Part 3 of Series
Hello everybody my name is Andy and we are going to see a world's firss, never before seen video of the MV Thomas Aquinas wreck and the impact point. We will explore the area to see how it sank. In certain parts of the video, I will show exactly where I was at during the dive to give you a better reference point.
Please watch the other two parts of this series.

You and your fellow divers are amazing men and woman, brave as hell! I don't mean to sound morbid or disrespectful, but what is the process for removing the deceased, how are they taken to the surface for a proper burial when found? I can not imagine having to do the job you do bringing bodies to the surface, I pray you do not relive these moments but reap the benefits of knowing you are bringing a love one home for their family! It must be a very incredible and emotional feat. You all are amazing people doing what you do! God bless you all and keep you safe! Thank you for your service to mankind.
Hi Greg. After the bodies were retrieved they were taken by the coast guard and brought to a freezer in a near by fish market to be stored. The victims families we’re always in my mind during the dives. I remember in one of my videos I grabbed I think a red bag near the main entrance and looked at the passengers name. I though oh my this must be the bag of one of the victims. Thankfully, when I checked after the dive the owner survived the sinking. There were lots of bags and luggages at the muster areas. Many of the passengers must have brought it with them and left them when abandoning the ship. I’m surprised they were still in the same area despite the ship sinking. Thanks again for watching.
Because of the buoyancy of the bodies, they are released and allowed to ascend to the surface.
@@skeena59 well, they gotta be secured w/rope...or easily lost in open water like that. Sometimes we bag them in the water, or at t he surface so we aren't hauling out an obvious corpse with onlookers....but there are many technkques...many variable
Hi,
I read your comment and I’ve attached a link to another video of these divers. I don’t know if you’ve seen it or not, but you can see with the one victim how he was raised to the surface. To me it’s looks like they’ve attached some sort of buoy, or inflatable device to the body. The video is very respectful of the victims and their families, so although they’re dealing with a deceased person the video is not exploitive. I can’t imagine how difficult this job must’ve been for these divers, and what level of inner strength they must have to be able to even do this. But they did it with much respect and dignity. I think if anything ever defined the term of “labour of love” it’s what these divers did for these victims.

I once worked in a cruise ship and we had safety drills almost every 2 weeks...when I stopped, i came back here in the Philippines and one of my friends invited me to apply for a local ferry... i asked her how General drills went to have an idea of how it was done compared to the ship where i worked before... and what she told me shocked me.. apparently some key officers go down for shoreleave even though there was an ongoing general drill...
Another time, i was onboard a local ferry and about the time of departure, i kept hearing squeaking noises. Usually when the ship departs, the Captain or some official would announce that the ship is departing... but i didn't hear any of that... just squeaking and some more squeaking... i kept looking at my watch and asked a fellow passenger what time we were to depart and she said, we already departed... and i asked why there was no announcement... she said there was but the PA System was apparently faulty... She was a native of the island which i visited and a regular passenger of the ship... for her to know that it was faulty told me a bit of how that has been faulty for quite awhile...
I just think that these "little faults" or if i may say negligence causes unnecessary loss of lives... i hope shipping companies try to be stricter in terms of safety...
In an environment where anything could happen, Drills and correct safety practices matter a great deal because it eliminates panic. If people know what to do, it would become routine for them if a true emergency arises... Equipments and communication systems should also be inspected every time the ship sails.
Me and my wife go on cruises a lot ourselves, I told her if we ever hear any noises that don't sound right we're going straight to the deck with jackets out..

The corporation owner doesn’t care. And the officials who monitors these shipping companies are getting paid for their signatures. The government officials get paid too. There are laws, policy and procedures. Just everybody is paid to not follow them.
@@aaronshoyt the water is often a death sentence...even with a PFD. ALWAYS KNOW THE FASTEST WAY TO EACH SIDE BECAUSE YOU GOTTA GET IN A LIFEBOAT TO SJRVIVE.
Cruise ships are a future disaster...Sadly I predict w will collide in the Ocean or one go down trying to get survivors from another somewhere rescue is hours away.
There are just too many people that control your Fate on cruise ships for me to ever feel comfortable on one..I would rather be sailing the high seas in my sailboat and in control of my Destiny with preparation, seamanship, and patience to wait for good weather than be placed jn a potential Battle Royale of 3000 passengers and 800 crew

