That mechanism is used in metal cutting machines like shaper machine. Return stroke is always non cutting stroke so u can increase the feed. This reduces the cycle time.
If I'd learned trig by other than rote, I could tell you that this is the product of sine over something else. But I didn't and have to go back to the books every time.

No. The return stroke does no productive work. Do is as quickly as possible and get back to work.
the name of the mechanism is Qiuck Return mechanism...which signifies that the return stroke is quicker than the forward stroke.
