In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm listening to music from British prog band Threshold for the first time. This suggestion comes to us from today's Guest DJ Alastair, and I was quite impressed with this band's sound. This is one of the reasons why I love these Guest DJ episodes...this band wasn't on my radar, but now they are! I hope you enjoy!

Such a criminally underrated band, hopefully they’ll get a few more fans and recognition from this video once it’s out in the world
count me in
This is so freaking right mate!
I hope so too. I"m a fan sinds m first heard "Clone" in 1998. Great band.
@@LittlePapaJohnMe too. Became my favourite band from Hypothetical onward.
Threshold is so criminally underrated. They also deliver amazing albums. "Pilot In The Sky Of Dreams" is a must, but it's hard to go wrong with anything they've released.
Never heard of them before, just bought that album to hear more. Nice find.
So so cool that you’re doing this. I’ve known the guys in Threshold for years and I’ve always thought they never got the level of recognition that they deserve. Legend of the Shires is a fabulous album amongst a discography full of some amazing output - Subsurface, Hypothetical and Dead Reckoning are still firm favourites after all these years. Not many prog metal bands get their level of balance virtuosity but constantly in the service of harmony and melody. And the quality of songwriting is always impeccable. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts.
Can’t wait for this. I firmly believe the Legends of the Shires album is one of the top 2 or 3 prog albums in the last 20 years. Phenomenal from start to finish.
I absolutely agree with your views on Legends of the Shires, it’s amazing.
First class
This Band is pure joy.
Rip Andrew Mc Dermott 🌹
Someone finally reacts to this great, overlooked and underrated band!! Can't wait!
Respect to you man, I wanted to say something similar. Huge fan of the band.
I knew you would enjoy this harmonical tour de force. "They are all over the place" was definitely a comment I was expecting from you...
Personally, with Threshold, I have one of my fondest memories of any concert I ever attended. During the Hamburg show of the "Clone" tour, the late and great Andrew "Mac" McDermott noticed myself and another guy singing along every line of almost every song. So he pulled us onto the stage, handed us the microphone and jumped into the crowd, having us sing the final chorus of "Angels".
Only shouting "That's Rock'n'Roll!", when he returned.
That's awesome! Threshold is one of my all-time favorite bands. Getting to see them live with Mac would have been spectacular. You had a truly special experience there, man. I'm envious.
Such an underrated band. Been a fan of theirs since stumbling upon Critical Mass in the early 2000's. They have never disappointed me with any album they have come out with at all.
That was my first album too, then got Hypothetical, brilliant band.
Got into this prog metal group in 6th grade and now 17 still blown away by their musicianship absolute legends
The words in the beginning and the end of the track are the days of the week.
Threshold is amazing. Such a great catalogue. Doug needs to react to many more by them.
Finally Threshold. Absolute great Choice. Hope you do more of this wonderful Band
Doug, I'm a newcomer to your channel and I was brought here for your reaction to Threshold, one of my absolute favorite bands of all time. I really appreciated your understanding and analysis of music and it's composure. Not just musically, but equally lyrically, Threshold is one truly amazing band.
I wish I had a better education of music because it's so transcendently spiritual for all of us, especially when you have the tools to disect it and find deeper meaning in it.
There are a lot of people that do music reaction videos who should not be doing music reaction videos. You won my subscription with this one.
To quote the man himself, "This is rad!" Glad you found the channel. Doug is great at what he does. I've been introduced to some great music through his channel as well as enjoying reactions to the music I already know. The community that follow his channel is great too. It was great to be able to give back a little and introduce Doug (and those not familiar with Threshold) to this great band.
So glad you've discovered Threshold, Doug. They've been consistently great for 30 years and have had 3 excellent singers: Glyn Morgan, who is singing here, Damian Wilson who was with them 3 different times, and the incomparable Andrew "Mac" McDermott, whom you really must hear. Either "Pilot in the Sky of Dreams" or "The Ravages of Time" may be a good next choice for a reaction. There's a lot to love with Threshold!
Mac rip 😕
Incomparable is right. Mac was phenomenal.
Finally. One of my favourite reactors finds one of the best British Prog Metal Bands. Not much Threshold reactions around on YT. And certainly none with so much expertise. Thanks for that, Doug.
Just one request if you continue to explore this band: Try "That's Why We Came" from the 2012 album "March of Progress" or "Siren Sky" from their 2014 release "For the Journey". Both albums feature Damian Wilson on vocals, imho one of the best singers around, also known for his work with Ayreon.
