I appear missing is def my favorite and the story behind josh dying in surgery and being resuscitated and writing this album makes the entire album 10000% better
@@alwaysnauseous Josh had already said before on the Marc Maron wtf podcast interview that he had contracted a MRSA and couldn't shake it because his immune system was shot because he had been ignoring his health and overworked himself trying to do way too much at the same time and not sleeping enough. What made certain people jump to the conclusion that "the whole surgery thing was a fake" was the Dean Delray Let there be talk podcast interview with Josh . Both interviews can be found on youtube. Listen to both and then draw your own conclusion.
@Brian Boulter Pretty sure that what he said, was that he couldn't touch his kid for a few months. For some additional info, there is also an interview with Josh on the "gross anatomy podcast" where they go into the medical detail for a bit. If you have some time, you could look that one up.
I love the outro in I Appear Missing Edit: Also the quarter note chords in the beginning of ...Like Clockwork is fitting as it's like the ticking of a clock :)
Ja'Crispies hmmm for me it kinda felt like a mix between songs for the deaf and the desert sessions stuff. Not quite as heavy as deaf. But there’s masterpiece song writing and musicianship in there
Yeah!!! 6:24 "this is one of this songs that you just play and you feel like you're the coolest person in the universe when you're walking down the street listening to it" That's so true
"I Appear Missing" - look up the Marc Maron WTF episode where he discusses dying on the table during a procedure. And how that impacted so much of this.
Glad you liked I Appear Missing, it's the best Queens of the Stone Age song imo. I'm excited to hear your thoughts on Weird Fishes/Arpeggi and hope you check out Frances the Mute after In Rainbows. I was listening to Frances the Mute a few days ago and it is just a masterpiece, 2nd best album of the 2000s for me. If you do listen to it make sure to prepare yourself for the final track on that album, it will blow your mind.
Yes I really hope he does The Mars Volta too! De-loused might be better to start with though I also agree with I Appear Missing being their best, it's one of the most perfect songs ever created
yeah, i'm a huge fan of both DeLoused and Frances. Cassandra Gemini is almost its own album, and completely brilliant from start to finish. and then, for being not so much a real concept album so much as a collection of excellent songs, Amputechture is also awesome.
@@Snagglemama yeah, i don't get why ppl get hung up on different stylistic issues from one album to the next. can't just make variations of the same album over & over. and Villains was a great album on its own merits...even if i DON'T like Feet.
Fair weather Friends is easily my favourite song on the album and one of my fave QOTSA songs. Just love how bombastic it is and just how fun it is. Great contrast in a pretty dark album.
Glad you mentioned the connection of the sea/beach between I sat By the Ocean and Smooth Sailing. Water and the ocean are also mentioned in Peeled, title track and Kalopsia, the latter to me sounding reminiscent of a rowboat bouncing along the waves in the outro. Seems to be a major concept /theme throughout the album for Josh
Hey I’m new to the channel that’s why I’m so late to comment this but Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails does some vocals on Kalopsia and also the piano work. And Sir Elton John does piano on Fairweather Friends. Just thought those were some cool little facts.
Nine Inch Nails - With Teeth Album is a good one to introduce you and kind of get your ear in, and then everything else Trent's done just blows your away the deeper you go down the rabbit hole.
If you're a QOTSA fan now i'd recommend checking out all the other bands Josh is in Kyuss, Desert Sessions, Them Crooked Vutures and Eagles of Death Metal.
I remember not liking Kalopsia at first, but one night I just got done smoking and I was listening to this album high. When this song came on it blew me away it was just so different stoned; ever since then I came to love this song. This album has actually gotten me through some tough times.
You felt exactly how I do with smooth sailing. Another QOTSA song that makes you wanna walk down the street with a bump in your step? Feet don’t fail me
I appear missing has such a melancholic sound to it I love it. One their best slow songs in my opinion next to the blood is love from lullabies to paralyze.
...Like Clockwork was made months after Josh Homme went through a near-death experience during a surgical operation. It gives "I appear missing" and "..like clockwork" much more meaning. I recommend listening to both of them again, this time paying attention to the lyrics.
Every song of the album gets new meaning because of the context when they were made. From the start, Keep Your Eyes Peeled is pretty much the bottom line, to one like Smooth Sailing that is pretty much about realising about getting the second chance and living it to the fullest.
