It's without a doubt the best cycling day out we've ever had, there's just so much history to see along the route and the scenery is beautiful! Have a lovely weekend 😊👍
What always amazes me is how many tunnels are on British railways. Between Buxton and Bakewell there are a lot. My wife and I have done this ride. Was great. For comparison in the US there is only one tunnel between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh and it goes through mountains 4x as high as Kinder Scout in Derbyshire. Between NYC and Chicago there is only one short (tunnel) on the Hudson River.section.
Yes there really is so many railway tunnels around this area, that's why we love it! Where we live in Norfolk we literally only have 1 standard guage railway tunnel and that was barely 50 metres long! It's such a treat to get to see them and the Monsal Trail is amazing for so many reasons as I'm sure you know.. Thanks for watching Paul 😊 👍
I had done a D of E training trip to this spot so this video brings back a decent few memories. It really goes to show that the world can have its problems but places like these never change. Never flaw.
We love Derbyshire and this is one of our favourite places. The Monsal Trail really was the highlight of our trip up there having wanted to cycle it for many years.. Its such a beautiful, unspoilt place.. Glad it brought back some nice memories for you, thanks for watching 😊
We were expecting a nice easy ride with it all being fairly flat but were certainly shattered afterwards, clearly not as fit as we had thought but still a beautiful ride.. Thanks for watching 👍😊
This video is brilliant! You do such an incredibly good job with the filming and the history of the places you stop at, plus watching the two of you is a delight. Thank you and well done!
Thank you so much, we are really glad you are enjoying our videos, it's always nice to receive positive comments from people and we really do appreciate it 😊
That's very good thanks for posting. You both answered several questions I had about the trail. I wanted to see the Tunnels section mainly - especially the longest section. I don't have the mobility to explore such places or the Fells etc, and this allows me to do it Virtually. All the best you two..
@@ExploringWithEmAndStu You're welcome. For long distances, I drive and/or use my wheelchair, but I'd love to do that one in a proper rough terrain 'Trail Wheelchair'? IS there such a thing?
@@ExploringWithEmAndStu When my back is OK to travel, my German Shepherd likes to pull me around here and there (to the shops etc). But it would be a good promotion of such tails to open them out more to special chairs. It's not just for cyclists and walkers. I think I'll explore that a bit.
Well from memory there's a carpark at the Buxton end of the trail I think its actually in Blackwell and I believe there's a bit of a sleep slope at the beginning but the rest of the trail is relatively flat so it might be feasible for a wheelchair user 👍
4 questions if you could help that would be great. 1) Is this trail 100% off road? 2) where's the best place to park at the start? 3) where's the best place for some dinner? 4) is it an easy ride doing it there and back in a day no problem? Thinking of cycling it with my wife and 2 kids. great video, love the relaxed approach, we do a lot of cycling close by but would love to get out on off rd easy routes to widen our choices.
Hi there.. I'll answer all you're questions the best we can.. Yes as far as I can remember its all along a bridal path and no road cycling needed.. we park at the pay and display car park just west of Blackwell Mill, its quite popular especially in high season so arrive as early as you can.. Some of the old station buildings along the route are now Cafés where you can get some food or a short ride into Bakewell at the end will give you plenty of food options but we've always taken a packed lunch to be on the safe side.. The whole route is relatively flat with a slight gravely surface in areas so best for either mountain or hybrid bicycles, preferably not thin road tires.. There's always been plenty of young families cycling it when we've been and dispite us not being particularly fit we managed it in an afternoon including stopping for breaks and photos along the way.. Hope that all helps abit, any further questions please feel free to ask. Its a beautiful route and definitely work the effort.. Thanks for watching 😊
This is amazing mate. Love to see these Lime kilns this was a really nice watch. Massive thumbs up from me again. done a line kiln few month back they are class. top video as always guys. Looks like yous had an amazing day out. 👍👍👍👍👍

Great wee trip guys and enjoyed the history, Looked like a popular track! What i wanna know is, if you went to bakewell, how did you manage to fit all the tarts into your backpack!? Think i would have needed a trailer behind my bike 😋 Thanks for sharing, Kris.
As this was double track line in the old days its ashame one side isn't preserved railway for steam trains and the other line the path as a shared route. Im modeling this Midland Railway line in My house probably the most scenic railway line in all of England.
Yes its certainly the most beautiful old train line we've ever been too, would be nice to see steam train running along there again but also retain a path for the walkers 👍
@@ExploringWithEmAndStu There is a similar situation in the United States @ the Western Maryland Scenic Railway. The tracks were kept but later used for Steam and several years later a fence went down the middle and the other side was made available to bikers and walkers. It seems to work out well and no one has ever been injured. As tourist trains run rather slow "if" there was a derailment the odds of any real injuries would be almost next to none unless it was due to someone jumping the fence as a train came. Then we know what could happen then but that would be their fault for trespassing. I'd love to see it happen and the Peak Rail line restored in a similar fashion. The scenery is just breathtakingly gorgeous and would be good for business, tourism, and tax revenue.
@@grumpy-dad3701 Obviously everyone is different in terms of fitness and stamina but I wouldn't say the Monsal trail on its own is not going to be anywhere near enough. It's only 8.5 miles. So if you did there and back should take about 3 hours max including stops if you are dawdling. Think you'd have a long day at camp I reckon. You'd be better off combining it with the Tissington trail (13 miles) and/or high peak trai (17.5 miles some of which is shared with the Tissington trail).
I cycled this ride in May this year 2021. Its a superb ride. Great film. All of it most familiar.
Thank you for watching...and yes it's an amazing ride and place 🙂

I did this ride on my bike. The full distance. For a 66 year old in good health I was happily pooped when I arrived home. It's a great ride.