I love "That's Why we came"
Such a underated song, such a powerfull vocals by Damian.
Funny this video popped up as I will be seeing Treshold again next weekend. Saw them on many occasions and they never disappoint. Have almost all their albums on vinyl. Amazing! Check out other music like Pilot in the sky of dreams, Fragmented or any others songs by them!
Never heard of them but i will listen to them some more thanks for your show
Nobody is mentioning Threshold's newest album Dividing Lines, it's a great album too and was described by the band as the darker, moodier brother of Legends of the Shires.
Yes, that's full of great songs too. Love Silenced, The Domino Effect and Complex. Actually they're all good!
Another new band discovered. Thanks.
Also. I would love to hear your reaction to Shadow Gallery.
Songs like Comfort Me, Torn, Vow, Don't ever cry just remember, Crystalline Dream and First Light could be a good addition to this channel
That’s an under appreciated band! Threshold, have been putting out overwhelming albums, year in and out. They deserve a wider recognition and praise, in my opinion! Great episode!
The first time I've heard of this band, so thank you for featuring them.
Doug, thanks a lot for Threshold! They're terrific band, absolutely worth attention and further exploration.
I jumped on their train at the time of Pilot In The Sky of Dreams. Had lost contact since. A nice way to connect again. Thanks Doug. :)
Since you mentioned Ayreon - the drummer Johanne James sang on a couple of songs on the Ayreon album Transitus. He has a amazing voice!
If you haven't already check out Kyrbgrinder as well. It's his solo project; he does the lead vocals as well as the drums.
@@thesagaciousman Yes, I'm highly aware of Kyrbgrinder. Love the album Chronicles Of A Dark Machine.
One of the most underrated prog metal bands on earth, with a flawless and exceptional discography!
I discovered this band by accident last year and was instantly captivated. What a hidden treasure they are. Please cover more of their music.
Love it. This band is amazing and this album have a special place in my heart. Thanks Doug. Greetings from Brazil.
Great song from an awesome band! Their latest album is also a blast! Thanks for sharing this reaction, Doug!
Finally, recommended this song a looooong time back, Threshold deserve attention, great band and picked from a great album
Absolutely! Such a fantastic record, one of, if not my favourite by them.
Oh snap! we got some Threshold, we don't get to many Threshold offerings on react video's. This is great!
Never heard of Threshold, but they were fantastic! Thanks for introducing us!
"This is rad!!!" That says it all for me! A week on from this premiering and I have lost count of how many times I've watched this reaction. Doug's reaction to this is just joyful to behold. Such a great song from a great band.
I've never listened to this band before but, has some really interesting progressions happening. Sometimes I hear hints of Yes and Saga to name a couple bands but, this still has its own thing going on.
Awesome this Album! „And The Man who saw trough Time“ Is an Masterpiece! 👏
I have been following this band since the start. Love them THANK YOU for getting them onto the channel !
I've enjoyed this band for many years. Thanks for uploading this!
Thank god you finally did Threshold! The best and most underrated band of the last 30 years. You could dedicate a whole month of reviews on them! hint-hint
Guys dont miss keyboard player Richard West new project Oblivion Protocol in the same vain as Legends of the shires!! Great album called The Fall Of The Shires!!
You have to re-tune your expectations but it's a genuinely phenomenal album. Richard's vocals aren't delivering those anthemic choruses but there's such an earnest energy to them and the songs have such a dramatic edge to them. Highly recommended for fans of Threshold or progressive music more broadly.
I love this band! The "Mac" years remain some of my all-time favorite albums of any genre.
Mine too. Unfortunately he lost his life too soon due to kidney failure and a high alcohol consumption
I'm fact they lost a lot of people from their prime years due to alcoholism.
I love the Mac era albums....I still like the band but I never played the non Mac albums just as much. Have you heard the Sargent Fury albums featuring Mac?
I've been waiting for Threshold to show up here for ages!! Such a talented band.
Love this band, not a bad album. You now have another artist to dig into! Look forward to the next one. Enjoy!
I rate this album the very best prog album ever recorded. Period.
A great album!!! Beautiful melodies mixed with great technique
thanks thanks thanks for reacting this one of my fave songs from Threshold!!!!!
