    Great advice Tom. For a backyard grower, most of those "blemishes" are very superficial and does not affect the quality of the fruit. Most of those blemishes we just cut out and happily eat the rest of the fruit!

      Christopher, yeah buy mid December we are down to our last variety which is Monroe. During November I still have a mix of Hall, Choquette, and Monroe. If you want a mix next season send me a message and I'll be sure and include a variety for you. thank your for your business.

    Damaged flesh issues I have seen in avocados I bought at the grocery store.
    Blackening.... kinda like a bruise, sometimes it has a off smell and odd texture.
    Corky lumps under the skin... as the skin is peeled, most of these lift away , like those blackhead nose strips... sometimes the pits left behind need to be scraped clean.
    A few times there was rot - bad odor/mushy texture, around the seed.
    I like avocados and don't often bring bad ones home. These where all surprises, which didn't show until the fruit began to soften.
    And once, got some that just shriveled up, without ripening.

    Hi Tom. I’ve been watching for a while now. Do you have a video of tipping your young trees? How tall it should be if grafted, benefits of tipping to not. Not to be scared to make the cut after having it for a while. That would be awesome if you don’t to make one. Great video by the way :) maybe sleepy Lizzard stalking hats in the future?

    The Russell, is Very Bland and watery tasting. Living in Florida I come across it all the time, its the "Floridian kind that does well here". My comments before were " Mysteriously deleted. Which makes me think, because its also the Kind of Avocado THIS GUY is trying to sell at the moment. I believe the truth will set you free, some people like Bland and watery tasting.

      @SleepyLizard  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I went into my notifications and I see a few comments from you but when I click them they are gone so I assumed you deleted them.
      Here's one for example:
      Bluesidian replied: "SleepyLizard Wait, isn't the Russell,the one that a lot of people grow in Florida ? I find that one has a mild taste almost watery. I found the name of the one i like. its the Reed. The reed..."
      and another:
      Bluesidian replied: "SleepyLizard I often come across it , but can never remember the name lol. thanks."
      no clue why those comments aren't showing.

    Hi Tom- Any idea what can cause avocados to go soft while still on the tree? We have had heatwaves of 32 degrees Celsius. Could that be the cause?

    • @SleepyLizard
      @SleepyLizard  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      usually it would mean they been on the tree too long, past their harvest time. Do you know the variety?

  • @theboyspodcast4000

    Hey Tom,
    Do you think the Catalina variety would fruit well in Northern California? I’ve heard it wouldn’t do well but I’d like to get your opinion. & if you were to recommend a Florida variety to grow in CA which one would it be? Other than Monroe (already have that one lol).

    • @SleepyLizard
      @SleepyLizard  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It all depends on your usda hardiness zone. Catalina is not known to be cold hardy so maybe 9b or 10a.

    If an avocado is smaller is it ok to buy it? Its rare that l usually buy good avocado and it ripens nicely. Usually inside goes back . And not at all nice to eat

    • @SleepyLizard
      @SleepyLizard  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Princess, I prefer the bigger ones in the batch. Next time you buy them let them soften on your counter at room temp and as soon as they're soft all the way around it's time to cut them open.

    • @princessaisyah7029
      @princessaisyah7029 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SleepyLizard l do let them ripen by itself. But l put some lemons beside them to quicken the process.

    • @SleepyLizard
      @SleepyLizard  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      try and experiment. do some with the lemons and let others go at their own pace and see which works better. could be quickening the process is causing the insides to go black.

    Hey Tommy, hope all is well. I gave 3 Choquettes to a Jamaican lady I know, and she started talking about foods and fruits from Jamaica. Then she told me about a fruit in Jamaica that looks and taste like scrambled eggs.
    Do you know anything about it? She swears that I won’t know if I’m eating scrambled egg or that fruit. She also thinks it grows in Florida. I tried researching it and all I found is egg fruit but it doesn’t match her description.

    • @SleepyLizard
      @SleepyLizard  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tony, lucky for you I have a few friends from Jamaica who are as passionate about tropical fruit as we are. According to my friend Yvette the name of the fruit you describe is: Ackee.
