If memory serves, the factory manual on the Buick engines required a retorque of the heads as part of the1,000-mile service on new cars. I can't remembers if that model required a check of valve lash at 1,000 miles. I imagine that requirement would be needed on a rebuild also. I was a young mechanic in the early sixties and stopped turning wrenches in the mid-seventies after putting myself through college. I would suggest checking the head bolts on the other cylinder bank. I have seen those valve covers destroyed by people being too aggressive on tightening those bolts. Old AMC V8's, (287 and 327) valve covers.
