Nice bit of kit, I've bought the PV2+ with HD 1080p built-in camera. The quality looks great, I can't wait until it arrives. In the meantime I will be practising on the Hubsan mini quad.
Hey Simon. Currently setting up a Phantom to do some real estate shots. I'm utterly impressed that you're still responding to your comments below. So thank you in advance. So, have you continued to be impressed by this FPV/Telemetry setup? I'll likely go with this (unless otherwise recommended) and transplant it onto a heavy-lift octo later. Also, what's the cable going from the Mark II to landing gear?
Nice setup I have the black pearl for my phantom 1 and immersion 600mhz transmitter with skew planer on transmitter and one the the black pearl getting 900m range but would be best with a helical on the black pearl for longer range
Nice install. The DJI video tx is a little bulky but I see it has a fan which accounts for some of that bulk. Most don't have fans. All you really need for 1km range is a pair of skew planer antennas one in the video tx and one of the two antennas on the monitor. If you add a helical as the secondary antenna you will be able to get much further distances or course and it will dynamically switch between the two antennas as needed. Using the helical antenna on your p2v you're well aware of the benefits the helical made there and a 5.8ghz helical is smaller. Just remember to match rhcp or lhcp together. I'd love to have the P2 with H3-3D as well. I love the stability you demonstrate with the gimbal. I would just switch to v2 firmware instead of the 3,0 firmware. Speaking of firmware the latest firmware for the H3-3D is supposed to reduce how often the landing skids come in to view depending on your movement.
Hi Simon! After watching this video a few times, I went with the exact same solution (except that I opted for the iOSD mini, and I'm using a different monitor mount). It works like a charm! Thanks for the video series.
I'd hand it to the GoProHero3 or Inspire 1 for image quality. I suppose you would be flying blind with the H3-3D + GPH3 but it cost significantly less than the Inspire 1. I suggest buying the best but the H3-3D + GPH3 is an excellent choice as long as you aren't trying to fly too high or fly in areas where a large object obscures the pilots direct line of sight. I just bought another gimbal and camera for my Phantom 2V+
***** Thank you Simon. Yes dji recommend it to be fitted inside the hull but i do not have the correct Phillips driver yet:) Will your setup work with the iOSD mini you think?
Dear Simon, First, thank you for your contributions to the Multi-rotor community with your outstanding how-tos, product reviews, and informational videos! Second, if someone would want to replicate the setup you have here, what would you guess the cost would be based on typical street prices? I'm not looking for anything exact, just a rough estimate somewhere in the +/- $100 (or £) range. Thanks in advance!
Hey Simon, firstly thank you for all your extremely helpful and entertaining videos, secondly I wanted to ask you something... Our family are going to grease in a couple of weeks... who could I get in trouble with if I took out my drone and used it there?
Hi Simon. Not going down the fpv route yet , got a bit more flying to do first! I would like to mirror your setup when i do. Sounds great and i find the whole idea fascinating . A lot of the questions i would ask have already been asked on the comments here. Problem is i can only see the questions and none of your answers?? Is there a specific reason for this?? Thanks for taking the time to make such an informative video.
Hi Simon, great video! Where and how do you put/connect the anti interference board/chip that comes with the H3-3D? Thanks and keep the great videos coming!
Thanks for this video! I had been researching a very similar setup (only difference is the iOSD mini vs the mark 2) and this answered a ton of questions that I had!
***** I didn't see your tip until it was too late! BUT, I got my setup, and thanks to your video (among others), got everything installed and configured and had my first test flight! My next project is to figure out a way to get the FPV data overlaid on the GoPro video. :)
i enjoy ur vids btw you have given me an deep understanding on the DJI Phantom, i have one question for you thou, you never mentioned how you control the movement of the Zenmuse H3-3D in flight, thx in advance
I purchased a used phantom 2 vision for a great price to see how into flying i would get. I absolutely love it and I'm looking to upgrade soon to get better quality videos from the use of a gimbal. I like the quality of the gopro and the practicality of being able to use the camera for other uses. However, I love the fpv vision app on my iphone 5s. It would be really disappointing to not be able to use that feature with the gopro. Keep in mind I'm on a limited budget and not too tech savvy. It just seems like a lot of extra effort and money compared to the vision + to get the fpv that comes standard with the iPhone app (including telemetry and battery life). Can you offer any insight i may be overlooking that could help me make up my mind?
Thanks for the great video *****. Is there anything that needs to be connected to the GoPro in order to fly with an FPV? I ask because I noticed you didn't have anything plugged into the USB or HDMI ports, and I'd like to avoid plugging into my GoPro usb port because it currently doesn't work.
