MJF lives his character and makes it so easy to hate him.
But yet, some people like him! As a person who hates heels, i can't deny the fact that MJF is the top heel in wrestling right now!
Just like Ric Flair lived his character during his entire career...I hated (but also respected) him from the time I started watching wrestling in 1975 until his face turn during the twilight of Nitro...after that, like many others, put him on a pedestal during his final run in the WWE (we will not speak of TNA...except for the run with Jay Lethal which was equally funny but also sad in parts)...
I like the guy, reminds me of EC3. Similar gimmicks, but now that EC3 has been ruined by WWE again he'd have to redefine himself.
If you seen Chris Jericho's twitter post, EC3 was in a meeting with Chris Jericho and not for a podcast.

Especially seeing how quick it happened, how Wardlow and the beefy security guy hauled him away and MJF stayed there, how the camera's cut away and didn't focus on it, and considering how much heat MJF had at the time. He was the first real heel turn in AEW and OH BOY did he make it count. That heel turn was also the same night that he got drenched in water/beer from a fan. and this lashing wasn't long after that happened. But yeah, odds are better it was a shoot rather than a work.

What a segment that was. They knocked it out of the park. So many of us weren't sure about this 10 lashes thing, and then they go and deliver one of the most emotional wrestling segments in years.

I met Cody the nicest person you will ever meet he did a charity show in Newport Tennessee and I got hit with cross Rhodes it was one of the best times of my life I was working security and he was heel at the moment we he did (before aew)
To this day still one of AEW best segments. The emotion, the story telling, the face/heel dynamics it all worked

I have always hated the term “fake” when describing wrestling. Yes, of course I am aware that it is scripted for entertainment but there is no way you could fake whipping somebody with a belt like this. I think the thing that was great about this is the fact that Cody is actively crying. Not just being emotional, not covering up his face to act like it, he is actively feeling the pain and not trying to put on a tough face. He's being human and thats whats great about this.
I was at this match in the upper level and could hear the whip like I was right beside him. It was insane!

That’s great storytelling. Cody had said his friends and even his wife abandon him. When he needed them the most they appear and then his wife comes to him that’s a passion play and that makes MJF a no good SOB heel. Cody is the hero everyone can get behind that’s classic wrestling storytelling.

Honestly this isn't my sort of thing, but I like how clear AEW are making it that anything can happen on their show. Unlike other promotions which are like "anything can happen that dosent upset our sponsors/stakeholders"
I realized how different they were when Kenny and Moxley's match happened that was just pure terror. I've never seen anything like that and that is how I knew all bets were off with how intense they will go.

Cody moves an audience to tears. Kenny wraps barbed wire around a broom and sweeps Moxley for laughs. Cody is the best storytelling in professional wrestling. There is no close second.

Then when it comes to entertaining it doesn't include the wrestling part, entertaining includes the laughter, the cries, the music of the competitors. He shouldn't be trying to be like his father, he can keep the name but throw away everything else. Getting hit in the back 10 times is something every wrestler does, where is the risk, where is the consequences, where is the fear? People should be having small heart attacks when he is just about to lose but then he kicks out. Cody can do that but he is too busy with the lie of RESPECT

This is actually good storytelling, it builds MJF as a despicable heel with no empathy and makes you want Cody to give him what he deserves. Cody didn’t say one thing through this entire segment, So he is doing what you said by telling the story through body language and facial expression. Wrestling shouldn’t be about pure fighting in the ring, that’s where NXT is lacking because they have most of the stories progress through wrestling matches. WWE changed the game by making segments a big part of the stories.

Nobody can say that Cody ain't tough. Ten lashes are child's play if compared with wrestling an HIAC match with a torn pec, took the stiffest chair shot to the head in 20 years, went through flaming tables, while we could be a so called "old school style" wrestler. But no. Cody went the extra mile for our entertaining. And even if he never steps foot in an AEW ring, he is surely one of the greatest that Tony Khan ever had.
He’ll be in the Hall of Fame for sure. He left on good terms, it’s the fans who turned on him for no reason

Brandi coming to the ring at the end was the emotional punch this segment needed to carry it from great to instant classic.... unbelievable storytelling last night guys.

This is perfect way to make sure that they don't milk it, the way mjf plays his character the way cody fights on as a hero and his brother is there to cheer him on. And fhe crowd reactions making it even more meaningful. This is the realist entertainment I've seen in a while.

Because they have gimmicks like the Butcher and The Blade and goof balls like Kenny Omega that makes stupid faces and dress up as anime characters. The only big guy they have dresses like a dinosaur and always has 2 midgets that look like high schoolers with him. Outside of MJF, Cody, Jericho, and Page they have nothing. Moxley can’t cut a promo, Hager has yet to have a match and all he does is fix his hair. Guevara has a lot of potential but he’s been underutilized, and the Young Bucks are nothing but high spot artists. It’s not necessarily that people hate the company it’s just that AEW marks think they’re going to revolutionize the business and their weekly show is mediocre at the absolute best. The only people that look forward to it on a weekly basis are people who’s lives revolve around wrestling and video games, and catering to that kind of audience isn’t what got professional wrestling to the level it got to in the mid to late 80s and late 90s. It’s about being able to keep your hardcore fans bought in while being able to get casual fans to want to tune in, and they’re never going to be able to do that with the product they currently have
