    We all love to root for Luke while he's landing the crucial shots to destroy the Death Star...but what if we've been wrong all this time? What if destroying the Death Star is COMPLETELY wrong? This episode shows exactly why the destruction of the Death Star would have not only hurt the Rebel Alliance, but the entire galaxy...

    I’d argue that Palpatine’s takeover was no where near as smooth as you’re saying. Don’t forget, he engineered a galactic war between the Seperatists and the Republic, funded the Clone Army and the Droid Army and I can’t imagine that war being all that healthy on the economy either. While it may not have been as damaging as the Rebellion’s hostile takeover, it was hardly a smooth and peaceful transition that hardly affected the livelihoods of the galactic population.

    • @YEETUSDAFEETUS
      @YEETUSDAFEETUS 2 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      actually I would say it's dependant on the planet some probably benefit from the clone wars and were far enough away that they could produce/manufacture for the war without it ever affecting them versus places that get absolutely taken over with fighting

    • @EmperorProtects1
      @EmperorProtects1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Yes, but that would've been smooth to get over, with a new reformed state You'd be able to just erase any economic problems with the funds of the Empire, as we know the Republic was using a partial amount of their GDP to fund the clone army.

    A couple of things are being ignored here: 1. The destruction of the first Death Star would've been bad for the economy yes, but the blow would've been softened as more planets joined the Rebellion and led to both the Rebellion and the Empire pumping a lot more money into the economy and helping it to grow. 2. The Empire did not leave the galactic population alone. The Empire's policies would show that they were extremely oppressive to non-humans, for example committing genocide against the Lasat population and enslaving the Wookies.

      I'm not sure that's true either. Taxation stifles the economy, although projects like highways and bridges can help it because they make it easier to do business. The Death Star existed in order to bring all planets into the Empire. To increase their tax base. The Empire didn't actually make it easier to do business. They just made sure that people kept less of their earnings.

      Empire was literally almost never tyrannical in the EU. Did a few people get offed by Sith? Sure. But the vast majority of the galaxy lived in a perfectly "normal" social structure, were well protected from pirates and others that would disrupt them and were financially stable. Some of the core worlds were tightly controlled but hundreds of others barely even knew the Empire existed beyond the taxes.

    your reference to the emperor "he pretty much left the galactic population alone" is wrong. He was the master mind behind the clone wars so everything since Naboo to his rise as the empire should be considered his fault. While the rebels may seem as terrorist who put the galaxy in a huge recession, the emperor is the one who engulfed the galaxy in a war, destroyed the balance of power from the inside, created dozens of rebel factions and small civil wars and destroyed the jedi order who was tasked to bring peace thus allowing even more crime to rise. you said that people spend less when they are scared and thats one of the first things to happen when a recession hits, well im pretty sure people were really scared the entire time the emperor was in power. sorry matt patt, im unconvinced about this theory. the only reason why they were able to build the death star was due to slave labor not a strong economy.

While a new republic was formed it still had to contend with the remaining power structure of the Empire including top admirals and other military brass still in power across hundreds of worlds. If politics is messy here on Earth with just one planet and one species you have no idea the hell the Star Wars Galaxy went through because of this. You do realize that the Death Star was primarily constructed via slave labor, yes? And that the Empire was extremely racist (speciesist?) and treated every alien species as second class citizens? Bullshit that the Empire didn't effect imperial citizens. And Darth Vader was feared throughout the entire galaxy. There is also the Base Delta Zero operations carried out as a result of the Tarkin Doctrine.
    Another thing. Attacking a military target and attacking a civilian target are completely different things. Don't try to equate them. The Alliance to Restore the Republic were NOT terrorists. A terrorist attacks civilian targets to instill fear in the populace. If anything, the rebels were stopping attacks like this from happening by destroying the Death Star and opposing the Empire's tyranny.

    Everyone hated the empire, and the transition wasn't smooth. They declared non-humans second class citizens, held the entire senate hostage until they signed a treaty, invaded Corroscant, and destroyed the Jedi Temple. Poverty rates were at an all time high, they forced certain species like Wookies into slavery. Basically, everyone hated these guys. The rebels WEREN'T terrorists just like the US Marine Corp isn't full of terrorists. These people declared a WAR, and they weren't committing acts of terror to scare people. That's what the EMPIRE was doing, they blew up a whole planet, and intended to blow up more. They used fear to keep people inline. The Alliance didn't kill innocents to state a message, but the Empire did.
    The economy crashed with the empire, and under a new system of government, it could heal again.

      Honestly, read Star wars infinities: a new hope.
      It is a book were the Empire defeats the Rebels.
      It clearly shows what the Empire was planning to do.
      Did they destroy more planets? Nope.
      Did they use it to terrorize planets? Nope.
      Did they use it as a weapon? Nope.
      They renamed it "The Justice Star" and put it in orbit around Coruscant as a symbol of peace and justice.
      The Justice Star quickly became the new Galactic Capital.
      That was until R2-D2 and Yoda hijacked it and crashed it into Coruscant, killing billions of innocent people in the process.
      That is exactly what the Empire was planning to do, as well as what the Rebels were planning to do if they lost.