can you use the Rx that comes with the DJI as one of the ariels.. is it better? Great video. I am looking for that wine as I am in Australia but haven't seen it yet. Cheers
Hello simon, my apologies for my ignorance. I am a wife trying to get brownie points from the husband by buying him an FPV setup for his birthday. Your above recommendations sound spot on from my rather blind research. Great to see it working. One stumbling point - do i need to purchase the AVL58 transmitter AND receiver? And regarding the antenna is only one needed for the drone? They seem to come in pairs as do the trans/reciever. Any advice welcome. Many thanks, S
Hello, many thanks to all the clear information you provide us. Its quite easy and brilliant !!! I just received my new package with avl58 TX & RX, DJI cloverleaf antenna, FPV hub and furnished cables, ground station screen and his lipo, cables to connect all that stuff. Just two question since nor scheme or vids answers it : How do you manage energy source wiring of the IOSD Mark II inside the phantom ? (since I have seen on your vid that the two big black and red cables going out of the IOSD (BATT 11-26V) are going inside the phantom. Is the yellow connectors directly pluggable into the main source battery through right connectors or will the iosd use an other independent additional lipo ? I have also seen that correct angulation for the cloverleaf is about 45 °. What the hell this little black metallic piece with kind of a hook at the end is done for ? coming out with two small screws M3*8 ? Many thanks for your answer or new vids about that Phil
***** Hello Simon, many thanks for your quick and complete answer. My god, you absolutely know everything. You well hold your name. Its quite amazing DJI furnish a very little basic information with the FPV HUB even if cables are well identified and since they warning us about correct DC current to manage their appliances. I d also appreciate your off comment regarding what you appreciate. I will advice you a Croizet Bages red wine Gran cru classé coming from Pauillac, one of my favourite Domain from the Bordeaux area, immediately followed up with the Pomerol named area. Taste it ! If you come to the south of France leave a message ! Best regards Phil
Hey Simon, keep up the Aussie wine support........my question is I'm wondering if any of these high end gimbals ( especially H3-3D) allow the use of the waterproof GoPro casing. I'm looking to video surfing, kayaking etc, and the loss of my Phantom would hurt , but GoPro as well could tip me over.......what are your thoughts, and have you made a video of the iPhone FPV "poverty pack", cheers. D.
Am interested in your decision to get the iosd mk2 rather than the mini - it does data logging but are you not going to get the new Flytrex ? Hope you get a chance to do mini reviews of the components in your setup ..... Really enjoyed this overview - thanks for posting :)
Hello Simon, Cheers Mate! I enjoy a nice glass of Cab Sav. I loved the video and I was wondering where I could order that monitor bracket online? Thanks
Hi Simon, On my new P2 (which I yet to fly- curse UK winter weather!) I do get a clear image on my FPV (Boscam thunderbolt and monitor). But do get a scrolling herringbone effect running over the picture. Its consistant no matter where I am stood- though once in the air might be different. How is yours from any interference? I have some clover leaf aerials fitted.
Hey Simon awesome videos new Phantom 2 owner looking at different FPV setups, great runthrough of your system I just ordered the same setup & parts besides the mark II is your anti interference board on the inside? or did you just forget it all together? thanks for the help
Hi, I'm really new to the whole drone scene, and i've been looking at the phantom 2 for my GoPro, mainly to film while im fishing. I was wondering if you had a video on how to actually install all of the pieces of FPV? Thanks
***** Thanks! Is this a correct one? I don't want to buy the wrong part. www.amazon.com/DJI-AVL58-5-8G-VIDEO-DOWNLINK/dp/B00HHICQUK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1412457227&sr=8-1&keywords=avl58
Simon - not sure if you covered this - do you have any recommendations for optimum GoPro settings for video taken from this setup. I have a Hero 3 and have just installed the H3-3D gimbal. I'm sure I saw somewhere that 720p 30fps was a "good" setting - just wondering whether shooting in 1080p gives a better result of whether this higher resolution exaggerates movement from the P2 that the gimbal can't compensate for. I also think I saw somewhere that going to 60fps would only be worthwhile if you were going to do some slo-mo footage. Apologies if you have covered this elsewhere (or indeed in the video - which I have watched previsously but can't immediately review). Many thanks for you advice.
Simon, I purchased the Black Pearl along with the Rave Aerial mount based on this video alone. I have received the Black Pearl and I also have the DJI AVL58 av transmitter currently installed on my Phantom 2. I cannot seem to get the channels to match up? What is the best process to find the correct channel frequency? Thanks for your help.
Hey Simon, first of all thanks for the video it helped me out when getting my Phantom set up. I have almost the same setup. I just have a question that i thought you might be able to help me with. I bought the Black Pearl kit that came with everything i have seen in your video the only thing different that i have is the AVL58 5.8 VideoLink Receiver. Is this something i want to install to the back of my controller or is it just used for a seconded monitor. i hooked it up and i get picture with and without it so i was not sure what the reason would be to use it. I'm very new at this i would appreciate the help. Thank you Sir.
Right on thanks for the quick response. I'm glad i don't need to use it. Just one more thing to mess with. Again thanks for you help and the videos. I actually have a Vision 2 plus but something happened to the camera when i view the video i recorded it has horizontal lines running through it. Especially in lighter areas of the film.. I even tried different camera setting nothing helps. have you ever seen this problem. Last question sorry lol.
Hi Simon...Thanks for all the good information here. I plan on implementing what you did to add FPV capability on my P2. Can you please check to make sure I have everything I need to complete this project? Do I have all the necessary cables? DJI AVL58 DJI iOSD Mini DJI FPV hub Black Pearl Diversity RX 7 Monitor mount for the Phantom transmitter Existing hardware: Phantom 2 Zenmuse H3-3D GoPro Hero 3 Black Ed.
