    I just got one of these for absolutely free. Blown engine was rolled back in the day so it needed some plastics and a rear rack. Came with a plow and it was entirely free. Needs a lot yes but entirely free and with a little effort and some dirt cheap parts itll get back to the point that it can serve me well. Bought a 98 400 parts machine with a good motor for 240$ for an engine to put in it so for a whole 4x4 machine ill be in less than 300 bucks. These old polaris machines are the bomb

    Bought one new had it until traded it in 2011. Just picked up a Kawasaki prairie 700 and it reminds me of it. The solid rear axel I missed. The 400 shined in the tight wooded steep hills, easy to turn. The light weight makes all the difference. The IRS rides nice but the solid rear are fun to steer with your thumb. Awesome video. Thanks for the memories

      Thanks for Watching! the original Prairie 700 was the start of turning points with ATV's in the 2000's that had lots of power and more features! I often look at newer machines, but other then being fairly old and questionable reliability, the old Polaris really rides nicely and handles well even on fairly extreme stuff that I end up taking it on in the mountain foothills!

    I recently found a 1997 polaris sportsman 400 its cosmetics are in great shape guy just put new tires on it. Downside is it needed work like all old 2 strokes. Cleaned and rebuilt carb and still wouldn’t run worth crap. Good compression siting at 123 psi. Which should be plenty I decided to tear down and do seals and gasket’s. I actually ended up pulling the motor out its pretty easy to do. Im replaceing all crank seals waterpump bearing and seal and jug and top head gasket seals just because i want to eliminate problems and its all fairly cheap. I ended up talking the guy down to 700 I thought hey its worth it parts are readily available. New tires and good plastics are worth that alone. Just needed alot of freshening up. 😂 i just hope the bottom end holds up doesn’t feel too bad. Don’t really have funds to dump a crap ton of money into it right now. But hope to get it all back together soon. Its got 5,000 miles on it which i have heard is quite a bit. Its a fun project atv.

      nice job there! Maybe have a quick look in the transmission for chipping on the forward and reverse gears, they are very hard to adjust to work properly (on the same shift fork) I had issues as well with the automatic 4wd hub wiring in the front, well, everything went bad on mine, but they are a really excellent ride quality machine, lots of power, and quite lightweight which really matters on the trail, so all your work should be worth it! thanks for watching!

      Oh and check the oil injection pump, there is a diaphram in there which can tear apparently and then you're pooched. Might be worth considering removing it and switching to pre-mix, mine is jammed on currently or I would have pulled it already.

      @@Kingsoupturbo yes indeed previous owner mixed the gas so I didn’t even want to fool with the oil pump im gonna re seal it to prevent any air leaks from crankcase. I have been told 40:1 is what they ran. Im not sure if 50:1 is too light on oil so i will stick with 40:1 mix

    I know this is an older video but I purchased a 94 400 sportsman and she's a bit of a basket case but runs very well just the electrical is messed up pretty bad. Can't get any power to the dash or controls, can't wait to get it set up properly.

    • @Kingsoupturbo
      @Kingsoupturbo  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey there! Everything runs through the crazy wiring on the left side of the headlight assembly. It really only has I think the 1 fuse and everything is routed in blocks of similar 12v, its totally wierd and unlike more modern stuff. Mine has a few 12v+ that are dead on the power board, once you get the plastics off the front, you'll be able to trace the wires and figure out what isn't supplying power. Look out for vampire splices etc. Mine had a few to try and bypass the rwd speed limiter and 4wd lock from the transmission shift lever. The only real issue is the transmission lever is tough to setup just right, if yours works easily H\L\R then really anything else you have to fix is no problem! mine also since needed new brake lines as the rubber ones kept collapsing and locking up the calipers. They're a great machine, just need proper maintain and staying on top of it all.

      @Kingsoupturbo  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@dscanadianoutdoors3257 You'll find it! its just a whole lot of places for 12+ to plug into, like a power bar really, it looks crazy though right? like did they really design this from the factory like this? The Sportsman imho is the best looking color scheme of this era, they really are comparable to any mid size ATV of the modern era IMHO, just need to replace the parts it needs to be reliable, check your chain tension as well, all of them. Its not too hard to do, but is very important, and make sure they are all lubed. You can buy stainless steel front brake lines now on Ebay for not much money, if you have the whole front end apart, might be a good time to do them if they're original, my front right caliper kept locking up, now my rear caliper is. Anywho, if you have any Q's let me know! not much I haven't done on this machine at this point! happy riding!

    I have a 94 Polaris Sportsman 400 4x4 Anniversary Edition (not sure what the difference is) that I just replaced the starter on. It was buried under the engine and had to take apart both sides just to get to it but it's still a great machine with push button all wheel drive and a low gear (L) position besides H, N and R on the shifter. It can still burn the rear tires pretty easily...

    • @Kingsoupturbo
      @Kingsoupturbo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nice!! oh yes the starter is a real pain! had to make a tool to pull the primary clutch, and its nicely placed right under the engine to catch water! apparently if you put a bit shorter bolts on the starter you can reach them without taking off the clutch for next time. Its quite a task! Apparently with just a pipe they can 10hp + and a bit of clutching, a fast machine, its pretty good totally stock though! Thanks for watching!

