Well she is also saying that getting a dsrl is at least 2000€ investment while forgetting awesome cameras like canon 80. Sony a series, Fuji xt-t2. etc
Even if you want the bokehliciousness and low light of FF, OG A7 can be had for around $500 used on Ebay, get a cheap vintage nifty fifty, and away goes the noise.
@@thehiarchiallyposessedghos9881 IMO the of a7 is a bit of a dog, terrible shutter button, unusable af. It's fine if you only want it for the extra light you get from FF but in all other ways it's not a great camera.
For people with low budget, sony A6000 is a great camera. Its mirrorless, has interchangeable lens system, and takes great photos. Plus it's like only 500$ for the body. Just get yourself a A6000 and a 35mm or 50mm or even the new sigma 16mm and you're done.
It really feels like people are sleeping on the a6X00 line. They’re typically cheaper than the RX100s, not that much bigger, but take way better photos and videos and are compatible with the Sony E-mount line of lenses. The output is really incredible, especially for the price.
My only problem with the 6000 line is that they are inferior to the line they replaced, Sony NEX. YES, the Sony next line actually had more hardware for a better price.
David Vekony I can understand why there may be a misunderstanding. But Becca isn’t cutting corners when it comes to her equipment (pixel 3, a7s), for DSLRs, she’s referencing full-frame cameras (5d4). If you get a $400 canon rebel t7 w/ 18-55mm kit lens and thinking that’s on the same level as a 5d4 w/ 24-70mm since they’re both labeled as a DSLR. Then just stick with an iPhone/Pixel for insta. Ps - pixel 3 with night-sight is a MONSTER!
Well, I think she did the recommendations based on her experience and that's why she excluded so many cameras. She did basically go for the highest priced options and said if you can't afford that, buy a pixel 3. In my opinion, she could have also looked at the mid-price options
She also completely omitted smaller DSLMs like the Sony a6300 - a camera I would take over a stupidly expensive RX 100 any day. My recommendation for someone wanting to have something better than a smartphone would be the a6000 which is less than half the price of the last few RX100s
If you’re getting a cheap APS-C camera, you’re better off with an RX100 Mk 4 because it’s not likely you’re going to be stretching its capabilities and the small size will encourage you to use it more and thus improve as a photographer faster.
I agreed at first but people ask me the same question about what dslr to get when really they should just use their phone or small point and shoot. so please scare them away from buying a camera they will keep in auto and shoot jpg and call themselves a photographer
Kind of shocked you didn't mention something like a Canon t7i or Sony a6000. They are way more versatile than the Sony Rx100 where you're stuck with the single lens. If someone is truly becoming interested in photography, the best and most affordable recommendation would be a entry level DSLR or Mirrorless with a cheap prime.
I enjoyed this video until she said that you need 3000$ to get a dslr set-up, that is just wrong to say in a video for "new photographers" you can get kits for as cheap as 400$, they arent super high res photos but it allowes you to learn the ins and outs of photography on a dslr, and for most people a mid range lens and a canon 80d or 7d are as much as you need and you cant really tell the difference with the super high end bodies.
I think the point that is being made, whether rightly or wrongly, is that smartphones and pocket cameras are so good that the difference between them and a T7i or an 80D isn't worth it.
The reason you buy a pro body like the 5D III is not because it takes better pictures than a T7i or an D3500 or an A6000 because it doesnt. It's because it allows to get better images easier, more often and in more extreme situations.
Just invite people to buy a good initial zoom or invest €100-200 in a Canon/Nikon prime lens! You will immediately see the difference, even compared to a flagship phone. There simply is no match.
@@pspgoman9934 The difference between a smartphone and even a used $300 T5i with an $80 prime lens is absolutely worth it. Actually using & comparing both makes the difference crystal clear.