***** Hi there totally great video keep it up. I'm totally new to the world of FPV and would like to know if I can use same DJI receiver you have in your video with the black pearl monitor. Without any other work around meaning soldering. My friend gave me a phantom 2 with the Transmitter on it but I would like to get the Black Pearl. Will it work or will I need something else for it to work? Thanks in advance.
I would like your advice please. I have a vision 2 and have managed to break my camera I believe, the power in put deal is broke or fried. I brought it to a local rc guy it was working half of the time killing of power happened when I would tilt my camera via the app. Once this RC guy messed with v2 he determined the cable was bad. I ordered a new one plugged it in and now nothing. So I have explored all the options I could think and have come to the conclusion that I will spend as much money trying to get it fixed as I would purchasing a new FC 200 camera. So I think I will be in the market for a new drone would you recommend getting the vision 2 + or a phantom 2 with the gamble and and the FPV system. Or get another v2 and add the rotorpixel or similar gimble? Trying to stay around $1000 budget but would love be to spend less naturally. This is new to me really enjoy it, I really like the aerial photography aspects.
Thanks for the timely response. Is the v2+ any less durable than the 2 with gimble. I.e when I crash next time will it be cheaper to replace go pro and gimbal instead of buying all the separate FPV system plus gimbal? Is the range that much better with the p2 and v2+ over the v2? I do like the app even though I have had a little connection issues in the past.
Hi Simon, So with this set up was there any need to open up the shell of the phantom at all. I'm a complete novice to all this so the thought of having to open things scares me!!!
Thanks for the quick reply! My mind is set on the plus I think. I want to focus more on stills. It's a stepping stone for me to a bigger one. Awesome vids! Very informative and helpful.
Something to add to some people who may have done the same thing i did. Had my ani interference board taped onto the bottom and replaced it for the hub. This is not the case the ani interference board must be mounted inside the copter.
Great video Simon. Good stuff. Keep them coming. I have a question. I crashed my Phantom 2 Vision+ today in Boston MA. I was flying in a tight urban environment without the propeller guards. Long story short; a high 20mph gust of wind caught it as I was trying to land and it spiraled 15 away from me into a brick wall. I was mortified. Surprisingly, my Phantom 2 Vision+ survived the 8 foot altitude crash (into cement sidewalk) with some minor dings, scratches, camera fell off the gimbal arm, the cable ribbon ripped, and I managed to only break two propellers. I ran a 10 minute test flight this evening on the same date and it flew fine and still had perfect GPS stabilization and way point function. So the question - Can I have FPV function on my Phantom 2 Vision+ ? I would like to have FPV function connected to my Android cellphone just like before. I want to purchase the H3-3D Gimbal and the GoPro Hero3. Any help appreciated.
Hey Daniel. Glad there are more drone flyers in Boston. Take a look at what I did during my first week with my Phantom. Aerial shots of Boston Foliage: th-cam.com/video/gItFIGI2iqE/w-d-xo.html
There's a kit from dronexpert - dronexpert.nl/product/pre-order-quickrelease-dronin-for-dji-phantom-2-vision/ - that makes it possible to mount a H3-3D to a P2V+. Has anyone tried or heard about it? It seems like a good way to fix your broken P2V+ and upgrade it at the same time.
Simon I have just tried inside and out side , I didn't know if their could be something wrong with my equipment ? What band and channel is yours set to? Thanks
Hi Simon, thanks for your videos and for your good taste (italian wines ;-)). I have the same setup you show here, the only difference is an immersion RC TX. The issue I have is that I can see the iosdmini output on the monitor, but no video at all. I tried to switch the fpv hub from iosd to video, but nothing. Should I change some setup on my gopro side to see the output? Than you!
Hello Simon, Im going to put together a brief video explaining my issue, but maybe you can help me out, so I wont have to do so. I bought the P2 with the H 3 3D gimbal about 6 months ago, but didnt take it out of the box. I have 2 other P2 older models. My first, original Phantom, is no more. It skimmed the trees and fell, crashed and burned yesterday. I still have the ios mini set up that you have. However the lastest version of the P2 comes with anti interference stability board. I dont see that in your set up. Can you explain how that fits in to the wiring schematic. Thanks. You know I love the videos, Thanks Buddy
Hi Thank you for the video. I just want to ask how the video is sent to the transmitter. I didn't see a cable which I assume would affect the gimbals operation?
Hi Simon, just got my fpv package, dji iosdmini, Balck Pearl monitor, immersion 600mw transmitter and dji fpv hub. I understand how most things connect but where does the zenmuse gimbal anti interference board connect up with all this? Do you have this board on your set up? Great videos of yours, its great to be able to access a phantom info "hub". Even minor fixes like the battery lubrication fix are great. PS any chance of a decent schematic diagram of how everything connects? Is it possible to stow all this extra gear other than the transmitter internally? Cheers
can you please tell me everything i need (all the cables, etc.), along with the Black Pearl monitor so that i can see what I'm shooting with my GoPro hero 3 on a h3 3d gimbal on my phantom 2?
Do you get live video feed off of the GoPro with the Zenmuse H3 - 3D? I have the phantom 2 vision and could connect directly to the DJI app on my phone.
Hi Simon, thanks for this very helpful video - there's very little out there in the way of instructions. I am curious as to how you mount the receiver to the monitor/controller. Cryptically, there is one single piece of velcro in the AVL58 kit and I am stumped as how to use this with the mount? any help much appreciated.
