I think in a way he sees himself in her. Forced to care for her mother and be the “man” of the house at such a young age. Misguided and irrational because she was never taught how to regulate her emotions, and perhaps she has some angst and anger towards the world. I think next season we will see people realize who they need as student or teacher to continue growing. Kreese/Tory, Daniel/Stingray, Johnny and Robbie chasing after Miguel on that father-son trip they never got only this time it's to potentially save a friend.
I kinda hope Terry doesn't get screwed on this. In that "hey, man. I was at peace then you've brought me back and made me the villain". Probably have Kreese come and try to reconcile with Terry. That way, this doesn't end with a middle finger to Terry.
I thought Silver had changed at first when he was like "naw man, forget the past, focus on the students" at the restaurant after they were at odds, but after it looks not. Then he attacks Lawrence and tell them to raid LaRusso's house?? It was Kreece as shown to actually soften a little to the point where 1st I thought he was full of it, then 2nd later blew my mind! Then I see Silver do what he does, then betraying Kreece as he did??? Wow..! that got me like on a while new level!
Terry did what he did to take over the dogo and because he saw Kreece actually starting to soften a little and it scared him, but with his actions and words kinda did unnerve him a little soon after he came back.
Kreese was the classic "cartoon villain" of the Karate Kid franchise- cold, unforgiving, and ruthless. It worked fine in the 80s but I actually groaned when he made his return at the end of Cobra Kai season 1 because I knew at that point the series would go from morally ambiguous (keep in mind DANIEL was the original antagonist of the series, doing everything he could to stop Johnny from reviving the school, though his reason was valid.) to straight up good guy/bad guy morality like was shown in the 80s. You KNEW Kreese was going to manipulate Johnny and take over the school, and his harsh treatment of the students and how toxic his philosophies were was the reason I consider Season 3 the weakest season of the series. But adding Terry to the picture in season 4 and giving Kreese a backstory, the character FINALLY evolved. He was still a villain, but he began to sympathize a lot more with his students, and the advice to Tori about fighting her own way really struck a chord with me. You could say Terry brought out the best in Kreese, while Kreese brought out the worst in Terry, due to Terry framing Kreese and taking over the dojo himself. Kreese's verbal abuse of Terry throughout the first two thirds of Season 4 kind of made this betrayal obvious, but due to the softening of his villainous character and how his philosophy clashed with Terry's (Kreese- only the strongest survives. Might makes right. Terry- Winning is the only important thing. The means don't matter as long as you win.) I actually have sympathy toward the main villain of the Karate Kid franchise, something I thought I'd NEVER have.
@@burmiester1 Kreese was given a backstory but the still had him act like a supervillain most of the season. Season 3 did have a lot of high points (Hawk realizing the error of his ways in the middle of the house fight is what I liked most about the season), but the moral ambiguity of whose philosophy was "right" was gone and it was straight up good (Daniel, Johnny, and their students) vs evil (Cobra Kai.). I liked the first season so much because Daniel was the antagonist but not the villain; he tried everything to stop Johnny, but his reasons were valid- he was afraid Cobra Kai's philosophies would turn the kids into monster bullies. And he was RIGHT! Season 4 held that the core philosophies of Kreese, Johnny, AND Daniel are wrong and the students need to figure out a mesh between the three. That's why I believe season 4 was better than 3.
@@vampman87 I believe each season has gotten better honestly. So while I agree that 4 is better than 3, I think 3 is better than 1. I believe 3 is better because it was a lot more ambitious of a season with far more character development and complexity than just a continuation of the Johnny and Daniel rivalry and it’s effects on a new generation. While you have some interesting points about moral ambiguity and such, I’ll just point out two things: 1. Many fantastic tv shows and movies have been made with clear black and white characters and philosophies and 2. There were important characters in season 1 that were clearly 1 way, and not grey. For example, Kyler had no ambiguity in him. Yasmine had no ambiguity in her. They were important characters, yet were completely black in season 1. I appreciate your points, I just can’t see how the first season is the best season. It’s a great start, but like most great tv shows, future seasons take that greatness and step it up even more.
I couldn’t wait for this video! John Kreese is one of my favorite villains of all time. He’s definitely one of the best! He’s like the Darth Vader of Cobra Kai!