Uhh you can get an entry level DSLR like the Canon Rebel series for around 500 or even cheaper used and they include a zoom lens and a telephoto lens. None of this "need to spend 2k or more"
You can get a Sony A7 mk i for around 500-600 dollars and it's full frame ;-; I'd take a full frame Nikon D750 or D800 for around 1000 dollars and put the rest of the money into a couple good prime lenses maybe a 50mm and an 85mm.
Wow Becca this video is soooo good! Every single time that I watch my camera gear box it’s like “ok, I have a problem, first step: find help”. And after watching your video... it’s like “ok, so I’m not the only one!” Please keep up with this series of camera videos, they are super great. Thank you!
I don't get this video. It's targeted at beginners clearly, "you probably don't know what an f stop is". Why is she recommending top of the line gear exactly which is catered towards professionals? She says we would all be using Leca's if we could afford them, but then says that she uses a 5D and a Sony A7 which together can easily buy you a Leica. I'm so confused.
I use the 4 camera system: The camera you always have with you: Your phone, for impromptu shots and things that don't require amazing pictures. The camera you take out just in case: a small pocket camera like the RX100, G7X, or a small film compact like the GR1 or Klasse. The camera for when you are going out with friends or just going on a walk and might see something you what to photograph. The camera you plan when to take out: Micro 4/3 or larger sensor (or film) interchangeable lens camera and a few lenses. This is a camera you use when you know you are going somewhere you want you take photos of or have a planned shoot/subject. The one you take out for "good" photos. The fun camera: Something a bit out of the ordinary or unusual. For most digital photographers this is basically any film camera. For film photographers this is usually a weird film camera (lomography) or a different format than what they normally shoot (APS, MF, LF) For me the cameras are: HTC 10, Pentax Espio 120SW, Olympus Pen-F (digital) with 3 fast primes, and a Yashica Electro 35 GTN or Pentax Spotmatic F However the year before it was: Blackberry Priv, Sony RX100v, Hasselblad Xpan, Spotmatic F.
I'm glad you mentioned the cell phone cameras. They're so great now for most ppl. But the higher levels for the enthusiasts is great to see! Thank you!
Why all the tech in this video starts from around $1000? There are plenty of options for DSLR's and system cameras for far less money! Thing is, they will also support changeable optics and produce shots better, than a smartphone. I think, that if you wanna start taking pictures and learning a thing about photography, you better should start with those cheap, but powerful enough options and then, if you would like to continue, you could upgrade your camera body and save your optics if you had bought some.

I watched the whole thing, and I'm even below Instagrammer-level. That's how fun to watch Becca is.
If you shoot Sony or Fuji, Capture One makes a free edition for those users. I shoot Fuji and right now for the past month have been testing out the free Fuji edition(which only opens up fuji raw files) and I like it. It's compatible with 3rd party presets and filters made for capture one and works well enough for Fuji. I prefer the interface to Raw Therapee, but last time I used that app was on Linux and not Windows, so not a full 1:1 comparison. Also, last I tried LR mobile requires an Adobe subscription to open RAW shots not taken from the app itself. I instead edit the raw file in Snapseed, but that was a bit unstable editing a 14mb fuji raw file, but better with a 7mb Panasonic m4/3 raw file.
Is the sony cyber shot 20.4mp or the Panasonic Super Zoom Camera good cameras?? Just for taking scenery shots or family photos. What one out of the 2 cameras are better
I‘m shooting stills on my Leica M5 and M8, for video I have GH5s but I’m currently checking out the new BM Pocket 4K and I‘m seriously thinking about switching to that. Love you stuff! Long shall Film life.
Sounds like you just described a a6300! Great video. Just got a A7 this week and I forgot to check prices for lenses before getting it. Still so fun to use though. Big tip for beginner hobbiests. Buy used! Most people dont even use their cameras much, and you can get a mint condition body and lens for half the price.
@@juanperezmondragon1676 haha I know, but thank god the e-mounts are getting more popular now and you've got really good manual lenses for sale for next to nothing (compared to sony lenses).
She basically made a Fujifilm x100f, X-E3, X-A5 or T100. Go Fujifilm and never look back! Maybe look at Sony every once in a while, they still do good stuff.