Hi Simon, many thanks for the quick reply. Your answer helped a lot - I didn't realise that the Black Pearl had the built-in receiver. I have it working now and it's superb. I went for the BP after seeing your video - great choice. Thanks once again and keep up the good work!
Hello. Stumbled over your channel tonight. Saw almost every video about the Dji Phantom 2. Really great channel. I am gonna get a FVP setup. Now I just have the Dji P2 with G3-3D and the GoPro Hero3+. Will this be enough: - Dji Mini iOSD - Dji Phantom 2 Fpv Cable and Hub - Dji Videolink AVL58 - Black Pearl 7" Monitor - Dji Monitor Mount The web page where I am buying this from..says this on the AVL58: "This system has a Transmitter and Receiver and a bunch of wires, those wires were made for Go Pro cameras and T-Join batteries. To get the system to work, you will need a Monitor, a Go Pro Hero Camera and Two 11.1V Li-PO Battery" So my question is..will my list above be enough to get a good FVP setup? Sorry for the long comment. Again..great channel!! :)
Hey Simon! so I finally decided to spend more money and buy this FPV system for my Phantom 2... From your video and others I see that I need the BlackPearl Monitor (32ch or 7ch?), the iOSD Mini, the FPV cable and hub, and the Video transmitter (immersion RC 600mw or DJI avl58?). Is that all I need? Which is better over which? I also have a GoPro Hero4 Silver, which has worked just fine with the Zenmuse H3-3D, but would it work fine with any of these transmitters? Thanks again for your help and responding to us all!
Hi Simon, thanks a lot for your reply! Ok so if I buy the Immersion RC I need to do some soldering but if I buy the AVL58 I don't need to do this step, am I right? Thank you for your help
Thanks Simon - now I know that it isn't just me not setting something up correctly. The transmitters channel x1 is not showing any movement in the assistant software. Do you have any idea why it would not be function from the tx. I've taken it apart because I thought maybe the lever was not contacting the pot, but when I turned with a screwdriver, still nothing?? I'm not sure whats going on. If you have any advice it would be much appreciated. Thanks Simon
Thanks simon , only thing I am getting is the picture does flicker quite a bit, so not sure if that is why it's doing that. I have the same setup as you except I have the isod mini instead . How is your picture? Thanks again
Simon, nice video. We just bought the same setup and I am waiting on the HUB in our FPV kit. They were out of stock. But my question was on the gimbal. When I get everything powered up the gimbal only tilts down (with finger controller on back) about 80%. When the gimbal turns on it tests it's thresholds and goes all the way down....I've calibrated everything. Have any ideas?
Yea I had calibrated the X1 channel. I did find in another spot a way to allow more/less travel, so I increased the travel under the gimbal TAB on the PT2 software and that fixed it. Thanks again!
So if I wanted to buy this and setup FPV goggles, how would I go about doing it exactly? Would I need to buy the goggles + a transmitter to connect the camera to? Would the transmitter need its own battery or something? What is a good transmitter if I need one? What's the price of the DJI Phantom 2 with Zenmuse, H3-3D and 3 Axis Gimbal, because I could only find it on Amazon for $959 and they often charge much more than the items actually cost to make a bigger profit? Also, can you use OSD's with the DJI Phantom 2 to keep track of battery power, distance/connection, etcetera ? I'm a dummy when it comes to this stuff.
Great channel lots of info ... I am seriously thinking of getting a p2 and as a photographer I'm more inclined in the p2v+ for its 16mp dng cam but now I got in a stall cos I heard that dji put restrictions on flying and not just around the airports which is understandable but anywhere now .... Is that true ? Thanks for all the work you do it's very very help full
Thanks for ur reply first of all About the restrictions that is great to hear cos it was the only think holding me back and about the cam specs I did look into it and its the DNG that makes it more attractive to me , I already have a go pro black edition and I love what it's capable to do but like you said the shutter button would be missing .... Tbh it would be more for video then stills cos I know I won't be able to take great pics but love that the option is there and that everything is ready to go .... I'm new to all this and so I wanted something to just fly and shoot for now .... Il guess that the vision plus gimble is removable and can accommodate different once right ? And for wine try the Barolo Prapo makes sure its a bit aged and open leave sit for a few before jumping in its indulgence :) Thanks
Hello Aron , its true that your driving an helicopter even if no one is on board !!! Because of that and depending the country where you are some laws and regulations are established for all flying objects in the sky. The traffic must be organized until an accident will occur in case not. This is why there is some complete restricted areas such military areas for example or industrial areas where drone fail could occur a major risk. Then for security reasons, confidentiality, rights of the image if you go with a camera some limitations you should know are important. As an other example which is this one structural you may yourself avoid zones where high voltage lines are, as well as high powering electric station, cellular GPS main pylon diffuser, meteorology stations, television relay, airports, harbours, all place where there is a potentiality of high flux of different emitting frequencies or waves such as cellular phones particularly emitting on 2,4 ghz with Wi-Fi band such as could be the same frequency of your remote control board. Be careful as well about big metallic or concrete structure ......Believe me. Annoying...... BUT there is also so many fantastic places where you could go and free enjoy without stressing yourself. Last advice, always check up first wit Gearth where and surround you fly . It will save you time and better control of what u do. ENJOY
utube4phil i appreciate ur feedback ..tbh once i got the phantom i immediately realised that it has to be respected and im not rushing with it and taking my time to learn it plus to be aware of my surroundings cos this thing is no toy.