Some fans even considers him to be the emperor Palpatine of Karate Kid/Cobra Kai series. Since he corrupted Johnny, turning him into a ruthless, aggressive bully and years later corrupted Hawk by using his anger for the latter's defeat by the Miyagi-Do students and his recent breakup with Moon. Of course that could also be Captain Turner; Kreese's former command officer from his days during the Vietnam war, since he corrupted Kreese by instilling his ruthless, merciless teachings onto him and using the death of Kreese's girlfriend Betsy to try to break Kreese. And Kreese became the monster he is today.
@@dragonfire4527 true. But when I said “Darth Vader” I meant a Darth Vader level villain. A really awesome villain. I think he’s like like Sidious in Cobra Kai season 3. And Robby is Anakin (hell, Tanner Buchanan looks like a younger version of Hayden Christiansen) and Johnny and Daniel are Obi Wan.
I like his character change! Without going to much into detail, but there is some thought i have a longer time, even if its only a thought and can be completely wrong. Remember how much the death of Betsy hurt him. Maybe this was the start of everything. Here is my thought, like i said only a thought. Since there are so many theories about Barnes being her dad or Julie her mother: I have an other idea (only idea): Tory could be his granddaughter. Remember Kreese s girlfriend Betsy (like Tory ends with an Y) died in a car crash. Maybe she was pregnant from Kreese, but never told him since he had to go to Vietnam. She was pregnant with twin sisters, Tory s mother and aunt. Those two babies were saved in the belly of their death mother, and maybe her mom is disabled because she was cut out of Betsys belly. That landlord even asked Kreese if he was Tory s grandfather or something. It is a mystery why her mother was never shown yet...and Kreese almost saw her when he stood in the door. Kreese indeed seems to see something of himself in Tory...maybe because she is his granddaughter without knowing it. Kreese only cares about three people, Johnny who was like a son for him, Robby because he is Johnny s son, and Tory. And now it seems Tory and Robby are a couple...Kreese would love that i am sure.
Interesting.....I think creese dies in combat in season finale after saving Johnny from some drug dealers or something.....I like the idea of the grandfather of tory I could see that
Thanks! Of course its only a thought and can be wrong. Lets see if Torys aunt Kandace and her mother are twins and look exactly the same. Then it could be true. It would at least explain why we havent seen the face of Torys mom yet, because if she looked exactly like her sister Kandace, the audience would have known already they are twins.
Kreese actually parallels Sam a lot this season. Kreese and Sam both grow by the end of the season and end up incorporating what they were reluctant to learn earlier in the season. Both of them "do the right thing" during the fight but end up getting the short end of the stick thanks to Silver. Sam loses the fight and Kreese is arrested.
hey something i feel like is worth talking about is how good the scene where miguel pulled his leg. That scene in my opinion is the best out of all of cobra kai because of how well it was made the music and the intensity were amazing. I also love how it shows how much miguel cares for johnny despite what he did the night before
I wouldn't say he is an anti-hero yet. His backstory is tragic indeed and helping Kory show some good side in him, but this dude is willing to kill Johnny twice and Daniel, stole John entire career without mercy. Even though Terry beating Johnny is nothing comparable to his fight with John, but seeing Johnny beating up, make him rethink his life decision.
Imagine Kreese save’s Johnny’s life and he ends up fighting Silver. This leads to Kreese getting the advantage over Silver who’s hanging peerlessly from a ledge shadowing his fight with Captain Turner. Kreese finally show’s mercy which as a result Kreese falls victim to Silver’s betrayal and Johnny witnesses this as he is recovering. This would lead to Johnny and Silver fighting to the death with Johnny winning after a hard battle and comforting his dying Sensei with sentimental words bringing Kreese ‘s arc full circle with the final scene being young Kreese meeting Betsy on the other side as Kreese passes away.
This is easily the very best breakdown of Kreese that I’ve ever seen. Your video should be the Rosetta Stone on Kreese’s life and intentions. Spectacular!
Kind of hard to compare the two. One of the pairs were in the army together and used the other guy’s girlfriends death as leverage to motivate him. The other pair are a bunch of high school students fighting over a girl. Lol
@@followthemusic01 I just mean the scene in general, not necessarily the characters. I think the biggest difference is that where Miguel showed mercy, Kreese committed to mercilessness.
