We wouldn't have gotten Green, but we wouldn't have gotten Pinkerton 2. A very consistent theme with Rivers Cuomo is that he hates doing the same thing. Maladroit is the opposite of Green is the opposite of Pinkerton is the opposite of Blue. OK Human is the opposite of Van Weezer is the opposite of Black is the opposite of White. If Pinkerton had been more successful, we probably would have still gotten something like the Green sound, just played less safe and with more emotional lyrics.
@@TheRenegade... I'm glad someone shares my same take on Weezer. Rivers likes being weird with his songs and experiments a whole lot. No album is consistent with the last, and I find that awesome about them; it's an adventure along River's experiments.
I don't think so Rivers said that he didn't like the direction they were going by that time and he basically just did it out of depression. If Pinkerton was succesful the band would most likely have a break or just seize to exist
@@certifiedgoofer there are so many songs that would be fantastic and fun remade like this, I'm thinking it would be fun to hear their interpretation of "This is Such a Pity" from Make Believe.
@@Textile_Courtesan You can check out Tell Me What You Did. Its demo that got changed into This Is Such A Pity. It really feels like its from Pinkerton.
On one hand, I respect Rivers need to evolve as an artist. On the other I'd listen to way more Weezer if it sounded like this lol. This is fucking amazing! Just adding heavy guitars is one thing this is so much more than that!
The story about this version is that Rivers spent his 1995 vacation on an island. He forgot all of his problems for a little bit and had the time of his life :) also there were japanese girls there
I'd put the vocals WAY lower in the mix to make it more accurate but the instrumental is on point. the solo goes criminally hard. also love that little superfriend synth before the second verse.
make the drum compression way less obvious. i don't remember pumping on pinkerton drums. you can have leveling and distortion without the giveaway compression sound. the drum reverb needs to come more from the room mics. if you are using hall or basic room reverbs, its not gonna be right. if your drum app or verb plugin doesn't have good room options, explore other plugins designed to make room reverbs. rVerb from waves was good for this, but i've seen some recent free ones watch how much/little high end you end up with, I think you could get closer to pinkerton if you make sure your ears are fresh and you AB your mix against it. And make sure you have a few different speakers to listen on
I think I get what your saying. I applied the limiter accross the whole drum track, but with my next recording I'm just putting it on the room and it sounds more balanced. My hearing is a little messed up from all the concerts and I only own one set of speakers, so I usually end up cranking the high end too much. I'll spend a bit more time ABing for the next one.
Wow. Wait til Rivers hears this. Bet he'll dig it... So interested in how you made this! I think you could do an entire video series on just the creative process of your compositions. Well done!!! 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏 =w=
This kicks major ass but its just not pinkerton with those squeaky clean green vocals, pinkerton needs those raw vocals with brian singing background in the studio alongside rivers instead of dubbing him in in post
O Girlfriend could be good this style too. I had thought about doing it myself before. Good work! I love the guitar work. The drum mixing isn’t quite right but it works well enough. The actual Pinkerton drums don’t have that pumpy of compression. They are still compressed and quite distorted too, especially on certain tracks. But the cymbals don’t pump that extreme. I would be willing to do a mix of this to get it closer(I’m a mix engineer). Let me know.
Yeah, you could give the mix a shot. Drums are not my area of expertise, so I just cranked the limiter to make them sound big. It's effective but also sort of a cheap trick

Yo... I think this channel is a GREAT idea. Would love to hear all of Green Album "Pinkertonized."... and then like every studio album that has followed. My two cents... don't rely too much on arrangement elements/sounds that repeat something very specific that we can hear directly on Pinkerton. Better approach... what if each song is somehow an 11th song on Pinkerton that fully complements the rest. Hope this is taken as constructive criticism, cos man I really dug your re-imagining of "Island" and will def be checking out your other uploads.
Constructive criticism is great. I'm not a professional so I'll take any friendly advice. I did lean pretty hard into the cliches to drive the point home on this song (intro is Pink Triangle, verse 1 is Tired of Sex mixed with Thrown it All Away). And Weezer does this too, for example Surf Wax and Holiday have the same type of bridge. Undone, Lisa and No Other One have a guitar solo up a minor 3rd. Mykel & Carli and In the Garage have the harmonica intro. Buddy Holly and Holiday have the mini guitar solo after chorus 1. It's a difficult balancing act to use enough weezerisms to make it sound like a real Weezer song, but not so many that it sounds like parody. Anyway, I'll try to be a little less obvious in the future 😁
@@AlmostWeezer Very impressive regardless! What software are you using? I'd love to know what your general approach is to this. I used to be a decent amateur recording/mixing engineer of my own stuff, but pretty rusty now.
