I lived in Rome in the 80's and people working on building sites would also wear these. I guess they're really useful for artisans and people working in all sorts of dirty environments. Thank you for this lovely little video.
We sure did need them Pat. It was part of our apprentice pressman training to learn to make a hat. If we blew a roller and had to climb under the old presses to replace one we got covered in ink. I'm a journeyman Newspaper pressman (35 years) just like my dad was. Sometimes I still make one to wear in the pressroom lol The older reporters, sales reps and mail room people all love it when I do because I think it brings them back to the good old days kinda sorta..................you know what I mean lolThe old 60" (30") web made better hats though lol
I saw on the old happy days tv show with ron howard where ron howard had applied for a news paper job,,,well ron,,,started to come out in different secens with different types of paper hats,,,one was a saliors hat it was round,,another was a tall like witches hat and some others,,,,dont know how to make all the different types of hats that ron came out with in the show does any one remember this,,,I wish there was a video that had ALL of the different types of paper hats that can be made using news paper,,,,but every video is just one paper hat being made I kinda would like to see that eposode of happy days again where ron howard made all those paper hats,,,

Oh for the days of the giant broadsheets like the old Times of London. Most newspapers have switched to Berliner and tabloid formats, more's the pity.

So a real Pressman showed me how to make one from a (Dinky) a 1/2 sheet i could never remember ow to make one. anyone out there know how.?
