      Tbh, I wish the japanese reporters where asking in english and then having Yuzuru asking them to speak in japanese so, at least we could understand a little bit what they are asking and we don't have to deal with a pitfull translator (even though I know that live translation is hard because I have done it and I don't want to shame anyone).
      Anyway, I totally agree with you 😄😄😄😂

      @@krypton_griffin using your own words isnt actually wrong as long as it makes what it's being said come natural in your language (literal translations sometimes sound really off) but if you miss the message, then you have messed up. Badly.

      @@4u4aBY Yuzu noticed that important things, such as struggle with Otonal or admiration to Johnny Wier, were ignored and not translated to English. So, he decided to answer in both Japanese and English to deliver his thoughts, I believe. He always choose his words very carefully and wisely when he answers in Japanese, FYI.

    Yuzu at 6:04 (with a bit more details and some more later)
    “This program is my own after all. I have skated and will be skating this numerous times at competitions...This may not be a conventional way of looking at a skate program but for me it feels like it’s wine or cheese. The more I skate, and as time passes, the maturer or deeper it becomes. That is how I see it and that is why it fits who I am. That is the number one reason why I can immerse myself in it; I can layer my feelings on it. I decided to perform Otonal because I watched it performed by Johnny Weir whom I always aspire to be, and maybe because that aspiration was so strong it didn’t become my own. “
    (The question was : You said when you were performing Otonal you had to think a lot but today you did not think anything during the performance. What is that?)
    Yuzu’s Japanese answer at the beginning which was not translated:
    Today I felt really good. I was able to resonate myself with the music successfully, and while I was skating I once again felt that figure skating was so much fun.
    PS
    It sounds like the interpreter was filling in for someone else? He briefly said this (figure skating?) is not his area and apologised for it. Maybe it was not his choice to be there either...^ - ^

    • @c.r.i.s
      @c.r.i.s 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Probably it wasn't his choice or at least, I want to hope so. Usually you shouldn't accept jobs that surpass your area of expertise but well, it's not like it's forbidden. Maybe he was the only choice left as a filler?

    • @thegreatwhiteway
      @thegreatwhiteway 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Just a tiny correction: He said "It's like a wine or cheese."

    • @hbattagl
      @hbattagl 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      thegreatwhiteway Ah, now it makes more sense! Thank you very much! ^ - ^ I hope such jobs as translation receive more attention by ISU, as it really represents their professionalism. Then again, despite their plan to hold next year’s Four Continents in Sydney, Australia is getting NO coverage of these. I simply couldn’t believe it. 😭

      @pennyinheaven 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Question, how was Yuzu's translation of his answers? Was he able to translate them exactly how he said it in Japanese? I don't mean or mind the grammar but the content. He might've skipped some just to express the important points of his answer. I'm just curious. But I'd say he tried his best and it was good.

    • @thegreatwhiteway
      @thegreatwhiteway 4 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      @@pennyinheaven His translation was not "word for word" translation of his answer in JPN. I do respect his own translation, but just for the sake of EN fan who'd like to understand Yuzu's thoughts more, here is the "word for word" translation for the section starting at 10:13:
      Question: What you got from the program change?
      Yuzu: "What I got the most was that I was able to do my own skate again. I think there are experiences or happiness that I can get by doing this program in a competition, so I’m glad that I continued to do skating and that I was able to do my own performance that I could feel “this is me!” by changing my program.”

    As a Chinese speaker, I feel so sad that a tremendous amount of interesting Boyang comments are lost in the translation... same goes for Yuzu stretching his English translation abilities to the utmost... • @celiaakemi2329
      @celiaakemi2329 4 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Jiawen Mao - I agree with you. It was shameful not to have a competent translator. Sometimes Yuzuru for not trusting the translator, had to use his limited English so that they would not translate wrong . The same happened with Jin Boyang and you could see Jason Brown s distress.

      @The Cløwn 這個問題也問天天,就是你剛剛也有提到你最近正在練後內四嗎,來這次比賽之前你是怎麼決定這次比賽要上多少個,還有多少種四週?就包括各種跳躍是怎麼去安排的?
      Question:To all three skaters... This question is also for TianTian(nickname of Boyang Jin). As you have mentioned that you are training 4S, so how do you decide how many and what kind of quads to do here before the competition? Also how do you plan your layout of the jumps?
      I'm not a native English speaker, maybe there are some grammatical mistakes

    • @k.y.cheung3221
      @k.y.cheung3221 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@pennyinheaven 這些四週就是在上個比賽結束後,然後就是一定要加的。我覺得我本來就有的,然後希望能夠在自由滑當中很好的把這些四週跳全部都拿出來比賽當中。由於後內四週對我來說是四週裏頭最不容易的一個,但是也不是比勾手四週會很難,因為我覺得這個後內四週比勾手四週會稍為難一些,然後它在第二個跳,所以說我在訓練當中不得不克服,然後希望能夠在比賽當中能夠很好的完成。
      These quads must be added after last competition ended. I think I already have it. I hope I can do all of them in fs perfectly. As 4S is the most difficult quad for me, but it isn't very difficult when compare with 4lz. Because I think 4S is a bit more difficult than 4lz(he repeat this statement again), and it is the second jumping pass, therefore I have to overcome it. I hope I can do it perfectly in fs.

