I said this elsewhere but, while everyone's constantly arguing about whether the traveler can speak or if it ever will or why it never does, I'm like, what are you talking about? it talks to us every day.
I felt like that was the Traveler talking to Cayde, just in the form of Sundance cause that’s what he understood. That’s how the Witness was able to interrupt the connection so abruptly, cause it was already torturing the Traveler. The Witness merged many to make one all powerful, the Traveler fragmented from one to make many all powerful
Agree about it being the traveler talking to cayde since it straight up says “im what you wanted me to be” in response to cayde “is that really you?” In the lore for ergo sum, it refers to traveler being confused, not understanding how to communicate with humanity which could be why whenever we make contact, it’s always through visions. It doesn’t know how to communicate, it also doesn’t understand basic things like why humans worship it, why we question it not doing anything.

The most emotional cutscene I’ve seen, playing the first Destiny with friends I’ve lost (rest in peace…), clearing through Crota’s end with them, and King’s fall.. man, the only best friend that stayed was our Ghost in the game. Kept in touch with the other friends I met in LFG, 2 of them I served with, met them in person and we still hung around. 10 years comes a long way… That cutscene really hit home for us, I hope it did for all of you guys ❤️🙌🙏💯 eyes up guardians
I think this lends itself to theory that ghosts are souls of those who died before the collapse. When people die their souls go inside the traveller as long as they embraced the light. Don’t necessarily need light powers, but just have a connection with the traveller. And people in the golden age did, thats how the traveller was able to bring in a golden age. But during the collapse, the traveller put the most intelligent into ghosts, then they went out and to find their guardian. A guardian who had bravery and was willing to sacrifice themselves for others. Thus making a pair. Ghosts and guardians are both dead people from the collapse and before. But they cant remember anything.
This is a good point for that theory. I personally believe that the Ghosts are a form of souls from the precursor race who gave themselves into the becoming the Witness. This would help to explain the moral complexity of some of our Ghosts and Guardians. Imaru was a jerk of a Ghost well before he resurrected Savathun as confirmed by our Ghost.
NGL that moment when your ghost dies was hard on my feelings, after all this time side by side it's become a part of your character. I knew from the beginning of the season that Cayde wasn't gonna be here indefinitely, it was foreshadowed and the detail that gave it away for me was the light in his eyes, pure white light just like the Traveler's instead of its original light blue hue. I'm sad that Cayde "sacrifices" itself but at the same time I'm relieved because he's at peace and chose his own fate and my closest friend, my ghost gets to survive and stay with me. I'm grateful for the Bungie team, devs, designers, scenarists etc, they all delivered so much for The Final Shape and the story was touching in many ways. I'm curious as to what we'll uncover in the first Echoes episode but the part I'm the most hyped for is the 3rd episode, Heresy with the hive gods. I've always felt like the Dreadnaught still had some part to play, looming there, forgotten.
There’s an AU fanfic I discovered that perfectly captures what the Ghosts are. Titanomach chapter 34, I believe. To paraphrase, they’re like echoes of their Guardians. I guarantee you that Ghosts are our souls. They lack the knowledge of their origins like us and are only allowed to resurrect a specific person. Uldren never had a Ghost until he died in forsaken. The traveler (upon entering Sol) has some kind of ability to harness all lost souls and then put them into Ghosts- to then bring back specific people to defend it. This theory makes the most sense!

Yes you're right The Witness merged many into one being, to become one singular powerful being. While the Traveler split into multiple beings it seems, to give power to many.
I'd think that was cool, butsome how it seems most or no ghosts could get to neptune really and their powers relied on the veil, so it could maybe cause some issues if they tried to sync up.
He doesn’t have remains to revive except his core so I don’t think he can. He knew it hat he was giving up so that wouldn’t really honor the sacrifice he made. Would be cool if he was one, but it wouldn’t be the same guy.
"with each one's passing, a part of me returns." Savathun is intentionally "sacrificing" her lucent hive -- tricking us into fighting them, and destroying them -- as a way to give their Light back to the Traveler, to make it strong again.
Once again, we see the Gardener and the Winnower's ideologies at play. The Winnower seeks simplicity by whittling down to a singular perfect outcome, consolidating power to one entity. The Gardener sees beauty and strength in complexity and multiplicity, spreading her power to many. Tetrahedrons are the simplest three dimensional objects, spheres are complex and infinitely subdividable. Sword Logic vs. Bomb Logic.
