Love your enthusiasm dude.. Saab was a really good company. Before GM. Since i have worked for Saab for many years i can give you a cool story. When saab made the 9-3 sportswagon they got very strict instructions from GM on what they could spend money on. For example they should use the opel vectra satnav system. When the car was ready and some bigshots from GM where in Sweden to check it out, they discovered that in the car was a completely other satnav system alltogether. A much, much better system, designed and built by Saab. Of course they asked what the hell was going on, and the answer they got from the Saab technitions where simple: the system from the opel sucked. So they built a good one..

According to Jeremy Clarkson (while he was still hosting for Top Gear) the reason why GM actually sent somebody out to Sweden was that the project was getting too expensive and the "suites in Detroit" wanted to know why. Unless I'm mistaken, I believe Saab spent over $2 million dollars on that system. I can imagine that it is probably the biggest fuck you General Motors ever received.

Yes. They sold Opel because of to low profit. Whilst also selling rebadged opels as Chevrolets with slightly Different design for cheaper. And totally not understanding european markets. So the consequence: sell opel and pull chevy (except cprvette) out of europe/at least germany. If you are thinking "wait, but then they can't sell cars to germans anymore, except those five Cadillacs a year" then you're.... absolutely right. Oops. GM also insisted on Opel selling a few rebadged cars that all sucked and after probelms occured (ex. Sintra crashtest...), only then opel was allowed to develope their own car...
At least the frontera was kinda good. But sintra, Antara and some others sucked. Oh, and they basically killed Vauxhall in the 80s/90s and made them sell only Opels with Different badges and no personality anymore.

It didn't help that Saab was sucking GM dry financially. They were given vehicles and told to change the badging and body and instead Saab spent millions reengineering the vehicles. However, they did make them somewhat better. I'll take a 9-7x Aero over a Trailblazer SS any day. My 06 9-7x Arc had some quirky problems but it sounded, handled, and performed better than it's GM counterparts - Chevy Trailblazer, Buick Rainier, Oldsmobile Bravada, GMC Envoy, AND Isuzu Axiom.

@RavenousElf the transfer case control motor was a joke. Mine broke and it locked the front output. I had to replace the seal and CV half-shaft due to pitting from crow-hopping during slow speed turns. They should have just used the Torsion limited slip xfer case out of the Aero/SS on all models.
It also wreaked havoc in the snow. Doing 35mph, front output engaged. Everything fine. Person in front of me hits the brakes, I slow down, front output disengaged, rear wheels lose traction and speed up, front output engages, car jerks around in the snow and slides out of my lane. Over and over and over. Ended up on the side of the road slowly getting closer the cliff edge as I tried turning around. Never drove it in snow again.

GM were absolutely clueless of what a Saab was only ever launched three new models over a period of nineteen years. I mean seriously, Saab was about sporty cars with a rally heritage and cool engineering. The absolutely first thing GM should've done when buying into Saab was to develop 4WD models and a new sports car. Instead, they gave those funds to Opel.

Here's the thing about Saab's. Once you own one, you get the Saab bug. After owning my '06 9-3 for a few years, I spent last year looking online and craigslist daily for another saab which is how I ended up finding a very low mileage '07 9-3 convertible. I'd love to own some 9-5's and some 900's too haha.

I still have dreams about driving my old 900S. There was nothing fast about it, but there was something about taking it on winding roads through the woods at night that excited me in a way that no other car has since. In 2015 I pulled out on a country road and got T-boned at 50 mph by a Ford Explorer with tow hooks on the front. The airbags didn't deploy and the driver door was caved in, but I walked away without a scratch. Saabs are some of the best cars ever made.

My late wife cried when I gave it away. Drove the car all over Europe and the U.S. Great Winter car. Would plow through the snow, never needed snow tires, heated seats and was good handling. Put the rear seats down and could load the heck out of it. Great gas mileage!

Something VERY SPECIAL for Saab was one of there Engines. Have you ever heared about the Saab SVC Engine? what the Japanese are doing and planing now, saab was making it at 2001. the first steps to a self Ignition Benzin Engine....Ok it was a Engine with variable Compression. A ratio from 14:1 to 8:1 by angling the Cylinder Head up to 4 degrees. 5 Cylinders 1,6l and over 300 Nm with 225 HP with the same fuel consuption as a normal 1,6l engine. and that in 2001. GM those Money Cunts striked the project down, cause of too much money (what a surprise).
saab had it, the engine was working, they used it in a 9-5 wagon. Imagine Saab would still exist or the engine was build in as a special Edition for 9-5 and 9-3. I love Saab so much for that!
I and we all should hate GM for that. The main inventor of the planned obsolescence, the shame as a car company, ruiner of so much beautiful in the car world (beside ecologicals)
GM SHOULD GO TO HELL FOREVER!!! (and tell the devil that for sure more Companies follow)