Although the presenter isn't as knowledgeable as some here, it is cool to see her promoting Rawtherapee to beginners. Using Rawtherapee sure helped me get better at editing, and I learned much more than I ever would have using Lightroom. Now, I could probably afford Adobe CC, but I prefer the look I get out of Rawtherapee, in comparison to the ACR raw engine.
I am not sure why Lightroom was called expensive (going so far as to say it twice). 10 bucks gets one access to both Photoshop and Lightrooms latest versions. This also gives you access to special features in the free version that was praised so highly. By contrast, a perpetual license for Capture One would set the average shooter back $300. You'd have to pay for Adobe's solution for nearly 3 years before getting to the day one out of pocket cost of Capture One. It's truly confusing why Lightroom was singled out for price. Having said all that, while the video did include some useful advice it did not quite live up to the promise of the title. It was more an incomplete overview of the choices than a breakdown of what the important choice were. I say incomplete because she leaped from the cell phone to the point and shoot and then again to high end dslr but skipped competent mid range shooters like the Olympus Pen E-PL9 and the Canon M50. And I think the most egregious omission was not giving the advice of buying an *OLD* camera. Not necessarily old like 20 or 30 years, but cameras within the last 3 to 6 years are actually pretty good and are not priced out in the stratosphere. You can get a Sony A7 with a lens for less than $1000 now. Amazon has deals on cameras from the oft underrated and more often ignored Pentax system that come with multiple lenses for good prices. This video could have been so much more without necessarily being much longer.
Of course this is sponsored by Capital One. It should be renamed "How to choose the perfect camera, a rich person's guide". Suggesting the Pixel 3 out of the gate or iPhone XS!? And then ultra premium point and shoot recommendations that don't even have changeable lenses? Insanity. If you really must have just a larger sensor, you can buy older DSLRs and mirrorless models, save a lot of money, and see how you like them. Even the oldest camera with a larger sensor will outperform a smaller sensor. Personally, I think Full Frame is overrated too. It's more expensive, it's larger, it's heavier, you must have full frame lenses... everything is just more. APS-C still gives good results while lightening the load. This chick really is too into photography, a level of immersion that the general public will NOT get or finance. I have no doubt that she would venture into Phase One or Hassleblad medium format if she had more money.
I'd recommend to get used old 5D or 5D2 or Nikon old FF equivalent or even old high end APS-C like 40D (I'm not familiar with Nikon equivalent) couple of cheap zoom lenses and while you practice you'll get the idea what improvements do you need. If after a year of practice you still have no idea what you need from your camera, you haven't been practicing enough.
Nikon's D7xxx series is good (7000, 7100, 7200, 7500). I have a D7200 and it rocks. It's very comfortable to hold and change settings. There's the new D500, with is Nion's APSC flagship... but with that money you could buy an older FF camera.
A Pentax KP with some awesome vintage K mount lenses can produce exquisite pictures. I myself use a humble A6000 with a vintage Takumar 50mm f/1.4 using an adapter.
I'm a professional photographer, a friend told me about "what was said" on this video and it was like "WHAT???". Then he sent me the link... ARE YOU SERIOUS??? This how you expect helping people to choose a camera??? This is what i got -----> 1st advice is "go buy one of last smartphone" 3:19 this is not how we manipulate a lens... BRAVO
Very interesting going thru the purchase stage at the moment as dropping down from Olympus omd em5 MK II due to health and still want to get shots at air show's and stuff so having real fun trying to find one great report stay safe
Someone who uses two separate expensive flagship cameras when the sun goes down clearly should not be recommending to the average consumer or even someone that knows how to use a camera. The fact that this lady didn’t even use a Fuji film enough to recommend or talk about speaks volumes for the validity of her information. Why does this video exist from such a highly reputable and seemingly diverse source? If anyone is interested in photography and wants to start out in the right place look at the x100 line from Fuji film first. If you want video than Sony will be your next bet, just understand that the power of your phone with a dolly mount or gimbal goes a long way.