      Wow nice job!! not many people are commited to change the motor on the old Polaris! Its a real sweetheart of a machine if you can stay on top of the repairs! I'd say with 48hp from the Rotax, should be really close with the Can Am. The cost is low, but the riding satisfaction is so high! easy to change clutching to make it more sporty as well for cheap if you find the CVT action a bit uninspiring! I've never ridden a Can am, but they sure look nice on paper!

      @@Mikkel584 18! wow that is old to drive a car, I wish I could drive mine on the roads, they can't be legal here in Canada though. I sure do still have it, I got my hands on a performance pipe, installing that right now in fact and rejetting the carb, fixing the front axle 4wd engagement wires (2 per side, they end up cracking) new brake lines as well, the right one was plugged up and kept jamming the caliper on. Where are you located at you can drive ATV on the street? awesome! They're pretty reliable, I've had mine going mmmm 90kph before, not bad! Are you putting more street oriented tires on it?

      @Kingsoupturbo  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Mikkel584 thats right! I've seen videos on the 40kph limited little cars out there, I'm sure you'll be fine! just be careful with braking, the brakes are ok for off road, but give yourself some extra room for slowing down on paved roads, they're pretty good for an ATV with a combination brake, have to pull that lever pretty hard when descending steep mountains here in Calgary, but you won't have that. It doesn't smoke blue too much for a 2 stroke, the oil injection is pretty mild compared to a 2 stroke dirt bike. I could certainly make a video when its got the pipe on, supposed to add 10hp, which should make it pretty quick! Thanks for watching, and great job replacing the engine!

    I actually have one of these, I keep having issues with it, I do like it. I actually found a 2005 artic cat 500 for sale and I was watching your Review and came across this, in your opinion, should I sell my Polaris and get the artic cat or keep the Polaris and keep putting money into it?

    • @Kingsoupturbo
      @Kingsoupturbo  ปีที่แล้ว

      hey there! thats an interesting decision to make. The arctic cat is a pretty heavy machine, even when I redid mine with bushings and light tires it wasn't nearly as smooth as the polaris is. That being said independent suspension and a smooth 4 stroke is pretty nice to have, a lot easier parts to get on the newer machines as well. The Polaris only real fatal flaw is the transmission, the high
      everse being on the same shift fork is a real issue. If it was me, I'd look for a Brute Force or King Quad\grizzly\ Kodiak over the Arctic cat and the polaris. In fact I would keep using the old Polaris until you can get your paws on one of the Japanese Machines, depending on condition of course. When\if it comes time to replace this thing, those are the machines I'll be looking for (Outlander possibly as well) If I found a deal on a Thundercat 1000 maybe...Truth is the Polaris 400 is really that good of a machine, lightness is huge in ATV's, mmmm triple chains though, there is a reason they went to driveshafts. Finally in my area ATV prices are coming down from the ludicrous highs in Covid as well, maybe for you too! wow this got long, thanks for watching! best of luck with your decision!

    • @lukes8502
      @lukes8502 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Kingsoupturbo hey man, I really appreciate the reply! I ended up going with the cat, had 700 miles on it with 170 hours and the price was right, the Polaris was just having too many issues for me, including the transmission and very irritating stalling issues that weren’t fixed with a carb rebuild, along with other stupid ones like it staying running while everything’s turned off?!?! Would have to kill it with the choke haha. The artic cat also came with a plow so I figured I could make some money plowing this winter with it anyways! Let me know if you have any more tips for the machine as so far I really like it, does seem a bit heavy but overall rides good.

    • @Kingsoupturbo
      @Kingsoupturbo  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lukes8502 Awesome! sounds like a great machine! the Suzuki 500 engine is really strong, I ended up rejetting it with an intake and stock muffler exhaust mod, picks up like 4hp I think? but it feels like a lot more! the front brake lines have a habit of rubbing against the rim and splitting, the entire brake line assembly is 1 piece and expenesive to replace, so be sure to keep them neatly tucked up away from the wheel. Mine came with 27" mud tires on it that ruined the machine, I put 25" Radials on it and it was superior in all aspects and barley less capable off road. There is a poly bushing kit that a guy sells for the 500 as some years the stock ones wear out quickly, it also changes the front castor angle for much lighter steering (especially on diff lock) make sure the wheel bearings\ball joints and tie rods are in good shape. I ended up putting a 4500lb Superwinch on the front, with synthetic rope you can buy online, really nice to have. If you ride a lot of hills and off-cambers like I did, consider a set of lowered shocks\seat from a thundercat. My electrical harness also rubbed through where it passes through the body to the battery, so inspect that area to make sure its not rubbing. Also if mine sat a long while I'd have to manually prime the fuel system by squirting gas into the fuel line by the battery to get it pumping from the tank. Its a great machine, I really liked mine, the Polaris is ancient and has design flaws, enjoy the new machine!!

      @Kingsoupturbo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey there! I ended up pulling the sensor in the radiator and testing it with hot water to be sure sure that it worked (I also wired in a bypass switch) I ended up getting aftermarket, Race Driven struts, they look good quality and I believe they have a Gas Charge (to keep oil from foaming when riding fast) where the stock polaris ones don't have it. I've had a bunch of race driven brake pads too which worked well. The ride quality is the best of any ATV I've ridden, thanks for watching!
