I dont remember how i got here. I went down a TH-cam guitar rabbit hole. I was watching channels with literally hundreds of thousands more subscribers(Andertons, Chappers, Wildwood etc). And this video is the 1st that actually amazed me. I realized at one point my mouth was actually open in awe. I sincerely hope you are teaching someone and passing down your skills because they are obviously immense and should be preserved for future generations. Amazing job, cant wait to watch more.

Thank you very kindly my friend. I wish I could get someone interested in doing this type of work. I think the two issues are I live in a very remote location. And I've only recently been able to afford to add some help. Thank you very much for watching. I hope you continue to do so.

Oh how I wish you had shown how you cut the neck with the truss rod still in place! I have a simular break on a les paul and it simulary has been poorly repaired before, the glue used looks simular to the glue in the video, it looks like it's porus and has small air pockets in it. The repair you've done making it in essence a scarf joint is amazing!

Good job, Jerry! That solution never came to my mind before seeing it

Amazing work. I kept thinking that headstock piece was too long but when you got it all together and got finish on it, it looks perfect.

absolutely amazing work. i can't believe how you got that right in 3 pieces. no adjustments on bridge? unbelievable! you really know your stuff!! i had a new head stock made for a 1968 Gibson s.g. by tay tay & son on long island n.y 20 years ago. i was impressed by how the old man rebuilt in 1 piece a headstock to neck but you did it in 3 pieces? dam ..... if you have a inlay face & want to save it just soak in water overnight. it peels off & you can glue it to a new piece. thats how mine was done. may save alot of time .. awesome work !

Really great fix, I perfectly know how horrible it is when your beloved instrument falls accidently and got broken in pieces it happen to my 1932 National Duolian and I was devastated ! Luckily Mr Mike Lewis the resonator specialist from Fine Resophonic fixed it beautifully llike you did it with this nice Gibson so it's really wonderful Hats off Sir !

I have been binge watching headstock repairs for the last day... Of all the repairs I've watched this is by far the most fascinating one! Exemplary Craftsmanship good sir! Had she been my guitar I would've had it simply clearcoated to show off the repair. 😊

You definitely do excellent work! I know this is an older video but the information is still relevant. Many people dont realize the amount of labor that goes into a repair of this magnitude. Plus the level of patience that is necessary. With gluing a neck, you definitely have to wait for the glue to cure completely before moving to the next step, because once that neck is under string tension it can pull a repair apart very easily if the neck isnt 100% cured. Acoustic guitars tend to have twice the pull force on their neck as compared to an electric guitar. This can be close to 200 pounds. This was and is a great example of what a little hard work and patience can do. It's always nice to see an old vintage guitar being resurrected and brought back to being playable again.

As a general rule I hate scarf joints, but here we go with another repair where someone has just completely messed things up and you have to go in and try to make a silk purse from a sows ear. This was an amazing repair on an instrument worth fixing.

Inspiring repair. Very well done to just insert that new block... wow! You weren’t kidding when you said that most any guitar is repairable. When I was young my folks restored old furniture and enlisted me to carve new inserts to match existing, so this has a touch of nostalgia for me too. This is how its done when its done well. Thanks for the video!

Absolutely fantastic. I just dropped off my 6 months old 2020 $2000.00 Gibson Les Paul Classic Cherryburst Guitar to a local Luthier today because last night I back into my guitar which was sitting on a guitar stand instead of hanging up on a string swing or in its case, knocked it over and flat, face first on the hard wood floor of my home studio, snapping the head stock completely off from the neck...after contemplating suicide for a few minutes following the shocking sight of one of my three beloved Gibson Les Pauls decapitated on the floor, I gathered myself together and started searching for a guitar repair shop near by. After talking to several people I finally found someone who says he can remedy my problem, I just hope he is as good as you are, if so, I will be reunited with one of my sweethearts soon again...lol

Had a white SG headstock repaired a couple of years ago. It had cracked open with a light bump against a mike stand during a gig. I asked for a "brutal repair", and brutal is what I got. The guitar was recent and painted white, and the top of the headstock wasn't broken. The luthier glued it with back together with epoxy and routed 2 thin channels parallel to the truss-rod up into the headstock to insert and epoxy glue 2 graphite plates from around the 4th fret down to the nearly the top of the headsock, then painted and finished it back to the guitar's original appearance.
I suppose it was a bit overkill, but that headstock will never break again unless you attack it with a sledgehammer or some sort of a power-tool.
I sold that SG and replaced it with a second hand ESP LTD Viper 1000 Deluxe with Seymour Duncan PUs which I found by chance while shopping around, and which sounds, plays and sustains like an absolute dream, and has all the features I ever dreamed of when I was playing the SG. I never thought I would switch from Gibson to some "obscure" brand of guitar, and I don't know if all the ESP LTD guitars are built with the same quality 'cause I'm a player and I just need a couple of guitars which suit to my hands, and I'm not a collector nor a compulsive buyer, but I guess I was lucky with that peculiar guitar (at least luckier than with the SG).

As I wind my way through all your excellent videos, I seldom have any criticisms, and never any criticism of your actual work, but on this one, I was very disappointed to not see how you clamped the new piece of wood. I could almost visualize the clamping of the plug to the headstock, but not the other joint. It would seem like the clamping of those glue joints were so absolutely critical to the strength of the repair that it should have been shown in some detail. Also, you never showed how you dealt with the truss rod. I salute you for your "grande cojones" for taking on this repair!

Thanks for sharing this gem of a fix with us Jerry! It absolutely belongs with all your other videos.
In your opinion, what causes weak, easily broken glue joints? I mean wood joints... I know I make 'em and I want to really fix my kitchen chairs! Don't worry, I have no desire to EVER glue a musical instrument! 8-)

What a great repair! I'd bet all other luthiers would run away from that one. My dad and I did a similar fix years ago on a banjo. We also used mahogony, also made a new head for it all as one piece.

First I cringed at the damage.. then after the piece was glued in and sanded and shaped I knew it was the right way to go. The original break de-valued the guitar and after that anything to get it playing again could be done. Great job! A great ol' guitar like this need to play on again.

I didn't see the truss rod cavity cut out - lots of stain on the front, and the truss rod cover replaced in the final job, but exposing the truss rod nut? That would have been interesting to see.

If you look early on theres a small hole in the top of the section he clued in. When he drilled the truss rod channel in guessing it probably was only 2mm or so from being Ann the way through and that the top was cut out with the whittling knife

You did a fine job of carving that neck good as new again. From just a little ways away you cant really tell it had been repaired. nice. The Gibson acoustic guitar is starting to grow on me wish I could find one someday for a good deal. I m not very good at playing but I amuse my self. I enjoy low action playing guitars to play around on. Well who dont LOL. The glue if done right is stronger than wood is what they say. I dont know if that is true.

    • @RosaStringWorks
      @RosaStringWorks  6 ปีที่แล้ว

Thought you were dead in the water at first glance. Impressive job on the neck. You didn’t show nut slot install did it intonate? String action ok or did you have to do some bridge or saddle work? I know you said that was early video however, a great job. Thought it was a going to be a birdhouse at the start. Thanks this was like reading a good mystery novel. Not trying to be a troll but you do such wonderful work however, color matching finish is not your strongest skill. Getting some color lacquer in the shop would help. At any rate you are a gifted man. May God Bless you.
