    1) Gardening makes me happy and now that I am retired, I have all the time I need.
    2) Last year’s garden was 5300 sq ft. It produced a lot of food and was my solace in getting through the COVID lockdown!
    3) Years of seed-saving, combined with a health “seed stash”, meant we had what we needed when seeds sold out. The “stash” also allowed us to help out some of our neighbors and co-workers who could not get seeds.
    4) You were “spot on” in advising viewers to assess NEEDS vs WANTS in what is grown. In the final analysis, we had enough tomatoes, rutabagas, kohlrabi, peas, beans, fava, and amaranth. Cool temps resulted in crop failures for peppers, melons, and eggplant. We did not plant enough onions, garlic, lettuce, carrots cucumbers, and radishes. I enjoy squash and went a little overboard. We shared fruits with several people and are still swimming in the stuff!
    5) This year, the garden is being expanded to 6400 sq ft. So excited! Can’t wait to get started!
Best wishes from Kate in Olympia, WA - 1/28/2021.

At least I am not the only one who can go to a store and end up buying duplicate seeds. This year I got a bonus from the leeks I planted the previous fall. I let some go to seed and add color since some blossoms were pink. When I the seed pods were aged enough. I noticed that the leeks produced cloves. That was my first time growing them, and most people kill them off before they even seed. At least now I have some leek cloves growing in the house for Chives and thousands of leek seeds. I look forward to growing plants outside to, but for now I will grow inside.

I will be beginning my planning the week after Christmas, with a garden calendar and my seeds. I decided to take the week off to do this and some re-organizing to make space for indoor seed starting. I have saved the videos I need for instructions and refreshers. Then it is a matter of waiting for the time to be right for each step in my zone 5a environment.

It's July, we're well into the season, and our garden is by far doing better than it ever has... but it's still not much. I'm hoping that if I start educating myself and prepping now, that I'll be ready to start the needed prep work this fall to get us off to the right start for next season. we have a very good 50'x50' plot with excellent light, good soil, water piped to it, and I built a small greenhouse a few years ago. but we've always lost steam and fallen behind every year due to a lack of time.
Now I have more time, and a more pressing need to provide food. let's learn and grow!

Thank you so much for this great video. I've bought 90% of my seeds for the whole year of 2021. After watching your video I sat down with a tablet sheet and drew all the areas that I have available for either in ground planting or container planting and used your information from the video and sat down with my seeds that I have and figured out what, where and how many of my spring vegetables, fruit and flowers will be plant and where they will go. For me, planning begins in the early fall by making a list of things I would have liked to grow, and different varieties of things I did grow that didn't produce as well as expected. Also, I locate the sellers of seeds that are hard to find and have that list ready by October before new seed catalogs are coming out. I can place orders early (as soon as available). That's how I finally snagged a couple packets of Ajvarski pepper seeds and Jet Star tomato seeds a few weeks ago.

While a bag of potatoes is super cheap compared to the future constant supply of peppers or tomatoes that will grow from those plants, a potato plant in the window in winter uses it's stored energy to grow while the other plants are dormant due to lack of winter light. Of course the potatoes will be replaced in the window when the planting time for the other plants arrives, but it's also good to get some green in the window in December, and things like potatoes and carrots break down into perfect soil in a relatively short time~

Excellent topics @Gardener Scott, and thanks for the reminders. I've learned many of these things over the years, yet I'm still sometimes forgetful about previous years, i.e. I grew too much of this or not enough of that.
As for store-bought potatoes, they might be cheap, but I always grow a lot & almost never have to buy them. Home grown is soooo much better.
Same with tomatoes. At the end of the season I take cuttings from my best plants & stick them in solo cups in my garden window. I've got more than enough plants now for the coming year's crop, plenty of plants to give to family, friends & neighbors. 😊

Hi Scott! My Idaho area is zone 6a and we've been fortunate to have great weather for at least 3 years now. I have planted veggies my family loves and some that they won't eat regularly. I've reduced my varieties from the past and have added some new veggies that seem to fill in the gap. We preserve our veggies and I gauge our usage by watching the rows of jars that are used and those not used. Even fruit which is a sweet favorite sometimes sits unused for months just because our taste buds are seasonal and some things are not on the list. Example is a good pot of chili beans in the fall or winter vs. the hot summer. I like your channel. Straight to the point.

I want all the garden spaces to have at least a few food plants in them during the winter, and I don't want to strip the garden bare to call it "cleaned up". In general, our collective instincts are geared for the act of gardening instead of for the places we call gardens, which we often don't consider, but it makes the entry fee into gardening steeper than it should be~

It depends on whether there were other squash plants in the area. If the banana squash was the only squash variety in the garden, it should be pure. But if there were any other squash plants, the likelihood of cross pollination is high.

Unless you really need raised/edged beds--like you're on solid stone--the only thing these beds do is make your life harder, for just about everything. This includes planning crops and support systems and watering. It is much easier to keep planting more crops, when you havent boxed yourself in from the get go. The boxes are deceptively "nice" but are an ongoing expense and reduce rather than increase yield.
Good planting plans cater to the family's needs and wants, and provide a steady yield, as well as periodic glut of certain veggies that produce all at once. If you start with boxes dictating planting, you arent able to be flexible. After all the expense and trouble of setting up boxes, you still have to bend into them and cant really use any weeding or other tools. The boxes harbor snails and slugs, and in a few years rot, thanks to the copious amounts of watering necessary to keep the soil/media moist.
Sorry if this is a bit of a rant against boxes but, your whole planning thing is starting with the most expensive and complicated way to get less than good results.