I DON'T AGREE AT ALL ! Still love The Verge, don't get me wrong, but you just jumped from a 200$ point and shoot to a 2000$ DSLR ! What about Canon 80D for exemple ? And 1000$ lens ? What about a 50mm f/1.8 that only costs 100$ ? You could get a really nice set up for not even 800$ ! This "guide" is really pointless in my opinion..
You might like the Sony RX1R II except that the lenses aren't interchangeable and carry a huge price tag. It has a fixed 35mm lens with the same sensor and auto focus system as a7rii but as small as RX100 with hot shoe and viewfinder.
So first you are telling people that a small camera is really important for you. And in the next sentence you want the F mount on your camera. Which equals huge lenses, far bigger than the camera itself. How are you going to hold that, it will be unbalanced incredibly.
I am a aspiring amateur photographer and a Verge fan my self, the point where you explained your dream 📷 nailed the whole video otherwise it would be just like any other clickbaity tutorials....🙌🙌 Please make more photography videos
Terrible commercial. And overall, just poor camera advice. Doesn't make much sense to split your camera choice between two mounts even when you factor in adaptors.
I would very much prefer something like a Fuji GFX 50R for that money. It's quite slow compared to the Canon, but I don't need that speed for doing portraits. What you get in return is >1000$ and a far superior image quality.
What about cheaper mirrorless cameras? Like the Sony a6000 line; I have a NEX 6 and so far I’m super happy with it; more capable than a point and shoot but less expensive than a full frame DSLR

Great video. Excellent info. Txs.
I think the A7iii is JUST the one everyone DESIRES! ITS ONE HELL OF A SHARPSHOOTER!! I ABSOLUTELY LOVE MINE!!!
You are not hip if you dont use 35 mm and kodak film.
You described a dream camera very similar to a Sony a6000/6300/6500. I've been rocking an a6000 since it came out and I am still very impressed by it.
It's not always about the gear, it's about how you use it. Especially starting out and learning
Love the create dream camera section
have you tried the eos R? What’s your take on it?
A Pentax KP with some awesome vintage K mount lenses can produce exquisite pictures. I myself use a humble A6000 with a vintage Takumar 50mm f/1.4 using an adapter.
I'm a professional photographer, a friend told me about "what was said" on this video and it was like "WHAT???". Then he sent me the link... ARE YOU SERIOUS??? This how you expect helping people to choose a camera???
This is what i got -----> 1st advice is "go buy one of last smartphone"
3:19 this is not how we manipulate a lens... BRAVO
Very interesting going thru the purchase stage at the moment as dropping down from Olympus omd em5 MK II due to health and still want to get shots at air show's and stuff so having real fun trying to find one great report stay safe
Should I start with Lightroom CC or Lightroom Classic?
please what camera do you suggest I get to be able to a shoot freestyle videos ?
what about best camera for video??
There are grip bumps for the RX100 series.
Who has tried Raw Therapee? How does it compare to something like DarkTable?
Someone who uses two separate expensive flagship cameras when the sun goes down clearly should not be recommending to the average consumer or even someone that knows how to use a camera. The fact that this lady didn’t even use a Fuji film enough to recommend or talk about speaks volumes for the validity of her information. Why does this video exist from such a highly reputable and seemingly diverse source? If anyone is interested in photography and wants to start out in the right place look at the x100 line from Fuji film first. If you want video than Sony will be your next bet, just understand that the power of your phone with a dolly mount or gimbal goes a long way.
robob221 yes, bad video
Why will you put the I/O ports where your grip is?
I want a small and light camera with preferably Apsc sensor and ibis for shooting video and photo while traveling.
This "guide" is really pointless in my opinion..
becca farsace is my favorite person from the verge so far. more photography videos
Very good comparison. My camera of choice (for the past 5 years) is the first a7r with the Zeiss 55mm f1.8. Love it to death.