Being buried at sea is universally accepted, but I belive that it is very hard for family members not being able to bury their dead and go through the rituals of their beliefs saying their last goodbyes. For me that example showed that never write anyone totally off, if a rescue can be safely attempted preferably by people who have the training and skill to do so- then try, cause you just never know who might still be alive, I know though that sadly at times- its just not possible to even attempt a rescue and one can make their peace with that as rescuers have to be so careful because they know a lot of cases exist where other rescuers have lost their own lives trying to save others.
My deepest respect for you brave men and women to dive the wreck and look for bodies. Thank you for finding who you could and returning them to their families. You are all Hero's xx
Watched all of them. Thank you for sharing your experience on this dive. Have lots of respect for what you and the others did. Diving can be fun but also dangerous. I had to quit because of sinus problems. This reminds me of David Shaw. Poor guy died trying to retrieve someone's body. God Bless you guys!
Without people like these guys performing this harrowing job, families would never get their loved ones back. Their efforts are truly remarkable.

Perhaps I don’t know what happened but as a watch keeper on the bridge of a vessel you only have one job to do and a mass of clever equipment to help you do it. For the love of god just do the job like a professional please. In this day and age it should be entirely impossible for two ships of these dimensions to collide.

This was COMPLETELY unavoidable!! I just learned what happened. How on God's green earth, do a Ferry & a hummungous Cargo ship "collide"?!?!🤬 Were BOTH captains drunk or asleep?!?! My prayers go out to those who lost their lives & to those divers who participated in recovering the bodies, so their loved ones could have some closure 🙏😇

I don’t know if EMDR is a thing in the Philippines but if you or anyone you know is struggling with PTSD try to search a therapist who practices it, it’s the only method which cure PTSD. I went through a year of EMDR therapy myself after going through sexual abuse during years while young and my husband also did a lot of sessions after his return from Middle East (French Military) and it saved us and still help us greatly when we have some difficult periods with our PTSD coming back. Stay strong and take care of yourself, you have a heart of gold and mind of steel to do this job and I send you all of my respect for that. I wish you the best for your future. Thanks again for your hard work.

I heard 21 persons still missing until this year and day and hope that 21 bodies was now retrieved the families of them was now grieving and sad because there family was missing and thank you for efforts and sacrifices of your diver mates and you you risked your life for just an retrieval

It would be awesome if you could make a reconstruction video on how fast it sank because you would think people would get off of the ship in time but in this case it looks like it sank right after it was hit. Much respect to you all, I will not even dive, I will not trust anything but the air I breathe on earth... And no way even if I was a diver I could recover bodies.

I cannot understand how in this time in history vessels like these collide & run aground ! ! Every navigational tool imaginable & communication devices . It's as if they hire idiots to operate these things ! Are the owners & operators ever held accountable ? Imprisoned ?

I’m wondering, what should the freighter have done when it rammed into the Thomas aqianas. Im also wondering why the ship land on its starboard side? Did it turn in the water? I’m not a diver but if I ever was I’d be crying and scared at the same time. U guys were brave and I can’t think of the right words but good job overall. I just feel bad that u couldn’t get all the bodies. I hope something like this never causes this much of a tragedy again
Did you have to have extra weight on your belt when diving in the ocean? I'm assuming you would because of salt water. You guys did a great job with hand signals. Good to see you decompress after the deep dive. There's probably still contaminants coming out of the ship.
Hi. In this case, yes, I myself carried a little extra weight. Not just for the salt water (I’ve only dove in the ocean btw) but if we had to handle something buoyant we don’t want to be floating up without the ability to control it. Thanks for watching
What is the depth of the wreck? Odd that it sank with the wound side up towards the surface. This is one of the best wreck diving films I've ever seen and you deserve praise, not only for the dive and recovery of remains, but for presenting it to adults in the outside world. Thank you.

Wait a minute, I don't get how they are saying that they can't recuse any survivors from that depth if there were any, that's not true at all! The ship is only sitting in 100 ft. of water, and there could be survivors if there was a big enough air pockets for them to breathe! But the problem is that any survivors would have been in water all that time, they would have been without food and water for two weeks, so yes, it's highly unlikely that anyone would have survived, but it's not impossible like they are saying, you'd be surprised what people can do when they have a strong will to survive! I'm a certified Scuba Diver, I was certified back in 1986 by Scuba Schools International through Scuba Hut in Glen Burnie MD, and I've been 100 ft under water. I was sitting on the bottom of a rock quarry at 100 ft, the water was crystal clear, but at that depth the water was cold as hell! Lol

The problem was that any survivor would have been saturated with nitrogen. The only way to extract a survivor without killing them would have been to transfer to a diving bell and decompress over 48 hours. No such equipment available or the divers would be using it. I have worked with Philopine Navy divers. Very professional and fearless.