I have always felt the creation of Ghosts was way more complex. What I believe happened was Clovis used his tech to create ghosts in a last ditch effort to fight the Witness, or the Darkness, to pinch off pieces of the Light and to act as repositories of that power and enable the resurrection of warriors while also keeping that Light from returning to the Traveler and crossing that final barrier. Since he used Darkness, Veil, inspired tech to capture and contain that energy, that is why the Witness was able to harness that connection and enter the Traveler. Without the Ghost, they never would have made it inside without riding the Veil into it with both the Traveler and Veil reunited as one.
I used to think Ghosts were the result of consciousnesses of the Witness being separated from the collective by the Light, having their memory wiped, and funneled into fragments of the Traveler. That this was why the Witness left, for fear of destruction, until it could find a way to subdue the Traveler to enact its plans. It would have continued the theme of irrational forgiveness we'd seen before.
The Veil was in the solar system during the Collapse. So it stands to reason that after repelling the Black Fleet, the Traveler used its link with the Veil to create the Ghosts.
@soundcloudpandapandawa2997 Hmm, yeah. Unveiling didn't really spell out what the new rule was, other than it rewarding complexity, only that the Gardner and the Winnower could influence the game through that rule.
Sonthing to point out is when a ghost dies it goes back to the traveler. Also their risen does aswell so if all ghosts died then their risen aswell the traveler would have more then it started with. Also with the darkness in the traveler setteling aswell i think the traveler is going to be very interesting in the future
Crazy thought but here’s my train of thought: The Witness uses the Veil/Darkness to absorb all of his race into one being, seeking purpose. During snd since the amalgamation, anything that went against the plan was culled (the Dissenters) from the whole. What if the culled were gathered in by the Traveller and, in its final stand against the Witness, it unleashed all those souls in the form of Ghosts, to seek out worthy humans who would be able to stand against the Darkness as Guardians. So in my view it’s possible the Ghosts contain the souls of the Dissenters but they had no memory of ever being part of the Witness’s race until the Guardians entered the Traveller and started seeing visions of the veiled statues. I know it’s a nonsense theory but it just dawned on me when Evaze talked about how the Ghosts were created in a final act by the Traveller before it went dormant.
My theory was that ghosts were actually the souls that were taken by the Traveler of humanity that died during the collapse. Each one is looking for their unknown best friend who they would've, if alive, found they would be best friends in the real world. Like it's kinda hard to explain. For example, imagine each gaurdian who has yet to be found has one of those best friend necklaces cut into an extremely unique shape, while their ghost has the other half of said necklace. However the ghost has never seen the other half, and is looking for the one person who has it. I mean, the theory mostly fits. Because the ghost has never seen the other person before, but claims that in non verbatim terms "I know as soon as I find you" My theory is kinda hard to really put into words, but it makes sense if you were in my head.😅
the way the ghost describes birth is the exact same way cayde describes his own. Given that Cayde operated as a quasi-ghost, I think the reason ghosts find their particular guardian is because that guardian is THEM before they died. The ghost is the soul of the risen guardian.
Have you noticed, that Ghosts have individuality? Temprament? and that Just as Guardians can be coruupted such as Dredgen Yore was, so too can Ghosts? They are more than mere souls, they are spirits as much as we are!!
I feel like, when the gardener said they were gonna change the rules of the game by being more active in another excerpt that was that was the birth of the traveler or ghosts. Funny enough Rick n Morty may have been on to something when they tried to use heave as an energy source which might kinda be what the traveler is, a manifestation of the afterlife or at least heaven in the universe of Destiny, that empowers those it deems worthy for the sake of itself and the universe
6:30-6:50 I do actually like how Osiris takes on a teacher role to Nimbus as much as I don’t like Nimbus I do think that there is potential for the character
i once thought the traveler is kind of cruel. abandoning an entire spiecies leaving them with their doom even thought she were the one who brought that doom to them, and then she finally do something after the doom she brought to humans..... she created the ghosts. but if she had created the ghosts she can recreate them again after they die but she just choses to ignore.....to turn a blind eye to the suffering she brought...... but now i understand.... i mean not literally i didnt cut off pieces of myself like she did to create ghosts but..... if ever a torn out piece returns to me i dont think i could tear it apart again. after all she did her own sacrifice after a long time of running away in fear, trying to find a glimps of hope......... im having some kind of mixed emotions right now. p.s. : im sorry if there is any grammar errors in my comment..... english is not my mother language :)
I guess ghosts are pieces of the traveler. Without the veil, they have no memory, just like the Traveler. They think that the Traveler is their mother when they're literally part of it as a whole. The traveler has many voices, through our ghosts. Our ghosts are the ones giving us direction against the forces of darkness. Our ghost however has experiences both the light and the darkness in perfect harmony, THEN the memories start to come back to it. In short, ghosts are mini travelers.