I have a Canon 550d wire the kit lens, 50 mm f1.8 and 24 mm f2.8, and thinking og upgrading to 5d or 6d for the full frame features
Love the video and great personality on camera!
Terrible commercial.
And overall, just poor camera advice. Doesn't make much sense to split your camera choice between two mounts even when you factor in adaptors.
But still Becca what camera should i buy?
Very nice video. Camera companies need to take a note!
Beginner camera for macro, landscape and wildlife photography?
I'm loving that mockup camera! Becca, get some funding and make it real!
Now I see why you got an A7C! I’m thinking on doing the same 😃
my personal favourite camera:- Canon 1dx mark 2
Yeah because Peter McKinnon and other popular photographers and TH-cam uses it
Small problem not many people have 5-6k to spend on cameras 😅
I would very much prefer something like a Fuji GFX 50R for that money. It's quite slow compared to the Canon, but I don't need that speed for doing portraits. What you get in return is >1000$ and a far superior image quality.
I'm more Leica M10 kind of guy.
Pfffft... I like the new Hasselblad H6D-400c with its 400 mpixel medium format sensor. /Sarcasm.
77d vs t7i vs m50 which one should I buy
What about cheaper mirrorless cameras? Like the Sony a6000 line; I have a NEX 6 and so far I’m super happy with it; more capable than a point and shoot but less expensive than a full frame DSLR
I super like Becca. Keep up the good work!
*Becca💙 i want to buy a mirrorless camera but I've to choose between one of these only:- canon 200d, sony a6500, panasonic lumix G7, canon M50. which should i choose for photography by the way nice video plz make more video on 📷*
а6500 no boubt
@@diyowl5496 are u sure a6500 can beat because canon has recently launched m50 and lumix G7 is also new camera both having 4k recording functionality,etc
@@NIKHILKUMAR-cv5hd Here are some very big pros:
-good autofocus;
-IBIS;
-VERY GOOD low light;
-1080p 120fps;
-no crop in video;
-super sharp 4k (6k downsample);
-SLOG picture profiles for video;
-good choise for lenses;
-good EVF;
-much better than g7 and m50 for stills
@@diyowl5496 oh really thanx diyowl
@@liberty0758 my dear I've to only choose between canon 200d, Sony a6500, canon m50 and lumix G7
Nice video Becca 👏
Moar Becca! Great overview guide and it adds to how good this is when you can see she loves photography and could talk endlessly about it. That end tho
Have you thought about reviewing the Hasselblad X1D?
What about the Canon M50? I am confused between the 77d and the M50 (money and size is not a problem).
if size is not a problem go for 77d, as the mount system will allow you to grow your lens collection and, when you upgrade your camera later, take them all with you
Between the Sony RX100 series and the Canon / sony camera's, there is a LOT of choice. Like, a lot a lot.
Nowadays you can get an excellent (APS-C) camera for less than a $1000 (or 500 used). And good lenses don't have to cost more than a grand either.
Is Nikon coolpix p9000 good for night sky photography ?
"Lightroom, if you don't quite have the money for that." What about if you don't have the money for the $2000-$3000 cameras you just recommended to people who "know what aperture is"
Wait. The thumbnail. Is that a Sony rx100 with a lens mount photoshopped on it?? I don’t remember Sony making ilc with flip up viewfinders..
Rad video, thank you!
I now still have to suffice with the D90 thinking of filming but eh very bad
So if you like taking pictures you automatically are an instagramer? That kind of idiotic generalization is this?
Love this series~
Awesome video! Look forward to more great stuff
That pixel 3 shot looked sickk
You forgot about those of us that do enough video that it has us reconsidering our ecosystem (I've shot Nikon for years). But still take enough stills that jumping to a full time video cam isn't possible and the Autofocus of the GH5 concerns us.
35mm Kodak film for me too!!
(Canon 1N, Leica M7, & Contax TVS)
The closest thing to your dream camera is probably the RX1R II. Compact, 42MP full frame, great EVF, mic jack, aperture ring, hotshoe