    Yeah, it kinda needs to be said, after the destruction of Alderan The Empire's public support freaking PLUMMETED and a ton of people started supporting the Rebels, and that's not even getting into the fact that in the time between episodes 3 and 4 the Empire had put forth a number of policies that had already made it VERY unpopular.
    Basically, while no one liked the economic impact, the people shedding tears for the destruction of the Death Star were a vast minority.

If the Alliance were to capture one of these behemoths, we wouldn't have enough personnel to crew it." This was written shortly after the Battle of Endor. In a galaxy that numbers quadrillions of beings, I don't think a tiny group that can't even crew a vessel of 280,000 would be considered big, or popular. All-in-all, the Empire was actually quite popular with much of the galaxy. Don't believe rebel propaganda and lies.

      +Wh40kFinatic most of the core was in favor of it and a lot of the outer rim was ignored by the empire. the former separatist worlds hated it but they were bombed into the stone age so they dont really factor in.
      the empire was popular because the galaxy was desperate for law and order after the carnage of the clone wars (several planets were scorched in addition to the standard collateral damage) and the empire brought plenty of it. jedi were blamed for the war, the separatists were scapegoated and punished and the empire used pirates, separatist holdouts, and rebels as boogymen to keep the people scared (which wasnt a lie, a branch of the rebellion became extreme with the idea of using the imperial tactics of brutality against them)

      Chicken Fate, some planets can be a liability and only strain unnecessary resources from the Empire, this can be due to many reasons like constant unrest for example on a planet would require constant military intervention but abandoning the planet may be worse. But having a death star can solve that problem and considering the Empire has millions if planets blowing up a handful of the worst ones would rather strengthen the economy and public order.

      Any place can have a king or queen regardless of its purpose.
      Since we don't see or hear much of any political matters being settled on the planet it would most likely be for resources.

    In canon, the death star officially costs 1 trillion credits

    • @deadcurze
      @deadcurze 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Yeah, but Star Wars economics is egregiously nonsensical. A Imperial I-class Star Destroyer is priced at 150 million credits, according to Wookiepedia. To put that into perspective a "gartro egg omelet" at "Dex's Diner" costs7.5 credits, and Coruscant has over 1 trillion citizens. In other words, if 100 billion loyal Imperial Citizens (less that 1/10 of Coruscant's population, though one must consider that crime and poverty was rampant) would be willing to give up the value of a omelet each, the Empire could build 5000 Star Destroyers, or cover 75% of the Death Star's cost.
      ...
      That also means that the Empire could have built 6666 Star Destroyers instead of the Death Star. I'd love to see what 6666 Star Destroyers would do to the Resistance's meagre forces. (Or they could have just said "Fuck it, if you want Starfighters, we'll give you bloody Starfighter" and built ≈3.3 million Tie Defenders... which reminds me, Tie Defenders are only five times more expensive that the many times less effective standard TIE/LN, which makes their decison to focus on these inferior models all the more inexplicable, especially considering the fact that they faced mostly guerilla attacks, which advanced fighters with Hyperdrives would be far more adept at countering than Star Destroyers.)

      If the Death Star cost 193 quintillion dollars and also cost 1 trillion credits, we can assume that a (presumably American) dollar is worth around 193,000 credits. Which means that the aforementioned 'Garto Egg Omelette' would cost around 0.0000389 dollars, or around 0.00389 cents.
      Film Theory: How much money is Dex's Diner losing?
      Edit: I'm an idiot and got the exchange ratio wrong. 193,000 dollars to 1 credit is the correct exchange, and therefore the 'Garto Egg Omelette' should be worth $1,447,500 dollars.

    I see some faults with what you said in this video:
    1. The Death Star is not a landmark, it is a battle station. It cannot be compared to the World Trade Center, but to a military base, and since the Death Star was about to attack the rebels main base, it was pretty much a military base in Afghanistan. Taliban destroying a military base in Afghanistan is not an act of terror, but war. Or as the Joker put it: "No one bats an eye."
    2. Palpatines revolution from within didn't go smooth at all. First there where the clone wars, a galaxy wide total war many people in the galaxy suffered under. Then he killed all the Jedi, the greatest paragons of the Republic. Then, after he declared his empire, he enslaved many species like the Wookies or the Geonosians and declared pretty much all non-human species second class citisens.
    So even if the empire tries to pass off the destruction of the Death Star as a terrorist attack, most of the galaxy wouldn't listen.
    3. It is even questionable how much the overall populus of the galaxy knows about the Death Star. In the movie, many of the high ranking Imperials discuss that even having the Death Star is making many systems turn to the Rebels. Tarkin argues that fear will keep them in line, but with nothing to be afraid of, the Empire would be better off denying the Death Star ever existed in the first place.