Lol. The piano in the background of Fairweather Friends is being played by Elton John. Kalopsia is even better live with a extended outro, the same with I Appear Missing.
the strings and production on the closer is simply genius composing. Didn't expect that from the band but was pleasantly surprised by it. My fave album by them and the title track is top 3 for me (my favourite song is Song for the Deaf)
Self proclaimed QOTSA super-fan here 😂 I’ve said some of this before but here are my opinions on the albums you haven’t reacted to yet by QOTSA. (SFTD and ...Like Clockwork are both 8/10 for reference) (if ya’ll can’t tell I’m passionate about the music I like lol) Self Titled, I personally don’t like this one at all. It’s not technically bad but it sounds a lot like Kyuss in my opinion and I don’t like that sound 5/10 Rated R, umm really good. Very... how do I even describe it? Eerie and almost psychedelic at times but at other times straight up QOTSA rock.(or a mix of the two) (In my opinion this is where they stopped being Kyuss or Gamma Ray and became QOTSA) 7.5/10 Lullabies T Paralyze, my personal favourite. There are 3 or 4 duds on this one in my opinion but the good songs are so amazing that it makes up for it and then some. So if you’re looking for a super consistent experience look elsewhere in my opinion. But if you want a ton of their best songs look no further. 9/10 Era, I love it but some hate it. It’s very mechanical sounding. Factory like. Very different from everything else they’ve done. (The bridge on Run Pig Run is my favourite piece of music ever) 8/10 Villains, very good... my only problem is I see missed potential. The new “thin” production sometimes feels like it harms the song. The big example of this for me is The Way You Used To Do. Some ultra killer songs on there though. Un-Reborn Again and Head like A Haunted House (among others) are killer in my opinion. 7/10 Sorry for the ultra long post Again all just one QOTSA superfan’s opinion lol.
I've listened to and loved QOTSA since Rated R came out and watching your videos makes me appreciate them even more. Who knew reaction videos could give you ACTUAL goosebumps.
I do music reviews on a couple sites, and counting down my 100 favorite songs of the 2010s, both Smooth Sailing and I Appear Missing made my top 25. The ending segment of this album is legitimately beyond compare in terms of how perfect it is.
BTW, these are super fun and fresh. You will not be disappointed with "Era Vulgaris" or "Lullabies to Paralyze". Definitely more guitar-driven and a little more 'rock' at times, but VERY VERY good albums. No doubt you'll enjoy a FIRST REACTION to them, and your followers will too!
After listening to Queens of the Stone Age and Radiohead back to back I notice a lot of similarities between the two that are kind of surprising an unexpected almost as if they were inspired by each other.
there's definitely a big crossover between fans of the two, me included they're both alt rock, but they're not actually that similar at a glance - definitely something there, though
I would recommend giving Era Vulgaris a listen, kind of an underrated album of theirs imo. Just listen to all of them tbh, as well as Them Crooked Vultures.
Great vid, great series, i really love your reactions and the details you catch in it!. Keep it up!. A little detail that maybe not many may know, asides the collaborations in the record that im sure others will post: Kalopsia has a nice background story, as i've heard or read from Homme itself time ago. He admires Alex Turner as his pal, but most of everything for its lyricist capacity (wich i'm sure you've also noticed haha). And in a hangout to make something for the LP, Josh asked Alex for something "interesting" to talk about to match the mood and his feelings of the album. Then, Alex replied him to talk about Kalopsia, wich surprised Josh cause he doesn't know anything about it. So, Alex explained the meaning to him, and was love at first sight to write a song from. Apparently Alex wanted to make a song about it a while ago (maybe during Humbug era, but it's my guess) but he couldn't make it fit through any of Monkeys albums moods.
Great video. And dude, you have to watch a few live performances of I Appear Missing, it's even better live. Also, you should listen to Lullabies to Paralyze or Era Vulgaris next if you're going to do more Queens reactions. Lullabies is like a walk in the woods at night and Era Vulgaris is just fucking weird.
You should watch ...like clockwork the movie. It’s not really movie it really it just pictures each of these songs perfectly. Highly recommend that. It has more creepy animation as well so that’ll get you into it
I just love watching these reaction videos! Even though I know the albums and have heard every song on them like a million times ... seeing someone so passionate about good music appreciating them for the first time makes me listen to them again just as i was when I first fell in love with them (if that makes any sense) Btw , have you heard about I Don’t Know How But They Found Me , the new band by ex Panic! Member dallon weekes ? They’ve just released like 4 songs but they are incredibly promising. Also you’d love the album violent things by his former band The Brobecks ... im not asking you to make a video reacting to it , as I don’t think there are too many people who even know them but seriously everyone should !!!!
Love your reactions! :D I'm here for the Radiohead stuff, but Era Vulgaris and Lullabies to Paralyze are gread QOTSA albums that you should also check out! :)
I'm loving these reactions man! If you get around to it, I'd love to see you react to Radiohead's Hail to the Thief and QOTSA's Lullabies to Paralyze which are my favourite albums of theirs and both so very underrated!
had i been around when you did this, i would've blown Fairweather Friends up for you. second favorite song on the album for me (after I Appear Missing). this albums is filled with brilliance, and in comparison w/Songs For the Deaf, it's more intimate and makes us FEEL more. SFTD had a detached feel that was, IMO, intentional...it being a narrative of sorts for going on a bender while driving from LA to the desert, with only the radio and memories of tortured relationships as company. Clockwork was more about reaching in a grabbing you early, then stroking you with Vampyre, then coming back again & shaking the shit out of you, and then washing over you with I Appear and LC. it's why it was an instant classic of an album. as was Them Crooked Vultures, BTW. last 2 songs of THAT album are inseparably perfect with one another (Gunman & Spinning in Daffodils). if you haven't, gotta check that out.
