This drama really isn’t letting Sun Xiang win anything. Not being mean or anything, but in the novel, he did won some of the matches and did not get portrayed as a total antagonist. I want him to fall harder not lighter.

They wanted to make his character easier to understand, I guess. In the novel, it sorta sounded like his seniors were basically overinflating his head when he first got his captain position. And later with Samsara he started actually working with his team and character.
He's not meant to be a total antagonist, but he's just a kid that had an overinflated ego and the Jia Shi (Excellent Era) manager was greedy so he chose to replace Ye Xiu with Sun Xiang, along with the battle mage card. He just is overeager to try to prove himself, considering the shadow he's constantly under. He's not a bad kid, just needs proper guidance, and when he went to Lun Hui (Samsara) he finally learned how to look at the big picture and how this isn't a game for one.
The thumbnail made me thought for seconds : "did yang yang switch role to zheng shuang to watch the seniors' last basketball match?"
I imagined how to render the 3D animation, while I was just learning how to make donuts in a 3D application 🤣🤣🤣
