Barrier even shattered in some cases, He was 40 yrs before Jackie Robinson & 20 years before Josephine Baker, His charisma & mannerisms are emulated today especially by Ali.......

God Bless You Jack.. God Bless Everyone who dares to FREE THEIR MIND.. PEACE
He could play with fighters like Ali did. Because of when he did what he did he is my favorite all-time athlete not just heavyweight fighter.Waày ahead of his time. RIP Papa Jack. You were the greatest!
Good comment. I think it was the writer Stanley Crouch, who said that Johnson (like Ali) could help his opponent 'kick his own ass".....lolol. That how great Jack & Ali were as defensive fighters!!
This footage is great, it gives us a great insight into Johnsons character, he really was a classy guy as well as a talented fighter. Also such a witty and intellectual mind, great to hear him speak!
100 years after winning the title in 1908, he was reincarnated as Barack Obama, winning the presidency. Much to his chagrin, he got as much shit for being the first black President as he did for being the first black heavyweight champion. He was amazed how much things hadn’t really changed much in 100 years.
@Johnl1800 almost ruins the documentary Unforgiveable Blackness b/c Samuel Jackson gave his voice a heavy southern drawl and he cleary was very well spoken
Dang just looked it up and Jack Johnson boxed in America in 1926-31, having a couple year overlap with Jack Dempsey who stopped boxing in 1927 just a couple states away. What a dream match that would’ve been

Jack Johnson was one of the first who really started to understand boxing as something that requires combinations, timing, defense, and strategy instead of just the one big hit. He was a defensive genius of his time.
Funny how Jack Johnson and Sonny Liston were considered uneducated (They probably were) But they could speak better than the so called Black Entertainers like P diddy or Jay Z that we have today.
Doesn t this prove that black people are versatile and can do it all this man, was the greatest boxer of all time before Muhamad Ali and orchestrated his own band back in the 1900s back then i think boxers fought like 20 something rounds i saw a documentary on Jack Johnson he owned his own businesses was like 100 something wins invented the wrench but didn t have it copy written.
When I saw KEN BURNS DOCUMENTARY ON JACK JOHNSON, I REALLY ENJOYED IT. IT'S INTERESTING THAT THERE WAS NO FOOTAGE OF JOHNSON SPEAKING. JUST VOICE OVER WITH SAMUEL L JACKSON
If you watch the Ken Burns documentary, Jack's parents insisted all their kids be literate. And as former slaves, they were nonetheless homeowners in Galveston in 1878. They sound impressive.
What the fucking hell is this obsession with the Klitchkos? Evander could drop both of them, a prime Tyson would destroy them, and young and witty Johnson would pound then.
I think what is interesting about this video, besides putting a voice to a legendary name, is the interesting linguistic study this is. Jack grew up in Texas, but he doesn't sound at all like what you would expect a Texan to sound like, because he grew up in Texas in the 19th century, and the language has changed since then. I got to thinking about this because I saw a video of Red Dead Redemption 2, and one of the characters from the Bayou area of the game spoke with a very modern "black" accent (for lack of a better term) and it made me realize that that speech pattern would have likely been alien to the people of that time. I knew Jack fought around the turn of the century, when the game was supposed to be taking place, and I wanted to see if there was any footage of him speaking, since he was famous and well known for being pretty outspoken. I'm not sure if he represents the typical speech patterns of the era, but it is still a very unique pattern to my modern ear
Chuck Collins ....99 percent of Jack Johnson's fights are not on film. 95 percent of those fighters he fought were the best black fighters around. And Jack won most of those in the 1st 2 rounds. I would bet on a young Jack Johnson over Jack Dempsey easily
+Damani Scott black fighters were no better than the white fighters, especially then when all the fighters were tough...especially them tough Irish and Italian brawlers.