Other than IQ, THRESHOLD are my other favorite band from the past 25 years. I discovered Threshold in 2001, when l first heard their album Hypothetical. As a Dream Theater fan, I immediately fell in love with that Threshold sound. Threshy’s sound is much more concise than DT’s, with more of an emphasis on the songs than virtuoso showmanship. Sure the cats in Threshold can all shred - as evidenced in this tune - but they all play more for the song itself.
Threshold are an amazingly underrated band and have had three excellent main vocalists in their 30 year plus career. Besides this album, my two other top tier Threshy platters are: the aforementioned Hypothetical and March of Progress. Any fan of the progressive-metal genre would enjoy any era of the band.
Cheers from Noo Yawk, ova heyah!
Rock Out & Prog On… in any lexicon!
~ Davey Cretin
PS: I’ve already posted this video on the Threshold Fans Facebook page.
I can’t be there for the premiere, but enjoy. I would recommend Pilot in the Sky of Dreams for your next Threshold song.
Let’a do it doug! A listen to the entire album. It’s your time👍🏻✌🏻
Thank you so much for reacting to Threshold. Such an underrated band and this song is one of their best!!
Yes!
They are fantastic!
You must listen to the singer Andrew ”Mac” McDermott when he sings with Threshold on the Album ”Hypothetical”😍. Listen to the entire album🤩. I am sure you will enjoy it🤠
Thanks to you Doug I have a new obsession since you released this video lol. Thank you for introducing us to new bands we would have otherwise never heard of.
Love love love this band, so underrated and this is my favorite album from them. Saw them twice on tour for this album, it was excellent
Well said brother! Feel exactly the same.
I'm so happy that you've finally landed on Threshold. Absolutely one of the finest and most underrated bands out there. Every album they've done is phenomenal but legends is a total masterpiece!
A very sophisticated song and group.
I am SO HAPPY you reacted to this song. Just like the Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence album, I've listened to this a dozen's of times!
Threshold is an amazing band, make sure you also listen to the albums with Damian Wilson on vocals, especially "March of Progress".
Another band that has a similar incredible sound is "Southern Empire", from Australia. Beautiful music.
This is an excellent song, taken from an incredible album. Threshold's output has been consistently brilliant throughout their career, so there is a lot of great stuff there for you delve into. I discovered them around the time of the album Subsurface. I think Static was the first song I heard, but I love every note on that album.
Woah Doug! It's so cool to see your reaction to them! I remember the first time I've heard them, man I was blown away! Since then, I've seen them 6 times live, they never ever dissapoint!
Brilliant album and a band that REALLY needs more recognition.
Fantastic band. Thanx for reaction, please more. Lost in translation, Pilot in the sky of dreams or Art of reason next please
Thanks for featuring this great band! Cheers from Brasil!
Finally some power metal love, so many good bands like this. Blind Guardian, Rhapsody of Fire, Symphony X the list goes on and on.
Amazing band! needs so much more recognition
Amazing pick! This album was my introduction to Threshold, and their way of writing music and lyrics rly speaks to me. It's timeless and elegant stuff, with a message to chew on and some quirky English prog moments in between. ❤
Awesome! I've been hoping for a Threshold review. I love Threshold so much I went on an 11 hour bus trip to see them in Montreal. I was worried they weren't popular enough to make it. Would have loved to see something from the Damien or Mac era but this is still great. Again, awesome!
Was going to say...perhaps something from the Damian Wilson era or even from Damian's solo work...
Yessss!! Threshold is a great band, and that song is my favorite from that album, such a great song right?
Damn, I had completely forgotten about these guys. Great song. I need to get back into this.
Doug! Thank you so much. Finally, a reaction to Threshold. One of the best progressive bands ever. Catch them every tour when I can. I don't find Glyn the strongest of their singers, but hey, he ain't no slouch! I loved the Damian Wilson with Pete M on second lead guitar. Doug, so glad you liked it, please do more. There so, so so many great songs. If you like a long one, then 'The Box' or 'Pilot in the sky of dreams' as others have said. With those 2 you will have tried out their best singers. Doug, you are on the very THRESHOLD of Prog nirvana!
Wow! This came out of left field. Never thought you would react to Threshold Doug!! Legends of the Shires is a fantastic album. I had a really good feeling that you would like them. There is so much more to discover from this underrated band! Hope to see a lot more Threshold reactions on the channel.