You know what. I think you should do reaction videos to the rest of what Josh Homme has made. Really liked these videos and the ones from Song for the Deaf.
Perhaps start from the first album and work through the collection. You’ll see the progression. Each album is great in its own way. Also consider listening to the desert sessions albums as well. And maybe even going back to Kyuss. When you put the whole body of work in perspective (Homme in particular), you will appreciate it even more. Qotsa is the only group I have not gotten tired of and still love listening to .... after 17 yrs of being a fan.
just in case it wasn't already fairly obvious, elton john was doing backup vocals/piano in fairweather friends. also checking out their debut album or Rated R would be awesome. honestly their all good
I recommend you see the animation they did for the album! Edit: Also Lullabies to Paralyze! So unrated album but so amazing a the same, it’s a transition between songs for the deaf and Era Vulgaris (witch is before ...like clockwork ) but you should make a video of this one!
I’m thinking about reviewing your latest album on my channel, I listened through it recently. In my opinion your best yet. If anyone is reading this and has not listened to Nightwalk’s latest album yet. Do it you won’t regret it. (Loved the reaction again, Kalopsia and I Appear Missing are my favs on this album)
Smooth Sailing & I Appear Missing are one of my favourite pairs of songs along with Paranoid Android & Subterranean Homesick Alien (OK Computer) and Brain Damage & Eclipse (DSotM) For an album by another artist: Elbow - The Seldom Seen Kid It's a fantastic album that is significantly warmer instrumentally and lyrically than any of the albums you've reacted to so far. Even with warmer instrumentation, there's no lack of experiments in tone and sound palette as the group uses plenty of strings and horns across the album
You must listen to Kasabian! Sometimes compared to Muse, it's different actually but equally great :) Recommend especially album called WEST RYDER PAUPER LUNATIC ASYLUM!
If you're looking for another QOTSA album to listen to (not necessarily react to), I highly recommend Rated R. It's a more stoner/psychedelic version of Songs For The Deaf, with a lot more chaos and weird moments, but trust me. You'll love it eventually. Better Living Through Chemistry is my second favorite QOTSA song after I Appear Missing and Josh Homme himself said that I Think I Lost My Headache is the best song he has ever created
“That’s one of the best tones I’ve ever heard on guitar,” I find myself saying that quite frequently with Josh Homme
Homme is probably one of the few guitarists that have midas touch
Lasertoast loooool
I Appear Missing is one of the best songs of the decade.

Tony Ponder also i would REALLY love him to listen to Them Crooked Vultures
Oh what I would do to hear this album for the first time again
Couple suggestions I haven't seen yet:
QOTSA live at Gonzo 2007
Them Crooked Vultures
Whether you make a video or not, these are worth checking out
Josh plays his guitar through a bass amp which gives it the fuzzy and gritty sound.
I describe smooth sailing the same way, it’s on my walking playlist lol
I recommend you see the animation they did for the album!
pablo eduardo Yes! That medley, with artist, Boneface's animation, is fascinating.
just in case it wasn't already fairly obvious, elton john was doing backup vocals/piano in fairweather friends. also checking out their debut album or Rated R would be awesome. honestly their all good
Smooth sailing reminded me of the 70s
I appreciate that you love Smooth Sailing as much as I do
(I BLOW MY LOAD OVER THE STATUS QUO, HERE WE GO)
Michael Schumann is one of my favorite bass players
I recommend you see the animation they did for the album!
Edit: Also Lullabies to Paralyze! So unrated album but so amazing a the same, it’s a transition between songs for the deaf and Era Vulgaris (witch is before ...like clockwork ) but you should make a video of this one!
Hi what was the song playing in the background when you were talking about the last song?
Kalopsia has a Trent Reznor feature, and the reason that piano was so prevalent on Fairweather Friends was because Elton John was on it.
trents voice on kalopsia and fairweather friends is incredible
I’m thinking about reviewing your latest album on my channel, I listened through it recently. In my opinion your best yet. If anyone is reading this and has not listened to Nightwalk’s latest album yet. Do it you won’t regret it. (Loved the reaction again, Kalopsia and I Appear Missing are my favs on this album)
IF YOU SEE THIS I NEED MY VILLAINS album... OH AND YOU MUST WATCH THE APOCALYPTIC ANIMATION
Smooth Sailing & I Appear Missing are one of my favourite pairs of songs along with Paranoid Android & Subterranean Homesick Alien (OK Computer) and Brain Damage & Eclipse (DSotM)
For an album by another artist: Elbow - The Seldom Seen Kid
It's a fantastic album that is significantly warmer instrumentally and lyrically than any of the albums you've reacted to so far.
That’s Mikey shoes boy!
I have to say kalopsia is my second favorite from the entire album because of that tasty piano solo
I love In Rainbows so much! Already hyped
I’d love to see you react to their self titled album. Its one of mt favorites