Ive had 6 SAABS..ive been super lucky, I live in the Hamptons on Long Island and have bought them and other cars from teachers for prices that are Riddick, and once I one got from the dealer that's the SAAB story of the century, I have a 92 red 900 s t convertible with 33k on it i got for 2,300 $ brand new, barned like most Hampton cars and driven either just a few months over the summers or back and forth to a school, one I got was a 90 900 s with 12k for 250 $ the Pirelli tires(worth more each then the car) still had the rubber spikes, everyone is scared of buying them and think there's a problem finding parts or they stopped making them, they've always sold for great deals and it looks like you're driving a 40,000 $ car.People when they get new cars that are rich just want the old ones gone, I drove a 87 944 t off somebody's lawn for free..i love the NG ones 2,all the parts fit them from i think 94-2003, when i bought a SAAB, the last 900s t off the line that went on the anniversary edition line 93 then had the 2.3 t in it with all Viggen parts,i put in a few more part and got 285 HP out of it,nothing from 7-145 could get near me,i brought my 99 SAAb 900 t in for some work and saw this one of a kind Saab on the side of the building,i asked how much and they said it doesn't run and we've sent it out to 11 SAAB places and it won't stop stalling, and explained how it by mistake was 4 cars mashed up,,then he said and pointed to the upper left corner and said its in this area the problem but we don't know what it is,it says map 4 and that part of the engine is 4?i went home grabbed my scanner when nobody was around and it came back MAP.I went to a junk yard that only had Saabs BMW Benzs and so on and the owner used to let me go find my own sht while the staff ate the donuts and coffee I brought, and right on the top stabilizer bar was a 4 screw MAP sensor.i went back and told them i have a new engine put in and i really wanted it,i was a good 10 year customer so they left to talk, they came back with paperwork and said its sold as-is,no warranty no matter what.i signed it and they said give me 1,250$..I almost sht my self.i got to the gas station put in the new MAP got gas and it was fixed.Right now I'm looking at a 2003 2.3 t 75k silver coupe for 1,100 $ and be 50-128 k in mint shape from 96-2004 where I live they sell at most for 2 grand..I've flipped a few from out here too,a 88 560SEL teacher car 42k 2,900 $ mid night blue red leather now a scratch..and resold it for 8,200 in a week.if you don't believe me put in craigslist Long Island and the Easthampton zip code and search Saab and you'll see 99 900s t converts 2,000 no miles and steals...my dad gave me a Jeep worth 9,000 $ I'm selling it and ill buy a Saab 93 for 3k brand new with under 50 k...and use the rest to flip other cars,or get a older Saab and put it under classical insurance and find a perfect 86 Burgandy 900s t convert with low miles show room shape

You my friend.. you sound like we could get along very well. My dad had a 99 when I was a kid. Then as years went by he got some opel, a Saab 93, an Audi 100, a Jeep. After that he got a 220 hp Saab 95 wich I learned to drive in. Then sadly he hit a moose. Soo.. he got another Saab 95 with 300 hp that I took over when I got my liscense last year. Then he bought a 2007 Saab 95 wich he still has. The 300 hp 95 I drove broke so I got myself a Bmw E39 528i, then a Volvo 744. And I just sold the Volvo and bought a.. yeah you guessed it! A 2004 Saab 95 2,0t. I love Saabs and I will always do.

Thanks! Loved it. Although in my opinion you missed their greatest car the 9000 / 9-5. I had 2 of them, what a joy to drive. I used to zip around DC beltway traffic like it was standing still. Quality and Attention to detail was off charts, only car company I know of that had pink insulation in the doors. They were reliable only major work was a head gasket and clutch. At 170K miles i'm not complaining.

I worked for a SAAB dealer when it was relaunched here in New Zealand. They (the 900i, 9000CS/CD/AERO) were so understatedly brilliant. Had one customer purchase an 9000 AERO, happy with the performance and power but wanted more. So with factory and Abott Racing (England) enhancements his AERO was insane to drive, by that I mean it wanted to be driven hard. I'll never forget that 9000.
What model also not mentioned was the 900S/SE (with the V6 (a bit nose heavy with a great engine sound)). Then came the 9-3, 9-3 AERO, 9-3 Viggen. Replacing the 9000's was the 9-5, 9-5 V6, 9-5 AERO. I know there's lots more to the later models (9-3, 9-5), like using GM (Opel) platforms, just strengthened to SAABs quality. But let's not forget the 9000 platform was shared Fiat (Chroma), Lancia (Thema), Alfa Romeo (164), and some others I can't think of right now.
Shame such a brand should become just another GM generic.

Because reliable cars are not profitable in their eyes. Why make something that will last if you can make something that will break just after the premiere of the next shitty version of your budget car. No Soul, No Passion, Designed for Proffit Only. That's what happened to GM, that's what happened to Volkswagen, that's what Happened to most of the popular car companies. The Cars are no longer the goal, they are the means. If the Corporate Rats at Volkswagen saw switching production to cheese grinders as much more profitable, they would do that. They don't care about making cars, they care about making money and cars are a way to achieve that...

I grew up in my parents 9-5 and I adore it to this day. I've gone off the road in both this and a Ford S-Max and I can tell you all the SAAB has a certain reassuring atmosphere, it not only is safe, it feels safe as you drive along. The only problem it has is the B205 engine, which is less reliable than the more powerful B235.