Hello, First let me say I live in the United States. Iv'e been enjoying your channel since purchasing my DJI Phantom2 Vision Plus. There has been a lot of talk on the news about the drones like what I'm flying, what is your take on all this Do you think the drones will become illegal or if not, what do you think will become of this hobby I just invested into and love? It's got me worried and a bit bummed. Thanks for your time in advance. Tommy
I think I'm going to buy an iPad mini because the iPhone is simply to small for my 53 years old eyes. Would you know if it will work with the iPad mini? The reason I ask is because I couldn't find the Dji app for my regular size iPad.
Simon, I have a Phantom 2 with H3-3D and the Black Pearl FPV monitor. The monitor gives great real-time flight data but I don't know how to capture that. Is there a way to record the flight data, such as altitude, to be seen on playback of the Hero footage? I am new to this game and during one of my recent flights, I went higher than I have before (100 meters). I only stayed there for a short time because of high wind. During the playback of the Hero video, I was not able to pinpoint exactly where I hit 100 m. If that data was recorded to my video footage or saved somewhere, I could point to a frame and say "I was so many meters high at this point...". -Thanks, Robert
I have the same exact set up. However I noticed you didnt have the anti interference board connected? I seem to be having a problem not having my transmitter working, any idea why? My gimbal goes right into the anti-interference board and then the other end connects to the Phantom. Instead of the gimbal plugging into the iosd?
Hi I was wondering if you could tell me what you think is necessary in purchasing a DJI Phantom 2 with the Zenmuse H3-3D gimbal, and the prices if possible. I work for a production department for a university and I am looking in to buying one of these devices to mount the new Gopro 4 when it is released. Problem is I would be using this device to get aerial shots for the university/out side clients and I am worried about the wifi connection issue. Is it possible to get the same amount of connection frequency using an iPad? Thanks for your info.
Hello Simon, do you have a video to see how you connected the iOSD the the inside of the DJI? I'm taking about the battery connector (red and black wires). In your video it looks like wires are going inside the drone, but I can not figure this out. Thank you in advance for your time.
I am getting the AVL58 lite and blackpearl to use with my h4-3d and hero 4. What antennas do you recommend for the AVL58 lite? I live in the US. Thanks!
Hi Simon, Quick question, can you use the DJI Zenmuse H3-3D gimbal when not attached to the Phantom? I.e. can I attached it to a handheld pole and use it, or is it powered by the Phantom?
***** Many thanks for your reply Simon. So could you therefore, buy a standard P2 (with no gimbal) and buy a generic "non Phantom' version H3-3D and rig it up to the P2 and also rig it up to a pole (where I could attached a battery to it)? So that you have the ability to use 1 gimbal for both airborne and handheld use? I love the gimbals but want to avoid having to buy two versions.
***** Thanks for the link Simon but yes I think that's all over my head as well. I think I will opt for ordering the DJI Phantom 2 + H3-3D. Just got my Hero 4 black through and would love to get some of these arial shots. Many thanks for your time in replying and great videos! I'm going to do some research now on a video down link to a screen and see you have another video on that, apologies in advance if I ask some more questions :-s
One more question Simon if a may pls You demonstrated the fpv on the vision 2 that can take obviously fpv googles but can the vision plus take fpv google also due to the 5.4 signal ?
Just had a look at these options and the ziess looks great and it has the iPod /iPhone adapter for straight connectivity . Thanks Simon you've been very helpful
Simon I have tried every band and every channel , with and with out the interference board and I can't get the flicker or the white lines. Any ideas ? Thanks!!!
Hey Simon, I've got a Phantom 2 with H3--3D but I can not figure out how to get the tilt function to work with the original radio. Did your tilt function work out of the box, or is there something I have to do to activate it. Thanks man - Morgan
Great videos. Can you outlay what I need to replicate your FPV set-up and are there places in the US where I can purchase them. I have the Phantom 2 + H3D3 Gimble so it would appear I need: - DJI AVL58 av transmitter - DJI iOSD Mark 2 - DJI FPV hub - Black Pearl diversity rx 7" monitor - monitor mount for the Phantom transmitter What about clover leaf antennas? Also, Why the iOSD mark 2 over the mini OSD? Thanks!!