I discovered this band because of Damian Wilson, at the time I listened to the album "Space metal" by the band Star One, I became interested in Damian's voice as soon as I heard it for the first time and then I was curious to know the band he was in part. Since then Threshold has been my favorite Prog Metal band. It's funny that that's the same way I met the band Symphony X (Russel Allen).
Fantastic band and fantastic guys who I've known since 2002 as Karl and Rich were heavily involved in the first few PQ records
Love the introduction to Threshold! Thank you! Strongly recommend Moon Safari - Lover's End Pt. III: Skellefteå Serenade. Underground symphonic Prog from Sweden. Think Yes meets The Beach Boys. Great stuff.
If you like Threshold then perhaps have a listen to the danish band Royal Hunt. Their album The Mission from 2001 is a journey.
Royal Hunt are great too. I do think Doug would enjoy them.
To me Paradox is still their masterpiece. The mission is probably their best with John West.
Amazing band. This album is one of their best, up there with Dead Reckoning or Subsurface. I’d love to see a reaction to the whole Legend Of The Shires album. The song Lost in Translation is my favourite on the album. Pilot in the Sky of Dreams is the one to listen to from Dead Reckoning.
They the album March of Progress. Such and underrated band.
This might be my favorite ever song
Doug this is a band that needs more recognition. If you’re ever so inclined, check out the final track of their 2012 album March of Progress called “The Rubicon”. It’s epic and I think you would enjoy it.
Progrock fan here.... I'd heard *of* Threshold but had not heard them. I'm impressed. Very melodic. I like my prog attached to good songwriting. Evocative of Dream Theater somewhat. I will now endeavor to check them out further. Thanks for this!
you won't be disappointed. Musically über competent and very strong songwriting. I loved the Damian Wilson second time around version of the band, but most Thresh fans would probably herald the 'Mac' era as their favourite. There are so many great songs and albums. Threshold are a rabbit hole you don't come out of for some time!
Threshold, one of my favourites ... try to see them anytime they are around, last time this April. Remember seeing them in Essen Zeche Carl, when Mac was still alive and singing. Sad thing, it reminds me of getting old ... but ain't we all.
Can only echo the rest of the comments
. Great underrated band. Got hooked by "Critical Mass" in the early 2000s but "Hypothetical", what an album!
Their whole discography is of high quality music.
Good review of a great song from a great album.
My favorite band for years!
YEEEES! Theres is Rush, there is Dream Theater and there is Threshold! Thank you sooo much for this video hope to see more from Threshold..their last album is absolut fantastic too
There is a follow up to this album just released, but it is released as side project of Richard West called Oblivion Protocol. the rest of the band didn't want to continue with the theme of Legend of the Shires. It's excellent.
Whoa! Great band, thank you!!!
Carved in stone by Shadow Gallery please!!!
I concur
Or First Light. It's about 35 minutes long and it will confuse a lot of people for lols
You should hear "pilot in the sky of dreams". That album is top notch from start to end. Great record, criminally underrated.
I love discovering new bands to listen to with these reactions. They sound VERY 80s influenced and I am loving it! Some synth/keyboard passages reminded me of Jean Michel Jarre.
I would love to hear your reaction to his Oxygene or Equinox albums/sides.
Loving that band since a long time
Woooow! Threshold!! Doug, please, do Pilot in The Sky of Dreams pleeeeaseeee 🙏🏾
Doug, you just keep digging out my favourite bands! Threshold have done some amazing work over their lifetime, but Legends is probably my most played album of recent years. You should try to listen to Lost in Translation, my favourite track from the album.
Love Threshold... Criminally underrated... Mac was a great singer. RIP... But all incarnations are solid.
I think there's even a little bit of Queen in this, such as the build at about 12:55. Also some of the vocals.
But to be more specific - of course I'm referring to the "dreamier" songs Queen produced, around the "A kind of magic" era.
Finally, Threshold.
I am more familiar with the Damian Wilson era of Threshold so this is a new listen for me. Good stuff. Thank you for sharing.
Highly recommend Small Dark Lines by Threshold for anyone looking to get into them. My person favorite.
Doug, check out the Neal Morse Band, specifically their work entitled “ Similitude of A Dream”
"And there's that upset frog again", 👍I laughed out loud Doug,
Regardless, Thanks anyway, Now I'm onto 'em.
Brilliant band, love all their albums, great choice of song. I would also suggest checking out a band called Arena...Track Moviedrome 19min epic.
