    I realise I'm way behind on this, but I've just bought one to build. You do yourself such an injustice by saying doing a showroom one is more difficult. This is just a work of art - love it!

    An old friend of mine from back in the mid nineties owned an old VW bus and named her "The Loven-Oven" painted on the side in psychedelic lettering. I think I will order one of these and try to recreate. Good Job, Thanks for showing this!

      +JMC Now that sounds like a project. If you have photos, I'm sure someone can convert them into a decal.

    Bravo! Bravissimo! That vehicle brings back some warm memories from the early 1970s. All good! Thanks for bringing it to life. Build on!

    Great build, I like what you said about cars not having rust on them anymore its so true when we were kids it was such a big part of most cars I bet primer sales are tiny now compared to back in the 70's and 80's

      +Mike Hill I still remember my Citroen AX of a few years back - it was primarily plastic!

    Absolutely true, about the minds eye, at the beginning of build. I am a Car modeler by default, but I venture into other categories and watching you and other air/armor builders have taught me alot about specific techniques "you" guys use. I have actually started weathering my vehicles more because of it. Good to see you get out of your "comfort" zone too! Great build.

      +dcinhere Comfort zones.... meh... where we're going, we don't need comfort zones! Says he, falling right back into his comfort zone. But yes, it's nice to take a walk on the wild side every now and then.

    What a great review and an outstanding job on that "Bus". You really captured the essence if you will of the times!! Just love what you did with the rust even on the roof and not to mention the algae. you didn't miss anything, right down to the dice!!
    I appreciate you explaining how you applied the weathering. If you have a HOBBY LOBBY store they sometimes sell Doll House accessories and may have some things that come close in scale. Great work Thanks for the review!!

    Just found your channel and I'm glad. This work is fantastic and I am enthused by the techniques you've used and the creative "adjustments." I've just gotten a bit of a bug to try a kit that I've had in the back of my brain for nigh-on a couple of decades, and they're quite a good place to start. Thanks for sharing.

    that paint bubbling is spot on great job, I just placed a order for one of these kits going to style it in the era I grew up as a young lad and make it a "hippie style" bus and in that old style of slang "far out man" Ron

      +Lee Chambers I'm just getting to the colouring in stage on the 190. It's a great kit for the money. Not Tamiya quality, but where are you going to get a new-tool 1/32 kit for that kind of money, so there is some come and go for the roughness of some of the parts.

    Hello Gary, I was going to say, as always, a great build and video, but that wouldnt be fair, this time you really have taken it to a whole new level. The aged look is so typical of the VW campers and you have nailed it big time mate, well done on an exceptional build and video.

  • @InternationalBritishModeler
    @InternationalBritishModeler 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's a cool looking Grateful Dead wagon with some really nice touches to add to the realism. I like the idea of using glue in spots to create the bubbled up surface to apply the reddish/brown paint to when simulating rusty crumbling steel. It wouldn't have been complete without the furry dice, but, I remember my Ford Capri 2.0GT, back in 1979, had furry front seats, too! Have fun finishing the Fw 190...it's a lovely kit, and, have a great weekend! Cheers : )

    • @MakingModelsAgain
      @MakingModelsAgain  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +International British Modeler Our next door neighbour has a set of fluffy dice in hie... er... Peugeot. It's the thought that counts.
      Regarding the 190, how did you find the cowling covers? I had a bit of bother getting a good alignment on a few, namely the fixed narrow ones with the bulges.

    • @InternationalBritishModeler
      @InternationalBritishModeler 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      MakingModelsAgain When I was dry-fitting the engine assembly into the compartment and testing fits of cowlings around it, I did have a problem with those particular bulged panels. But, I discovered that what was happening on my build, was that the underside exhausts weren't resting onto the outside of the space they are supposed to locate on to. So, I played around with that area with a swiss file until the lower exhausts fully engaged forwards (towards the rear of the plane). This is critical, because the slightest tip of the engine effects the alignment of the propeller spindle...ie, if the engine doesn't seat correctly due to the lower exhausts, the spindle will be angling slightly upwards and will cause a problem for when you try to fit the cooling fan and propeller assembly through the circular opening at the front cowling. The fit will not be a concentric one and the fan blade will push hard against the inside of the top of that circular opening. I always tack glue my parts in place to make sure thy fit, then "snap" them off when I'm happy that I've worked out what needs to be done. Good luck, but my conclusion was all down to the lower exhausts not seating correctly and needing to be back as far as they were intended to be. Hope this makes sense? lol!! Good luck : )

    • @MakingModelsAgain
      @MakingModelsAgain  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +International British Modeler Well, with a shim here and a bit of a trim there, they have pretty much all gone on okay-ish. I'm just having one loose to display the engine, but the rest are fast. Just about to start weathering the paint finish! :)

    @MrLarsenDK 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Love it man... Just love it:-) I really dig how you thought about it's history, makes it so much more interesting. I like your approach to the weathering, less is truely more! We may be able to see all of it on video, but I'm sure this thing has all kinds of funny little guirks. I'm looking forward to seeing it on a real beach diorama with the bbq and the beer:-)

    • @MakingModelsAgain
      @MakingModelsAgain  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Brian Larsen Toft Thanks, Brian. I'm sure there are far more realistic methods to get even more authentic weathering, but that's all part of the learning curve, I suppose! So far my search for the accoutrements has been in vain so I may end up drinking that beer by myself. Not that that is a problem!

