Fun way to remember "Light Blue" :
    Light blue = 하늘 색
    "Sky" in Korean is 하늘
So it literally means "sky color" AKA Light blue!~^^

살색 is definitely not a racist color name--it just reflects what Koreans knew as reality when they started to use the term. In that sense it has cultural and historic value, even though today's Koreans may not all have that skin color.
    Over-sensitivity actually perpetuates racism.

In a lot of countries this color is called "skin color", including my own country (pakistan). And I've seen that in america it's referred to as "nude", which will imply the same racism (if we're calling it that). It just comes from a lack of a better, more official name. We should, as one world, come together and name it a non-offensive name lol

3:03 In Hungarian we say "bőrszín", "bőr" meaning 'skin' and "szín" meaning 'color', so it's a literal translation of the Korean word '살색'.

  • @mickenziewilburn334
    @mickenziewilburn334 8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

I think the color was invented and named when the world was still separated by land and oceans and the only people in korea were basically that color. so it wasnt meant nor is it racist. now that the whole world is connected and we all know that there are other people out there with different skin colors, its probably best to rename that color because it is no longer accurate

I think the world would be a great place if trying to find a color name to avoid hurt feelings was the most pressing issue of justice.
Here are some option: sand, sandy, oatmeal, khaki, biscuit, coffee, coffee-colored, café au lait, camel, ecru

I speak *Vietnamese* where, based on your list, we seem to only have 4 colour words in common with Korean :
we also employ *those terms based on Chinese characters* , but either *the pronunciation or the semantics are different.*
We also have the word *based on the Chinese character "色"* , where it is pronounced *"sắc" in Vietnamese* : but for us, it's just the *generic word for colour in general* , and *not the individual hues themselves.* Our word for *"green" is also from "绿" (lục)* , and we have *"青" (xanh)* for the whole *"blue-green" continuum.*
We also share the *words for gold :
金* (Kim) and *silver 银* (ngân) : and these also happen to be my maternal aunts' names!

Growing up we also have a colour called "skin colour", but Korean's is more yellow-ish and ours was more pink-ish. Interesting to notice the colour nuances.
But now it's not called "skin colour" anymore, either "light pink" or "beige".

Which is why Asians are know to be yellow skinned. They are even called that way in the Chinese language. It's the melanin...nothing racist abt it.

Korean Unnie, I like your videos very much. Can you make videos specifically for Chinese learners? I noticed that there are a lot of sino-Korean words which should be very easy for Chinese to learn. But it is difficult to find textbooks that use Hanja.

I don't think it's racists because most Koreans have the same skin color. They were probably just thinking about Koreans when they named it that.

in brazil we also have this issue of "skin color" specially here that we have so many skin tones, this is starting to change with the pencils having it named beige instead and others "skin colors" are being made, which i think is a great advance !

Sometimes in Swedish we call 살색 skin color too. In Swedish that’s hudfärg. But I think it’s mostly used by kids who haven’t really learned about racism yet. Though I think we call 살색 beige most of the time.