Ghosts are souls captured by sol over eons who forget their past lives and repurposed by the traveler. Even guardians after they die (lose their light) are repurposed as ghosts to resurrect guardians. Part of the Winnower and Gardeners game.
Pera, os fantasmas so aparecerao quando a escuridao atacou os humanos? eles não existirao antes? Google tradutor: Wait, will ghosts only appear when darkness attacks humans? Did they not exist before? o viajante esta criando almas a partir da alma dele ou ele esta coletando almas e adicionando a luz nelas? Is the traveler creating souls from his soul or is he collecting souls and adding light to them?
Just had an epiphany watching this. Hopefully those who are more well versed in the lore can verify or debunk any of this. If ghosts in fnction can bring to life things without a body or a soul and are avatars of the traveler sharing the same function. Was the traveler possibly doing at a larger scale what the ghosts were doing at a smaller scale (giving the 9 shape and form?). Could a fully functioning and healed traveler give the Nine living functioning forms? Edit: also about sundance and the traveler talking through ghosts and zavalas anger about the traveler being silent and not giving answers: It heavily reminds me of the "footprints in the sand" allegory about someone questioning why there were only one set of footprints in the sand during thier darkest times and then the lord answers "because it was then that i carried you" it would make that scene where zavala is asking his ghost would it bring back his son if it could and the ghost saying no that much more powerful and impactful.
Through us fighting the witness and and all the other races, and us needing to blend the darkness and the light, we are becoming the winnowers final form. The Apex predator. The epitome of the sword logic. Even though the light started us on this path, we have become the winnowers proof of the game being necessary.
true but i dun think the stuff we saw of the witnesses conference with calus was meant for us to hear i suspect the traveler did something to make us able to eaves drop on them cause remember the witness wanted the veil destroyed not captured and we also know that savathun stole it and left it for them to find problem is why perhaps a backup power generator?
I have to wonder. Is Ghaul in the Traveler? Is he there? He took the Light by force and transcended to become a being of Light. Then the Traveler awoke and smote him. Blew him away like a candle flame.
I think its safer to assume he is gone. That stolen light was corrupted light, but it was destroyed so savagely. The traveler could shoot a beam at ghaul, but it blasted the whole galaxy with light which awoken the dark fleet. Its weird to go towards that ghaul survived when traveler acted right then and there to get rid of it even if it could just be one among many reason for that action.
If what I heard of the lore in The Final Shape, the damaged parts of Traveler were parts it shed during the Collapse when it was infected by The Darkness. One such piece became the shard we found in the EDZ. It's that shard that also allowed us to wield The Darkness without being corrupted as well, since it was Light infected with Darkness. It's entirely possible that Ghosts came from those shed parts too. But we don't know.
hmm is there is an after life for beings that are connected to the light, is there one for normal beings? like the eliksini and humanity? and what of those of darkness? where will the awoken go when they die?
Because lightfalls campaign told us very little. Do you remember what the radial mast is and what it does/did? I don't think anyone does & was introduced to kill Rohan moving the plot along. 😂 we've always known how the ghosts were made we just never knew the minutia of it all.
As a reply to both comments. I am aware that they didn't tell us much about the veil. I even understand the frustration. My frustration with that argument is that it's been 10 years. So if we are just getting some lore answers about the ghosts or the traveler. Why did anyone expect to get anything about the veil in its first introduction?
hmm so in theory given what the travlers messages seem to say, if all ghosts are totaled then the travler could remake them all again by once again cuttign the parts off
Question. I'm not up on the lore, so this may have already been answered. But is the traveler the gardener or not? like how the witness is not the winnower?
@@garypalmer997the traveler could just be a natural paracausal entity like the veil unlike the witness, since we know the witness is a “man-made” paracausal being
What if all this lore we read about traveler, is the actual gardener describing the traveler? Now that is a twist. Be it uses the term 'you', not talking about the gardener itself but about traveler.