@@spayce3354 There'san instance of a guy surviving about 3~ days or so around that depth if i remember right. Smaller personal ship that'd capsized and sank bottom up, they found him in the air pocket at the bottom (now top) of the ship.
Absolutely though by a week, they're all dead, let alone two. Unless they have a large pocket, and clean water, and food.
Well, of course too deep and you get the Titanic. Air pockets throughout for hordes of people trapped inside. Annd once it got a certain depth, the ship's stern exploded from the pressure on the air.
To bring up any belongings from those who perished must have felt like a blessing for loved ones…

a tragic that left scars in the hearts of those relatives and friends who were left behind.. i can still recall how sad my brother tell me wat they have seen in the dives theyve made. hence he is part of the navy frogmen based in lapu2x dat time
Can u offer help to us in case we are on a sinking ship. Should we jump ship immediately. Should we go to the top deck?
The best advice is to get your life jacket and follow the instructions of the crew. It is usually not a good idea to leave the ship unless there’s no other option. Unless crew tells you otherwise go to where your assigned muster area is, that may not be the top deck.

Amazing job from all the divers involved. Had one question if anybody could answer to this: Seen the oil leakage at 16:55. Couldn’t the divers stop that leakage considering it was shown quite clearly where the leak was coming from? You could fully see the leak coming out from a particular point of the ship.. again what an extraordinary job from the divers and an extremely daunting job overall. I got shivers watching the whole thing. Oh and the background music 😱

I'm surprised that the divers didn't have much protection from the many, many pieces of rotting tissue floating in the area around the victims bodies. It looks like it must get everywhere on a diver and most of them are so exposed with just the breathing piece in their mouths, most didn't have even gloves or a good snug hood to keep things out of ones hair and away from the face.
I did some research, and with everything presented, the captains of bith ships should be held responsible for thebactions if their respective crews. A loss of life that **should** have been avoided by proper practice and understanding with all officers doing their jobs.
This is beyond selflessness...
So very sad but I have watched 3 of these videos now and don't see any body recoveries. Did you actually find anyone?
They are difficult to see and when they show one they only show it for about one second. If they show these videos they should at least let us get a good look at what we're curious to see. Everything else in the world is on the internet so they should let us see what we are here to see. I find it fascinating, sad, educational, quite thought provoking. I also feel a bittersweet joy and sense of relief for the victims and their loved ones. Thank you to the heroes that undertake these recovery efforts. God bless you all. ❤️

Can a sunken ship be retrieve and repaired to work again?
this ship weighted 11 000 tons FYI, you need 500 biggest carrier helicopters(MI26) in the world to lift this ship up simultaneosly and the answer to your question is a NO.
Yes, many sunken ships have been refloated and repaired. But there are many factors that determine whether it happens, including: how much and what kind of damage the ship has, how deep it is, the currents and traffic in the area, the value of the ship and whats in it, politics, etc. etc.

HAD THE FREIGHTER NOT BACKED OUT LIVES COULD HAVE BEEN SAVED. By backing out it opened up the ship causing even more damage

It would've been better if they brought in a salvage co like smit to raise the entire wreck and recover the oils and such. Plus it would have been safer for the recovery divers removing bodies. but like everything else it comes down to who's going to pay for it. Ironic part is it will have to be removed eventually.
That wreck is potentially dangerous to navigation in cebu waters because of the wreck the top of the sea of the wreck of aquinas was an passage way of ships from the port of cebu and the top of the wreck of aquinas and sea was strictly probhiting the dropping of anchor at that zone near the wreck of aquinas because if you dropped an anchor near or in that wreck its highly chanced that the anchor is will stuck or tied to the wreck its too hard and hazardous to remove and the sinked site of the wreck of mv thomas aquinas was an passage way of the cebu ferries from cebu port and that zone of wreck and sea in the top was dangerous and riskier zone due to the wreck..
