I don’t think the majority will get what I’m referencing but this gives me BIG BIG Penelope and Colin vibes.
He’s always saying and doing things that make you question his feelings towards Penelope but then he does stuff like when he said he swore off women for the time being and Penelope replied “well I’m a women” and he replied “you don’t count, your my friend” but then he says and does things that contradict his statements i being only friends.
As viewers we see it as an obvious fact he does have romantic feelings but Penelope as a character is told over and over by my mother, siblings and pretty much everyone else that he would never feel anything for her and calling him a friend is even a stretch.
So while everyone tells her without her asking people at the random decide to remind her so while he makes gestures and that contradicts that she believes she’s probably over thinking it because she and us as viewers are the only ones who take notice.
It’s such a sad loneliness when you experience something like this, you wage an internal battle over what the truth is and you know you can only know by asking but asking may very well ruin the relationship between you two and now you wage a battle on if it’s worth it or not and what the likelihood is the person will feel the same. The more insecure you are the harder the battle becomes and the more embarrassed you become and feel if you talk to anyone they will just laugh at you or not understand why you can’t just ask.
In a way you can but the social, and mental aspects make it more difficult to impossible. You have to completely disregard all your instincts and emotions but that’s damn near impossible in that type of situation.
When you really really think about it or experience it you see how actually devastating and lonely it really is and it can actually change a person for better or worse.