***** Thanks Simon! Ok, so based on your council I'll amend my shopping list to the following: - DJI AVL58 av transmitter - DJI Mini OSD - DJI FPV hub - Black Pearl diversity rx 7" monitor - monitor mount for the Phantom transmitter (the one you have the link for) - FPV Antennas Black Pearl kit???? Last questions: - I didn't see the link to the FPV Antennas. Can you send? - Alot of people talk about 5.8GHz 600mW emmercionRC transmitters, etc. Is that the same thing as the DJI AVL58 av transmitter? If so, is the DJI better? - Are there videos on how to install each of the above and in what order? THANK YOU SIMON!!! - Justin
***** Brilliant! I definitely do not need/want to solder to I"m going to go all DJI. Really, really appreciate the question. Last random question, I"ve heard you have to "set" your monitor to match your unit. Given the DJI set-up, did you black pearl just "figure it out" or did you have to align anything? Thanks again for you time Simon, Justin
***** what channel are you running on now? I ask because when I 1st got my Black Pearl I got a perfect signal but as soon as I was more than 5m away (i.e. flying) from my P2 I had total signal breakup. I then looked at channels on both the AVL58 and the BP and found the 1st "common" frequency and set them to that - if i remember it was channel E. I now have FPV connectivity but I also have the following issues: 1. Breakup of the video signal while doing maneuvers - the more "motion" the more breakup (but I can fly 100+ meters away and while the P2 is hovering, I have video). 2. Not great video quality on the BP - I appreciate that the monitor won't support 1080p but I was expecting better quality than what I am getting. Could this be a setting on my monitor as I set it to the highest quality I could? Anything else you can suggest?
Thanks Simon - I'll do some more testing myself. Hadn't thought about using the monitor for review, good idea. Just need to carry the cable in the already overflowing backpack :-)
On the photo side of things - Does this FPV set-up work when the gopro is in photo mode to take stills? I would like to do some photography as well as the video so I was curious!
What did you do with the tiny connection that plugs into the GoPro from the H3D3? I have not been able to find anything adressing this issue. I have no idea how to get around that cheap flimsy ribbon connection on the H3D3. Not compatable with FPV?
***** Ah, I see now about the FPV set up. the main issue with this ribbon connection is it covers the SD card so you must constantly unplug that cable. It is extremely flimsy and will break over time just from normal use. they even sent an extra ribbon cable for when this one breaks. Horrible horrible design. I hope there is a way to go to the Hero Port in the back. The V2 really dropped the ball on that.
***** Hi! Simon, I'm planning to get one myself but I don't know which one. I already have GoPro 3+. is it cheaper to get this plus all the FPV stuff you have there or just get the Vision Plus V3.0?
Do you have a link to the FPV Hub? I just got the P2 with HD3D and AVL58. The Hub I got looks different than yours. The cable coming out of the gimbal will not fit into the Hub. I wonder if the hub I got is for the 2 axis gimbal? I searched but cannot find different Hubs for the different gimbals
Simon, i have almost the same setup, different Video TX only, except my H3-3D has that damn ribbon cable that plugs into the gopro, as a result, i learned that since the H3-3D is both charging the gopro, and streaming video out the same ribbon cable, it causes lines of interference on my monitor, many have reported this, and some even used a tiny piece of thin plastic sheet and stuck it in the ribbon connection to isolate the charging pins on the ribbon cable, eliminating charging, leaving only the video streaming pins making contact, and solved the issue. can you suggest another solution? i notice that you are using the H3-3D with the H3-2D style rear connector for the gopro, maybe this rear connection is not prone to interference? can i modify my gimbal to accept the rear mounting gopro contacts instead of that dreaded ribbon connector?
Hi Simon, I've just ordered the IOSD Mini, I already have the video HUB board and Transmitter, is this completely solderless also with the IOSD Mini? Also does the IOSD Mini come with the correct cabling to link with the above? If not where can I get the cabling for this solderless setup from?
***** Thank you, I decided to try and go for more range with the FPV setup and have ordered the immersion 600mW Long range Transmitter w/ SpiroNet Antenna and the plug and play cables straight into the Phantom 2. Have you ever thought about extending the range of your remote for the Phantom 2? I've seen a couple of things on you tube of people modding the controller to give a range of up to 6km!
Oh ok.can you give me a list of what to get ,the monitor just ordered one,so the monitor picks up my GoPro,do I need to solder anything.srry for the dumb question I just wanna have a set up like yours not pro but good.
Thanks for replying you know if I can use a inversion or invision rc transmitter in a dji phantom 1 not two. I'm not sure whether the name is inversion or invision but I know enough about the product.
Nice bit of kit, I've bought the PV2+ with HD 1080p built-in camera. The quality looks great, I can't wait until it arrives. In the meantime I will be practising on the Hubsan mini quad.
Thank you, that's great. The kit comes tomorrow so will check it out and pray for a clear sky!
Thanks for the heads up on the Rave Monitor Mount. FYI - i ordered from the U.S. (California) and got it in less than two weeks.
Happy days can't wait for the waypoints for the vision
Nice setup I have the black pearl for my phantom 1 and immersion 600mhz transmitter with skew planer on transmitter and one the the black pearl getting 900m range but would be best with a helical on the black pearl for longer range
Just collected my H3-3D from DJI today, fitting it tonight!
***** No, its the new version, Ive only had it about three days.
Ok thanks simon I will give that a try. Thanks for all the good videos!!
I like the Union Jack bands!!
I wonder what you did with the interference board? I might have to try this setup as it looks nice:)
Regards, Lars
OMG!That drone is freakin awesome !thnaks for the heads up on the wine !
*****
Thank you Simon. Yes dji recommend it to be fitted inside the hull but i do not have the correct Phillips driver yet:) Will your setup work with the iOSD mini you think?
*****
Thank you very much for your time Simon:)
Dear Simon,
First, thank you for your contributions to the Multi-rotor community with your outstanding how-tos, product reviews, and informational videos!