the way the ghost describes birth is the exact same way cayde describes his own.
Unrelated to this video. But during the ghost recovery mission on the pyramid on the moon. It hints that like many believe, Nezerac is still alive
Ghosts find guardians-> guardians + ghosts die-> both are returned to life-> both are revived as ghosts. 2 for 1 soul recruitment.
@Evaze have you finished the lost ghosts missions? Some juicy dialogue about Cayde and Maya Sundaresh
Which dialogue? I cant recall but I played it. Can u quote me?
Even though the light started us on this path, we have become the winnowers proof of the game being necessary.
true but i dun think the stuff we saw of the witnesses conference with calus was meant for us to hear i suspect the traveler did something to make us able to eaves drop on them
cause remember the witness wanted the veil destroyed not captured and we also know that savathun stole it and left it for them to find problem is why perhaps a backup power generator?
During the final campaign mission there are plants which are ordered in the encounters. I wonder if that’s connected to the flower game
I havent changed my ghost since i put sagira shell on it… chicqouuuu!
keep the good work guardian!
Where do you get these traveler visions?
I was hoping cade might become the one who puts ghosts back together. Not disappointed in what we got though
If the Ghosts are fragments of the Traveller, do you think the damaged area under the Traveller is a result of all the Ghosts it created?
If what I heard of the lore in The Final Shape, the damaged parts of Traveler were parts it shed during the Collapse when it was infected by The Darkness. One such piece became the shard we found in the EDZ.
It's that shard that also allowed us to wield The Darkness without being corrupted as well, since it was Light infected with Darkness.
It's entirely possible that Ghosts came from those shed parts too. But we don't know.
I cried. No shame.
Meanwhile, the thousands of Hive Lightbearers we’ve killed just chilling in the afterlife: 😡
so basically, the precursor species used the veil to fuse into 1 being, and the traveler used its light to split itself into the ghosts?
hmm is there is an after life for beings that are connected to the light, is there one for normal beings? like the eliksini and humanity? and what of those of darkness? where will the awoken go when they die?
The witness is just many in one but the Traveler is one in many
If we are just learning "what ghosts are" why was anyone complaining about the Veil?
because we know what ghosts are just not their exact origin. we knew nothing about the veil really
What about the 11 other guardians that permanently lost their ghosts and Light?
Awesome story telling my guy.
It’s easy. Ghost and the traveler are the opposite of the witness. One that split into many, instead of Many that merged into One
do we know why the traveler stay?
The dove being trapped in darkness actually made me cry...damnit
hmm so in theory given what the travlers messages seem to say, if all ghosts are totaled then the travler could remake them all again by once again cuttign the parts off
R.I.P. Dinklebot
Love your videos bro
Question. I'm not up on the lore, so this may have already been answered. But is the traveler the gardener or not? like how the witness is not the winnower?
Not directly but it’s unlikely
@malikfranks7382 if that's true. Then who or what is the traveler? A great machine or a person(s), and how did they become it?
@@garypalmer997the traveler could just be a natural paracausal entity like the veil unlike the witness, since we know the witness is a “man-made” paracausal being
The traveler might me a just another player ing the Flower Game
What if all this lore we read about traveler, is the actual gardener describing the traveler? Now that is a twist. Be it uses the term 'you', not talking about the gardener itself but about traveler.
It's kinda crazy. Darkness merged a people together to create the witness. Light divided itself to create a people.
Guardian. There you are
The Ghosts are the consciousness, or souls, of those that died during The Collapse.
But in the end,
The Light you take
Is equal to the Light
You make
What is the Traveler afraid to remember?
Quite literally our soulmates
I like ya vids g
Jiva.
"If the tip of the hair were to be divided in to one hundred parts and each part was divided into 100 more parts, that would be the dimension of the Jiva (soul)". Śvetāśvatara Upaniṣad (5.9)
The self, or identity/ego, a speck of Dark, wreathed in Light.
What else could they be? Great vid.
They're souls from loved ones
Hell yah
Plus 250 clan xp
My bestest buddy
The ghost guardian interactions could have been so much better in this franchise . A buddy buddy system ruined by a ghost who wants to take over 90% of conversations.
I was really hoping for a "different" outcome for SpongeBot... Looks like it's still stuck with me...
Ghosts? What are they? They are just little guys, doing little guys things!
Haha divine whole.
The cutscene with Ghosts coming out of the Travelere reminded me of pollen