Kreese threw his captain into the snake pit on purpose, it was done with intent, he wanted to kill his Captain. Robby on the other hand didn't mean to throw Miguel over the rail, it was an accident.
The main thing I wanted to see in season 4 more than anything (even Silver) was some kind of redemption for Kreese. I am so glad we got it and I think he will further redeem himself and Daniel and Johnny will help him.
No. Kreese wanted to kill both Johnny and Daniel. Kreese was the one that called Silver and guilt-tripped him to fight his own battles. "Better man" my arse.
@@hectorbarbossa4403 Silver was fine living his own life until John Kreese manipulated him so he can help him defeat Daniel and Johnny. And do you really believe Kreese, the one that faked his own death twice, took Cobra Kai from Johnny, repeatedly insults Mr. Miyagi in Daniel's face, intended to choke Johnny to death and attempted to kill Daniel? John Kreese is a master manipulator that sweet-talks to others into believing his own version of the facts (remember how he convinced "Councilperson" Roberts?) and incites Cobra Kai students to fight his own battles (trashing Miyagi-Do, assaulting the students bat the LaRusso residence). The only way Chozen should be helping Kreese is by finishing him, as Daniel intended at the end of season three.
@@iloveutubesince3207 yeah Sure defend silver just because he didnt do shit for some years does not erase what he did before and after At least Kreese had some good Deeds
This was a really good analysis of John kreese's character it got me to consider things about him i hadn't before and I think that's what a good character analysis does
The greatest evil comes from the best intentions. Kreese certainly meant well with everything in the movies, but his methods were different. Kreese, in my opinion, represents the consequences of war as well as what happens when the wrong way of doing things is perpetuated. Season 5, I think, sees his Redemption, though maybe not fully. I think he helps Johnny and Daniel through Tory. Johnny may be with Miguel and Robby at first, but Kreese finds a way to help.
I can't help but feel bad for Kreese. He may be a ruthless psychopath, but he has a good side deep down, like when he treated Johnny Lawrence like a son, and helped Tory with her home life situations. He was also framed by his best friend whom he's known for over 50 years, and he was his only friend.
As soon as they showed his sympathetic backstory and teased Terry Silver I knew they were setting him up for a redemption arc. I can't wait to see it, they've done a great job with his character.
I think we could see a redemption arc for Kreese. One way to redeem a villain is to bring in another villain who is more ruthless and unhinged, which would be Terry Silver. Kreese is ruthless, but conflicted and does what he needs to to survive. Silver on the other hand, went all in to the dark side.
To me John Kreese is my favorite character. I love Kreese and he will be redeemed. This show is so nuanced. Kreese isn't a bad guy. He is a hero in his own story. BTW I appreciate the product placement at the end of the video not in the middle. That is just obnoxious! Great video. Kreese is my favorite character.
Amazing video! This video only made me love Kreese even more, he's done some awful things but it's clear he's a good person deep down and his character arc in season 4 was one of the best, he's one of the best characters because he's so interesting - he has so much depth to him, I cannot wait to see what direction they take him in season 5, I agree with you to some extent that Tory could help him get out of jail but I don't feel she has the authority nor the power to do so, I can see her enlisting the help of Johnny or even Amanda/Daniel to help get him out!
Early on kreeses story is really quite similar to daniels the fact they both are somewhat made fun of by Johnny/David then they beat them up and take their girlfriend I just thought it was ironic how to mortal enemies are surprisingly similar
Kreese weakness in Daniel family use Samantha LaRusso (daughter) Anthony LaRusso (son) in cobra Kai train them more dangerous against their father Daniel
I’m glad that Cobra Kai gives us a fuller scope on John Kreese because I really never looked at him as a villain! He was trained to survive and do whatever it took to win! John Kreese was my favorite character! STRIKE FIRST STRIKE HARD NO MERCY!!!🥋🐍🏆
Kreese probably had the best character development in Cobra Kai next to Tory. It was pretty cool to see that Kreese wasn't all villain. He didn't show it a lot but he had a heart.
Gee I don't know, maybe because he choked a teenage Johnny after he got a second place in 1984? And intended to choke Johnny to death again as an adult and attempted to kill Daniel at the end of season 3? Don't forget that he later calls his pal Terry Silver and guilt-trips him to fight his own battles, and gets surprised when Terry takes the dojo in the same way Kreese took the dojo from Johnny at the end of season 2. Funny that everyone jumps in the "not bad just misunderstood" bandwagon when everyone wanted Kreese to die at the end of third season.