      The rebels were a terrorist group. A well armed one, with good intentions, but a terror group nonetheless. Second, the Death Star was a massive military project. It would be more like ISIS destroying the Pentagon than the Taliban destroying an Afghan base. Third, remember all of Palpatine's evil dealings were done behind the scenes. To the public, the Jedi were a religious cult attempting to destroy democracy by assassinating the Supreme Chancellor, so when Order 66 was issued and the 501st marched on the Jedi Temple, in the eyes of the public they were defending peace and justice. This also applies to the attacks on Kashykk and other planets - they were huge reactions to small involvement, just like Bush with Iraq. Palpatine's speech abolishing the Republic and ushering in the Empire was applauded massively. The Galaxy willingly transformed from Republic to Empire. In comparison, the Galactic Civil War ended with a terror attack on a huge military celebration, followed swiftly by an invasion of the Mid Rim, then the Inner Rim, then The Core Worlds. The rebels were like every other terrorist revolutionary group - after winning, they loot and force people to fight for them.

    • @Terabiel
      @Terabiel 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +PhilisOzup by that logic, the American founders were terrorists too. Terrorists are not just anyone fighting the government. The Rebellion had openly declared war on the Empire, had it's own planets and bases and uniforms. It was an open, declared war, which makes it not a terrorist operation. The Rebellion is never seen murdering civilians to invoke terror.

    • @TheSorrel
      @TheSorrel 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      PhilisOzup A terrorist group has the goal of creating fear. Thats why they are called terrorists. A terrorist is someone who doesn't target military bases or strategic points, but innocent people. Killing soldiers in an open battle is war, killing civilians to intimidate their people is terrorism. Rebels are not terrorists.
      The Death Star was a military base in enemy territory manned by combatant forces. So no, its not like the pentagon.
      And finally, Bush never openly enslaved whole peoples or declared certain ethnic groups second class citisens. And people still hated him.

      Jen'Ari-Asha Not really. If you watch Rebels, which is canon, you see that most people honestly didn't like Imperial rule. The Empire ruled with an iron fist. They would kill any who did not fall in line in the streets, or send them off to prisons. The majority of alien races don't seem to like them at all, and even among humans there's a decent amount of dissension. People forget that the Empire only ruled for about 3 or 4 decades too. They didn't exactly have time to indoctrinate everyone. There are plenty of people who would have lived through all of the events leading up to the Empire's creation. Luke was born the same year the Empire was founded and he's not even in his 20's by the time of A New Hope. The Empire would have one, maybe two generations of kids that would be completely indoctrinated, and even they would likely have some older people in their lives trying to sway them. Hell, we see quite a few people (kids included) that turn on the Empire with little effort or proof just because someone tells them of the evils going on. If the Empire wasn't known for that sort of thing people probably wouldn't be so quick to believe the "lies" of rebels.

    Actually, at 9:28-9:35 when you talked about major world leaders being killed not stimulating the economy, I give you one Franz Ferdinand, assassinated in the early 1900's and whose death was the impetus for a world war, severely boosting the economy.
    Further, the industries involved were pre-paid for their services, not paid on debts. Still further, you're presuming that the Empire was a massive state market-style economy on a galaxy-wide level, rather than having that for only a very limited number of planets that were under the Emperor's direct control- those being the planets that fed Coruscant and Coruscant itself, which continued to operate just fine on switchover because the industrial complex of the Empire is and was, for the most part, autonomous from the government. Certainly there were taxes involved with licit trading arrangements, but removing those taxes only makes things easier to move things around, *stimulating* the economy. That's not even touching on the more draconian laws that Palpatine was instating, far different from his original methods of rule when he was originally nominated of, again, autonomy.

      *****
      It suffered a pretty bad economic drop because it dragged on too long so a lot of trade restrictions really kicked people in the ass, while various nations with relatively autonomous economies did rather well, actually. For example, look at Canada over the last recession.
      As for your usage of the Wall Street Crash of 1929, you'd be wrong, actually. The economy was still going very strong- so strong, in fact, that it actually caused a market glut because consumption was reduced (since, y'know, no longer wartime). People still acted like it wasn't and built a bubble around it with speculative stock, and fucked everything over by being greedy about it- just like the Dot Com Bubble and the Housing Market Bubble.
      Thoughtful Insanity Not at all, because it IS a lot of lost productivity and resources that have just gone to waste, which is a pretty big negative- but it's all been paid for already, and there isn't any design to produce more than the one (until, well, after the first was blown up...) so it wouldn't be a continuous source of economic stimulus aside from the issue of supplies (which would be relatively minor). That, again, doesn't even touch upon the aspects of how Palpatine being dead positively affects the planets formerly within the Empire, so as such it would be an overall net positive gain, even with that negative involved. There were two concepts being addressed there, the first about the Death Star and the second about the Emperor himself. Thus why two paragraphs.

      It makes all sense. Donald Trump is part of the republic, which is the original glory of America, and when he said he's going to bring the old freedom and glory to America, he meant the sith, that's why he must be part of the illuminati, the grey original siths, and he hired Isis, the first order siths. Hillary Clinton is Rey,Obama is Finn, John f Kennedy is Han, John's wife is Leia, George Washington is Luke, John's assassin is Ben Solo, Hitler is Darth Vader, his wife is Pademe,Boba Fett is the leader of Isis, and finally, Chewbacca is of course John Cena