    • @MrLarsenDK
      @MrLarsenDK 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Brian Larsen Toft BTW I was thinking, do you know of the Sylvanian toys? Anyway my daughter has some sets and I was wondering if the picnic set would meet some of you needs... Anyway try googling Sylvanian picnic. Just a thought!

    • @MakingModelsAgain
      @MakingModelsAgain  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Brian Larsen Toft I think it might have to be something like that and will then get some light weathering to scale the colours down a bit. :)

    @barrythornton9947 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good job sir, ......... the most worrying aspect of doing the `model car` is not knowing how to get the `showroom finish` on your paint.
    So you chose a great route to transition from armor/aircraft. And spot on to go with the effect of paint bubbling from underneath instead of some new fangled realistic rust weathering product all over it. I owned a 70`s variant and thats just how the `sub paint rust` presented itself. I hope Revell sent a litre of Red paint to do that bus :)

    spectacular work gary :) i love the slightly gunky, used look of the car. i drive a rather old car myself and although it gets loved it also gets used a lot and it shows! you pulled off this kind of special weathering which is not seen on any military vehicle just perfectly. unfortunately i am not knowledgeable about 1/24 scale stuff so i can not give you any advice on accessoires.

    • @MakingModelsAgain
      @MakingModelsAgain  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Hamilkar Barkas I like it when people 'use' their cars (unless of course it a lovingly restored rarity). It always pains me to see those fancy Range Rovers that never get to see a drop of mud!

    You could use one of those umbrellas from that drink they use them in. Sorry can't remember name of the drink, but you can pick them up in the Dollar stores by the bag. I'm not sure if you guys have dollar stores over there.

    • @MakingModelsAgain
      @MakingModelsAgain  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +MisterHampshire Thanks, bud! The algae, believe it or not, took about three different paints until I got that yucky bottle-green colour algae has. It was then just thinned to the point of being almost clear and just dripped into the roof gutter!¬

    I may get round to building the London taxi this summer, it has been planned for the last few summers but I've never got round to it. Unfortunately it seems as we will be spending some time in London again though in the very near future so I guess I will get a fair share of taxi rides, maybe even the odd one in any of the few remaining classic black cabs.. it depends on the result of my sons CT-scan today. We have every reason to believe the sh*t has hit the fan again after 4 years of him being in recession.. :( Will find out Friday week..

    • @modelcitizen6759
      @modelcitizen6759 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cool and by the way I have adopted your ’weathering of a showroom finish’ approach - liberating! Also started using water colour pencils instead of oils, have you given it a go? Oh lastly (Sorry Gary) what mix did you use to get the Red for your Buckeye?

    • @MakingModelsAgain
      @MakingModelsAgain  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Malcolm Hood Well, the instructions called for a 5/95 mix of red/yellow, but it was way too yellowish so I just kept adding red until I had something that looked right. What that actual ratio ended up being, I couldn't tell you, I'm afraid! I might have a go at those pencils as I like the control you get with a stylus-type instrument.

    Hi, I am in process of building vw samba, do you have any tips on fitting front doors as the hinge pins are very small and delicate, thanks

      The truth is, I seem to remember I burst both sets and ended up with a very clumsy glue job. Fortunately, I was able to make it look like rusty, bubbled paint which was in keeping with the look I was going for anyway. Best of luck with yours, though.

    Gary, Who's birds are stoned? Actually I thought the intro had to do with the 60's use of the Samba. 2 tokes short of a Cheech&Chong routine.HA! Sorry, but I spent way to long looking at the Fw. The Samba looks really cool, I like the techniques and methods you used to achieve the final result. The "vacationland" plates and the steering wheel wrap I like the most.Excellent job! Can we go back to the Fw now? - Bob

      +bob dyer I know!!! I was trying to riff off the recent emissions scandal and never thought it might be taken a different way, but given the subject matter, meh, work too!

    Nice!BTW, Search EBay for 1/24 beach umbrella and you should get a few hits.TH-cam won't let me paste any links here, and I'll be b......d if I'm going to type that load of gobbledegook (sorry, no intention to offend previous posters) by hand.Be honest, though - you DID check what it would look like with the FW wings stuck in the doorways, didn't you?

      Me too! Problem is I tend to make things up as I go so I don't have any set-in-stone methods that I utilise and can draw on. I'm still developing methods myself and borrowing from others....

    By the way, Gary. Have you ever tried the hairspray chipping technique? I never saw you referencing it in one of your videos but I myself really think it leaves some nice results :) what are your thoughts?

    • @MakingModelsAgain
      @MakingModelsAgain  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Luca Gruber Hi Luis. Yeah, I tried a while back with mixed success. What I wasn't taken with was the lack of control it gives you. I prefer the arduous task of applying each little chip by hand using a pencil. Take some time, but the chipping can be surface-specific that way.

      +James Mcdougal Hi James! I swear by Iwata (I often sweat AT Iwata also) and use as my go-to brush a Revolution CR. There are better available, but this one fitted my budget - around £120 - and came with the reputation.
      Yeah, we had two hard drives go within a couple of weeks of each other. The info on the iMac was fully recovered by an IT guy at Annie's work, but my old laptop is only partially recoverable. Bummer.