@@iloveutubesince3207 thank you for being a voice of reason. I don't have a problem for Kreese to have redemption, but people watched him do one or two good things and he's already a misunderstood anti hero 😂😂
@@iloveutubesince3207 nah bro, its not a rationalization its just from my own experience, my parent did that to me they used to throw me to pond at night when i make a problem in elementary, i endure a lot from my parent when i was a kid, they even get mad when my rank go from 2 to 4 at the class. Now i walk with my own feet doing what best for and they regret all of that, and said that back then they dont want me to waste my potential. I hate my experiences but i understand it, they got good intention but with a terrible execution
The thing is Miyagi and Kreese are similar. Both are soldiers who returned from the war to find their loves dead. But they get differing philosophies likely due to how they were received when they returned
Kreese is not a villain basically he’s misunderstood very vulnerable and very unstable but then in season 4 he started changing and having sympathy for others which is actually very nice he’s trying to change and to be better person look we all do bad things but it’s better to change and start feeling bad for others I’m going to admit I like Kreese in season 4 he definitely became a sweet guy!
@@iloveutubesince3207 I mean in the 1965 flashback which is the youngest we saw him in the time line. If they show him again in say the 50s played by an even younger actor he will probably be wearing a white Tshirt.
Actually now that they gave him more information for his lore I respect him a lot more I think he was misguided and misunderstood I'm his wife died in a car accident and then his stupid commander didn't even tell him about it until later actually to be honest with you I was kind of disappointed with Johnny and Louisa for not getting the lawyer I think if they gave him a chance by giving the lawyer he'd change but then I know that we need it we still need a bad guy for the series so I'm not complaining really Peace and have a wonderful day or night wherever you are
I really want Martin Kove to be in season 5 and seasons past that he was just such a good actor and it was great to see him in the show and he was the first actual villain character in the show
Amazing video you could probably do psychoanalysis video on kreese character and se how much his ptsd has influenced his character since karate kid until cobra Kai
I don’t think the problem with Kreese getting betrayed by Silver was that he “let his guard down” which left him “vulnerable,” though that very well could be how Kreese is processing it still, given his “no mercy” philosophy. I think it may take some time for Kreese to fully deconstruct his “no mercy” philosophy he has ingrained in himself for basically five decades now. Even now with his position in jail. I think he may at first think the problem was that he “let his guard down” with Terry and therefore didn’t see him coming, but I think if he runs into Dutch in prison and gets therapy while there, he may realize that the toxic culture of “no mercy” is what led Terry to betray him in the first place.
It's great being able to see Kreese in a different light. Nevertheless, you're painting him in a brighter light that it is _ his relationship with Johny and Silver is run by his attempts to manipulate them. But he gets beaten at it by Silver.
I Feel like, if they continue with this three teams angle, will end up as Chozen and Laruso, Silver and Mike Barnes, and Johnny and Kreese, since Kreese is definitly seeing the error of his ways now.
After watching season 5 I forgot how Terry had tried to change. For a while it appears that he did before Kreese entered his life again. Although I wonder if it was just an act.
In season 3 and 4 is where there is more detail and background on John Kreese, how he was a good man, who went down the wrong path, then in the 4th season, he was gradually showing more sympathy. He was a father figure to Robby and Tory, although Terry Silver was the Sugar Daddy to them, Kreese showed that he cared for his heart instead of the size of his wallet.
The only way John Kreese could be redeemed is by dying. Otherwise it is just a cheap attempt of redemption as a way to say "see, he is not a bad guy tee hee!"

Season 3 is the weakest? What are you on crack? Kreese was humanized big time in season 3 with his backstory
@@burmiester1 this person is talking about season 3 in general not kreese in season 3
@@vampman87
I believe each season has gotten better honestly.
You and me both
Martin Kove is a great actor I really like how he plays Kreese
@@epicc1o1official true yeah fans have stated that Robby has gone to the dark side since he joined Cobra Kai in season 3.
@@dragonfire4527 he was on the Dark Side in s3 and 4 but he’s back to the light
That’s a really good theory
Interesting.....I think creese dies in combat in season finale after saving Johnny from some drug dealers or something.....I like the idea of the grandfather of tory I could see that
Real cool theory dude,
Julie is not her Mother, her Mother is bed ridden and dying of Cancer !!!!!!!