    @kaoris_jdc 4 ปีที่แล้ว +34

    Being a Japanese-English interpreter myself, I felt so bad that Yuzuru was literally forced to translate everything by himself. Yes, his English has gotten so much better, considering he didn't understand his coach at all when he moved to Canada, but still, he should have had a better interpreter who could convey his beautiful thoughts that he expressed in Japanese into English properly.
    The interpreter did an extremely, incredibly poor job, he ignored almost everything Yuzuru said, and he wasn't even taking notes properly which is necessary for a consecutive interpretation (or maybe he was, on his smartphone somehow, which is really a wired way, but he just simply didn't understand what Yuzuru said?).
    He said he's not a specialized interpreter (when he asked a lady to repeat her question in Japanese), but then why couldn't the ISU official prepare a proper interpreter?
    I'm not specialized in figure skating either, but even I could do a better interpretation... :(
    Sorry Yuzuru, but everybody knows that your skating was incredible. That's what matters.

It seems that the man doesn't have much experience interpreting, he was trying to rely whatever he could catch but a lot of information got lost, such as Yuzu mentioning Johnny Weir and many other things. So many thoughts on this press con. I'm so happy seeing Boyang!!! And Jason just being such a sweetheart! I'm so happy that three of them are together. As usual, Yuzu's getting all the questions, I get that he did so well (and thank you for the translator/s, Yuzu's English was again put to test) but come on, it's so disrespectful for the other skaters to stay there like sitting ducks. Should the press be notified about etiquette or something?
    And the translator/s. What happened? Why didn't they hire capable translators for Boyang and Yuzu? I was cringing so bad. He had to request the press to translate their own question and a Chinese press corrected him. What was the other girl doing? 🤦‍♀️
    And Yuzu skating Chopin and Seimei for the skater he is now and skating more for his redemption as a skater, less about the points or the rank, just made all of my assumptions on him correct. 😌

    • @MonBriella
      @MonBriella 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Actually it's not disrespectful for other skaters to ask to one single skater the questions. Basically what you are saying it's "u should support all the skaters in the same way" like NO. That's clearly an utopia. Also he's not skating for redemption as you say, he's skating for himself now. It took a while for him to realize that skating for himself and as himself is the most important.

    • @pennyinheaven
      @pennyinheaven 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@MonBriella I did miss saying "for himself". Through the broken English, Yuzu doubted himself as a skater so now he has finally redeemed himself as a skater. Thus him saying "I can (finally) say 'I am a skater'".
      Edit: Reading my post, I did mention "his redemption". The performance is for himself.
      To me, they can show how much they favor Yuzu but still acknowledge the other skaters. They don't have to go gaga over the others, just make them feel that are skaters too.

      Bigger, I'd say. Yuzuru has way more fans than Jordan. Yuzu has groupies like the rockstar he is. Hordes of Yuzu's fans aren't only figure skating fans. And hordes are only fans of HIS figure skating and will watch no other. Yuzu is a gift to humanity. His skating is what draws people in and shows them who he is but the love that holds them to him is for the man he is.

  • @tessmargauxhelen3035

    No! He not translated all very important thoughts Yuzu had. Therefore he wanted to answer both Japanese and English.
    Btw. Yuzuru has always careful behavior even when he answer even with Japanese language. Long pauses because he want to be sure that his answers are so correctly out spoked it's only possible.
    Yuzu has always been like this.
    His English is very good and I'm really impressed. 😁💚💚💚✌

      c.r.i.s Rguez yeah I mean using a cell phone with two fingers occasionally tapping on it plus the laughter makes you feel that, he really didn’t take it seriously. Not interpreting well was okay, but at least just try a bit

    • @c.r.i.s
      @c.r.i.s 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@krypton_griffin yes, precisely. I havent watched it yet but it just feels unprofessional by all the comments. My interpreting teachers always preferred the use of notebooks for taking notes as well as having any vocabulary you may need on paper. We only were allowed our phones once in the lab bcs the computers where we could see the vocabulary werent working. But that was on the lab, where no one was watching. Definitely in a conference, it looks bad bcs you can get the feel that they're not paying attention. Even worse if you laugh when you are not supposed to... Idk, I'm quite scared to watch the conference just for the interpreters' messes
