  • Despite claiming to be a Spyro fan, most of the series is a complete mystery to me. Beyond the original games, the Reignited Trilogy and... *sigh*... Enter the Dragonfly, I know absolutely nothing. I feel like a fake fan. So to fix this, I've decided to explore the corners of the Spyro series that are unfamiliar to me, starting with Spyro: Season of Ice! And here is what I think of the game. I hope you enjoy!

Now for this review, I will say the Japanese version actually fixes some of the issues such as there being a map and the fairies acting as checkpoints for Spyro, and there's even an English patch of it out now. However, it still doesn't fix the fundamental issue of the levels being repetitive as hell and the camera being a HUGE pain for gliding. Plus with the map being fully displayed instead of having Season of Flame's fog let you map out your own path and mark collectables, it made it a HUGE pain to get all the gems and the stage collectables. So because of that I can say the game is well made, but flawed in a way that still makes it boring to get to the end.

I remember getting this for Christmas back in 2001 and getting stuck at the Twilight Bulb Factory and never returned to play it again. It was just so redundant that I lost my patience and interest at that point. A year later the sequel Spyro 2 Season of Flame was released and I ended up loving that one. It fixed all the flaws from this one and ended up being a fun and challenging game. Attack of the Rhynocs was okay, but they took it in a non linear direction inspired by games like Zelda, but it was confusing figuring out where to go next, and I ended up giving up after getting stuck because I didn't feel like having to look up a walkthrough back then.

Season of Flame is actually the next review I’ve got in the works! I’m looking forward to seeing what Attack of the Rhynocs will be like but I believe there’s still a handful of Spyro games I need to get through before then. Totally understand losing patience with Season of Ice. It’s fun to start with, but it gets dull

Does anyone else get motion sickness playing this game? I remember only playing it for a couple levels as a kid because I had to keep putting it down. I watched this video to see if it still does, and sure enough I can only watch it for a minute or so before getting really uncomfortable. No other game does it, even other isometric ones. I wonder what the difference is?
Thanks for the thorough review, as a big Spyro fan I always felt I was missing out so it's good to know it's not that great!

I do, I think it's primarily because of the viewing angle and Spyro always staying exactly in the middle of the screen, giving the impression of him being in another three dimensional layer than the world.

I think you should take a look at Spyro A Hero's Tail. Easily the best game in the series after the original trilogy (and the Reignited Trilogy).
Not a masterpiece, but definitely good

It’s definitely on my list, so I’ll get there eventually!

I mean, I can forgive most of these issues mainly because it was the first portable Spyro game. They wanted to play things safe. As far as the game being repetitive, I honestly don’t care. Going for 100% in the original Trilogy was fun because of how well Spyro controls. Exploring the levels at my own pace was what kept me invested. I played Reignited Trilogy right after doing everything in N. Sane Trilogy, (outside of time relics; screw that nonsense), and it was a breath of fresh air not having to go backtrack nearly as much or have to worry about playing through stages perfectly. Casually speaking, I have no problems with Crash Bandicoot. But if you’re going to force me to complete either a Spyro or Crash game, I’m choosing Spyro every time.

Tedious, a bit too challenging *coughs* (Space Age Speedway), easy boss fights, poor level design that makes you feel lost, AND fairies don't checkpoint our progress after freeing them every time Spyro loses a life.

My thoughts on the Spyro hand held games:
-Season of Ice = It's just Spyro 1 but with aimless wandering 🙃
-Season of Flame = A good cross between Ripto's Rage and Year of the Dragon
-Attack of the Rhynocs = Decent Zelda clone
-Spyro Orange = You gotta beat the levels 3 times to unlock the final hub world??? Man F*** that!!!!
-Shadow Legacy = The dragon kata powers are cool but this game is nothing but a boring grind fest. It makes Paper Mario Sticker Star look like a 10 outta 10 master piece

0:16 I didn't like his Skylanders iteration at first either, but it grew on me. They also improved it in later games, which in all fairness, I actually quite enjoyed. Never played 4 or 5, but I enjoyed the others. Also, something about him in the 3DS games looks intimidating He has this hungry, lustrous look like he's zeroing in on his next meal.

I had both of the gameboy advance spyro games and they um. They sucked. At least this one was more tolerable than spyro orange or w/e

You didn't like Spyro 2 Season of Flame? That one was actually good and a huge improvement over this first one if you ask me.

@@msw0322 No I more meant Spyro orange. I think I had both season of flame and ice but I was also very young so I barely remember it, but I wasn’t huge on it either

@@DumasP Ahh, gotcha. I didn't care for Spyro Orange either. The concept of Spyro and Crash swapping universes was cool, but it was poorly executed. Just a bunch of boring mini games :/

I still playing this game nowadays, I think most of isometrical games like this, you can feel boring by the backtracking (despite if you fall you loose a lot of progression), it´s the problem at my pointview, I love this game however I recognize it´s problem

    In my humble opinion
This game is worst than enter the dragonfly
This is the worst game i saw and playd in my life
I think my issue with the controls because i playd it on my phone with the touch screen
even if the control issues isn't there it's impossible to remember the levels layouts and there design is just some random flat grounds in top of each other and the speedway AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.........................................
I don't want even to think about it