I met martin kove when i was 10 during the filming of a movie called gentle ben he was in, it was filmed in this little town where we have a cabin in
Dude I just saw the face of Kreese stopping Terry, the genuine fear that he has knowing how unhinged Terry is.
No comparison. She's sheltered and spoiled. Kreece went through Hell as well as bullying and lots of a loved one: dad mother betsy...
I didn’t realize just how closely the young actor resembles Kove
Good casting right
I didnt even notice his actual son in the flashback bc the actor looked so similar.
@@chuuu4610 His son looks like a brawny ass Captain America type, definitely got his dad's genetics lol.
And also suprisingly the son of KOve is bully the father young version actor. It is like "only my son can bully my young version"
hey something i feel like is worth talking about is how good the scene where miguel pulled his leg. That scene in my opinion is the best out of all of cobra kai because of how well it was made the music and the intensity were amazing. I also love how it shows how much miguel cares for johnny despite what he did the night before
Young Kreese: we loved him
KK1, KK2, KK3 Kreese: we hated him
Cobra Kai S4 Kreese: we felt bad or still hated on him.
Maybe Kreese wanted to be the one beating Johnny instead.
@@iloveutubesince3207
I think Tory herself is the one causing Kreese to change considering much of her situation mirrors his when he was young.
I understand his past and issues but it does not excuse him from putting all that army bullshit into kids minds

Cool!👍🏽 I wish he was my Sensai when I grew up! STRIKE FIRST STRIKE HARD NO MERCY!!!🥋🐍✊🏽🦶🏽🏆
Barret was such a good choice for young Kreese. He nails it.
Definitely 💯
I think that Robbie throwing Miguel over the rail was a parallel to Kreese throwing his captain into the snake pit. This show is so well written!
@@followthemusic01 Yeah Robie freaked out after what happened, Kreese had every intention to let Turner die.
Kreese threw his captain into the snake pit on purpose, it was done with intent, he wanted to kill his Captain. Robby on the other hand didn't mean to throw Miguel over the rail, it was an accident.
@@MicukoFelton I mean, they both acted on anger. I do agree that Robbie didn't intend to seriously injure Miguel though.
The main thing I wanted to see in season 4 more than anything (even Silver) was some kind of redemption for Kreese. I am so glad we got it and I think he will further redeem himself and Daniel and Johnny will help him.
Man, awesome connections you made all throughout this video! All these other Cobra Kai analysis channels lacking, for real.
Great summary, compilation, and analysis.
Perhaps Kreese can become a better man through chozens help and having a common enemy with Johnny, Daniel and Chozen in Silver
No. Kreese wanted to kill both Johnny and Daniel. Kreese was the one that called Silver and guilt-tripped him to fight his own battles. "Better man" my arse.
@@iloveutubesince3207 Silver is miles worse than Kreese evee was
@@hectorbarbossa4403 Silver was fine living his own life until John Kreese manipulated him so he can help him defeat Daniel and Johnny.
@@iloveutubesince3207 yeah Sure defend silver just because he didnt do shit for some years does not erase what he did before and after
At least Kreese had some good Deeds
This was a really good analysis of John kreese's character it got me to consider things about him i hadn't before and I think that's what a good character analysis does
Yes been waiting for a kreese vid
I honestly don't think Kreese is that evil... :(
I really love your videos keep it up
His face is priceless when he tries to scare Daniel
The greatest evil comes from the best intentions. Kreese certainly meant well with everything in the movies, but his methods were different. Kreese, in my opinion, represents the consequences of war as well as what happens when the wrong way of doing things is perpetuated. Season 5, I think, sees his Redemption, though maybe not fully. I think he helps Johnny and Daniel through Tory. Johnny may be with Miguel and Robby at first, but Kreese finds a way to help.
That’s cool Pascal, I like hardworking TH-camrs working together lifting each other up👍
I'm glad I wasn't the only one who picked up on this. Surely Season 5 of Cobra Kai will have some kind of Redemption Arc
I can't help but feel bad for Kreese. He may be a ruthless psychopath, but he has a good side deep down, like when he treated Johnny Lawrence like a son, and helped Tory with her home life situations. He was also framed by his best friend whom he's known for over 50 years, and he was his only friend.