Second, if someone would want to replicate the setup you have here, what would you guess the cost would be based on typical street prices? I'm not looking for anything exact, just a rough estimate somewhere in the +/- $100 (or £) range.
Thanks in advance!
***** Wow! Fastest reply ever. Thank you for that cost breakdown. Still a wee bit rich for my blood.
Best wishes to you!
Very nice mate when you getting a TBS Discovery Pro
Perfect set-up. But HEAVY indeed. Now, ... where are you going to mount the Ground Station Simon???
***** Great Video!
Any word on when this is happening? Waypoints for the Vision that is. thanks!
Thanks and keep the great videos coming!
nice Simon, same as mine...DJI Phantom 2 H3 3D GoPro Black, Sony as15, First FPV flight, 1 kilometre :)
Thanks Simon!! I will try this!!
Great video Simon! With all these accessories mounted on the phantom, what kind of battery life do you typically get out of a battery?
Thanks for this video! I had been researching a very similar setup (only difference is the iOSD mini vs the mark 2) and this answered a ton of questions that I had!
***** I didn't see your tip until it was too late! BUT, I got my setup, and thanks to your video (among others), got everything installed and configured and had my first test flight! My next project is to figure out a way to get the FPV data overlaid on the GoPro video. :)
Very nice set up .
Great video!
Few questions:
1. how this FPV setup affect the flight duration itself?
2. The FPV video came from the gopro itself right?
i enjoy ur vids btw you have given me an deep understanding on the DJI Phantom, i have one question for you thou, you never mentioned how you control the movement of the Zenmuse H3-3D in flight, thx in advance
Cheers
Thanks for the great video! One question though, how is the GoPro connected to the AVL58 to transmit the video back to the Black Pearl?
Many thanks for your answer or new vids about that
Phil
Best regards
Phil
I am also of course using h3-3d gimbal and gopro 3+
Really useful video. Thanks!
Cool vid!!! Great job!
Another awesome information! I'm ready to install the upgrade parts for my phantom 2. How do I connect the new controller to the p2? Thanks!
***** thank you! I should have looks up the your feed before asking haha but thanks again buddy!
Am interested in your decision to get the iosd mk2 rather than the mini - it does data logging but are you not going to get the new Flytrex ? Hope you get a chance to do mini reviews of the components in your setup .....
Really enjoyed this overview - thanks for posting :)
Yes, that little hub looks great !
Hello Simon, Cheers Mate! I enjoy a nice glass of Cab Sav. I loved the video and I was wondering where I could order that monitor bracket online? Thanks
thanks!
Hi Simon,
On my new P2 (which I yet to fly- curse UK winter weather!) I do get a clear image on my FPV (Boscam thunderbolt and monitor).
Thanks for the help simon on replying to comments Google + settings, much appreciated
Hi, I'm really new to the whole drone scene, and i've been looking at the phantom 2 for my GoPro, mainly to film while im fishing. I was wondering if you had a video on how to actually install all of the pieces of FPV?
Thanks
Also I was wondering where you got DJI AVL58? Could you put a link? Thanks Alot!
Simon,
I purchased the Black Pearl along with the Rave Aerial mount based on this video alone.
Good configuration!!!
you can set gopro to video and take pics at the same time
Hi Simon...Thanks for all the good information here. I plan on implementing what you did to add FPV capability on my P2. Can you please check to make sure I have everything I need to complete this project? Do I have all the necessary cables?

Hi there totally great video keep it up.
Thanks for the video! I'm having trouble with my H3-3D almost pointing straight down. Any ideas as to what's going on?
Have you been able to take stills with this setup. I would love to do both video and stills. Thanks for your video posts.
Hi Simon,
So with this set up was there any need to open up the shell of the phantom at all.
I'm a complete novice to all this so the thought of having to open things scares me!!!
Awesome vids! Do you think the phantom 2 with a go pro is better then the new plus? I really like some of the features of the new plus. Thanks.
I know thank you very much that video helped me out alot. I was just originally under the impression the hub replaced it.

***** I really like the H3-3D with the GoProHero3. The quality is stunning. Too bad it won't work with the Phantom 2V+
Than you!
Thank you Simon! I think it's the poor ribbon cable. I changed it but I fear that the usb output module is ruined. It's a shame for DJI and for me!
Yay! Wine and installation. Very civilised...
Cheers
***** Thanks Simon that's very helpful.I initially was trying to mount it externally but your system is better.
can you please tell me everything i need (all the cables, etc.), along with the Black Pearl monitor so that i can see what I'm shooting with my GoPro hero 3 on a h3 3d gimbal on my phantom 2?
How do you take photos and make video once you are not using DJI App?
Do you get live video feed off of the GoPro with the Zenmuse H3 - 3D?
I have the phantom 2 vision and could connect directly to the DJI app on my phone.
Okay, thank you Simon!
Simon, Also do I need to be in diversity mode and band e or just band e only thanks again!!
Hi Simon,
I have to same monitor. Where did you get that cool transmitter mount? Nice video, BTW!
Jeff
Got it. Just ordered it. Wish I'd seen it sooner! Thanks!
Hello. Stumbled over your channel tonight. Saw almost every video about the Dji Phantom 2. Really great channel.
I am gonna get a FVP setup.
Now I just have the Dji P2 with G3-3D and the GoPro Hero3+.