Thank you for making this video
As soon as they showed his sympathetic backstory and teased Terry Silver I knew they were setting him up for a redemption arc. I can't wait to see it, they've done a great job with his character.
I never realized how well they nailed the resemblance of his younger self
Kreese is the Lionel Luthor of Karate Kid/Cobra Kai. You can never tell if he's had a change of heart or not
Love your videos man😊
I think we could see a redemption arc for Kreese. One way to redeem a villain is to bring in another villain who is more ruthless and unhinged, which would be Terry Silver. Kreese is ruthless, but conflicted and does what he needs to to survive. Silver on the other hand, went all in to the dark side.
If your goal of the year is to do a review on every main character in cobra kai/karate kid movies, then I respect that
Another great video
To me John Kreese is my favorite character. I love Kreese and he will be redeemed. This show is so nuanced. Kreese isn't a bad guy. He is a hero in his own story. BTW I appreciate the product placement at the end of the video not in the middle. That is just obnoxious! Great video. Kreese is my favorite character.
24:45 i really hope kreese will be in s6 and beyond
do not forget he is a war hero. he saved all those POW.
Martin Love is so great, truly an amazing actor.
Early on kreeses story is really quite similar to daniels the fact they both are somewhat made fun of by Johnny/David then they beat them up and take their girlfriend I just thought it was ironic how to mortal enemies are surprisingly similar
This series is so epic.
Every character is perfect.
Kreese weakness in Daniel family use Samantha LaRusso (daughter) Anthony LaRusso (son) in cobra Kai train them more dangerous against their father Daniel
Your videos always make my day man, keep up the awesome content! :D
"In the event Terry Silver takes your dojo from you"
Kreese was angry when his star pupil took second place. This is probably because Kreese is still sore about America loosing in Vietnam.
He s an amazing character,I don t get the hate for him
because he's the villain and I ask most people about Cobra Kai and they hate Kreese
Did you see what he did to Silver? He caused all of the drama. He was foul towards Silver
He used past events to guilt trip Terry for years, but still, I’m convinced Terry is mentally ill, and he’s on coke xd
“There are two types of people in this world, those that get angry or those that get sad and that will forever affect their life
Kreese is definitely the most interesting character in Cobra Kai.
“Now who’s the loser?” Kreese asked calmly
In Cobra Kai I always think that Kreese care about Johnny like a father to a son... like a highly strict asian father....
Nice racionalization of an abusive behavior. You might as well claim that Kreese choking Johnny is his special hug.
If Kreese had known when to walk away from Cobra Kai all together, then Silver never would've framed Kreese for aggravated assault.
The thing is Miyagi and Kreese are similar. Both are soldiers who returned from the war to find their loves dead. But they get differing philosophies likely due to how they were received when they returned
I didn't like him in the movies but he became my favorite character in the TV show
All I know is Martin Kove is freakin awesome.
Kreese is court ordered into therapy in exchange for early parole, comes out to join myagi do
JK that would be funny as fuck though
Im really looking forward to Kreese's growth in the series.
Kreese is the Anakin Skywalker of Cobra Kai. What was he wearing when we first saw him? All white. The color of goodness. He will be redeemed.
I think Robbie fits Anakin Skywalker more than Kreese
Kreese: Palpatine
Miyagi: Yoda
Silver: Maul
Barnes: Grievous
Julie: Leia
Daniel: Obi Wan
Johnny: Anakin
Robby: Luke
Miguel: Ahsoka
Hawk: Ben
Samantha: Rey
Get your eyes checked, because every first appearance of John Kreese shows him wearing dark clothes.
@@iloveutubesince3207 I mean in the 1965 flashback which is the youngest we saw him in the time line. If they show him again in say the 50s played by an even younger actor he will probably be wearing a white Tshirt.

The first scene of the Young Kreese episode totally fooled me.
Loved what they did for kreese during the all valley finals
In season 3 and 4 is where there is more detail and background on John Kreese, how he was a good man, who went down the wrong path, then in the 4th season, he was gradually showing more sympathy. He was a father figure to Robby and Tory, although Terry Silver was the Sugar Daddy to them, Kreese showed that he cared for his heart instead of the size of his wallet.