Will this be enough:
- Dji Mini iOSD
- Dji Phantom 2 Fpv Cable and Hub
- Dji Videolink AVL58
- Black Pearl 7" Monitor
- Dji Monitor Mount
The web page where I am buying this from..says this on the AVL58:
"This system has a Transmitter and Receiver and a bunch of wires, those wires were made for Go Pro cameras and T-Join batteries. To get the system to work, you will need a Monitor, a Go Pro Hero Camera and Two 11.1V Li-PO Battery"
So my question is..will my list above be enough to get a good FVP setup?
Sorry for the long comment. Again..great channel!! :)
*****
Ok, thanks! I will place an order with the stuff mentioned above and then Im set! :)
Thanks again. You just got a follower. Wee
Hey Simon! so I finally decided to spend more money and buy this FPV system for my Phantom 2...
Thanks for ur reply first of all
About the restrictions that is great to hear cos it was the only think holding me back and about the cam specs I did look into it and its the DNG that makes it more attractive to me , I already have a go pro black edition and I love what it's capable to do but like you said the shutter button would be missing .... Tbh it would be more for video then stills cos I know I won't be able to take great pics but love that the option is there and that everything is ready to go .... I'm new to all this and so I wanted something to just fly and shoot for now .... Il guess that the vision plus gimble is removable and can accommodate different once right ?
And for wine try the Barolo Prapo makes sure its a bit aged and open leave sit for a few before jumping in its indulgence :)
Thanks
Noted :)
ENJOY
utube4phil i appreciate ur feedback ..tbh once i got the phantom i immediately realised that it has to be respected and im not rushing with it and taking my time to learn it plus to be aware of my surroundings cos this thing is no toy.
bt the way , i found what those rapid red light are simon .... they are for hight restriction areas
***** Great info, Simon. And this will work with the Phantom 2 Hero setup?
***** Thanks again!
Thanks Simon!!
hi Simon would you go for the iosd mini if you were setting this up again now or is there a benefit for the full size?
Thank you Simon!
I am getting the AVL58 lite and blackpearl to use with my h4-3d and hero 4. What antennas do you recommend for the AVL58 lite? I live in the US. Thanks!
Do you use a li-po battery to power your fpv system, or is it running off of phantom juice?
Thanks in advance.
Thanks for reply. I also wanted to know how well does the gopro hero 4 black on the h3 3d gimble or you don't recommend it?
Hi Simon,
Quick question, can you use the DJI Zenmuse H3-3D gimbal when not attached to the Phantom? I.e. can I attached it to a handheld pole and use it, or is it powered by the Phantom?
One more question Simon if a may pls
You demonstrated the fpv on the vision 2 that can take obviously fpv googles but can the vision plus take fpv google also due to the 5.4 signal ?
Just had a look at these options and the ziess looks great and it has the iPod /iPhone adapter for straight connectivity .
Thanks Simon you've been very helpful
Simon I have tried every band and every channel , with and with out the interference board and I can't get the flicker or the white lines. Any ideas ? Thanks!!!
Hey Simon,
I've got a Phantom 2 with H3--3D but I can not figure out how to get the tilt function to work with the original radio. Did your tilt function work out of the box, or is there something I have to do to activate it. Thanks man - Morgan
Great videos. Can you outlay what I need to replicate your FPV set-up and are there places in the US where I can purchase them. I have the Phantom 2 + H3D3 Gimble so it would appear I need:
- DJI AVL58 av transmitter
- DJI iOSD Mark 2
- DJI FPV hub
- Black Pearl diversity rx 7" monitor
- monitor mount for the Phantom transmitter
What about clover leaf antennas? Also, Why the iOSD mark 2 over the mini OSD?
Thanks!!
*****
Thanks Simon! Ok, so based on your council I'll amend my shopping list to the following:
- DJI AVL58 av transmitter
- DJI Mini OSD
- DJI FPV hub
- Black Pearl diversity rx 7" monitor
- monitor mount for the Phantom transmitter (the one you have the link for)
- FPV Antennas Black Pearl kit????
Last questions:
- I didn't see the link to the FPV Antennas.
Thanks again for you time Simon,
Justin
***** Perfect, thanks so much. I am going to exactly match your set-up (except use the mini) so curious if we arrive up on the same channel :)
I now have FPV connectivity but I also have the following issues:
***** Thanks for the reply. Just the info I was looking for!
What did you do with the tiny connection that plugs into the GoPro from the H3D3? I have not been able to find anything adressing this issue. I have no idea how to get around that cheap flimsy ribbon connection on the H3D3. Not compatable with FPV?
*****
Ah, I see now about the FPV set up. the main issue with this ribbon connection is it covers the SD card so you must constantly unplug that cable.
Is it okay to leave the propellers and gimbal on while not flying?
Do you have a link to the FPV Hub? I just got the P2 with HD3D and AVL58. The Hub I got looks different than yours. The cable coming out of the gimbal will not fit into the Hub. I wonder if the hub I got is for the 2 axis gimbal? I searched but cannot find different Hubs for the different gimbals
hi Simon, i have dji vision you think it's not possible to change H3-2D gimbal and iOSD mini
Hi Simon,
I've just ordered the IOSD Mini, I already have the video HUB board and Transmitter, is this completely solderless also with the IOSD Mini?
