Also, i am thinking i will make the 2 smaller sliding drawers instead of one large one like you did. One to hold the Propane stove and paraphernalia. The other to hold camping cutlery and stuff. Basically a compact version of the old tailgate chuck box in my setup. Can also put folding legs beneath the drawers for support when extended.
Interesting build. Learnt a lot! Thanks! Question: I want to retain the possibility of using the 2nd row seats when not in camper mode. is it possible to make the platform in 2 parts? The rear part, comprising the portion behind the 2nd row will have the raised platform with storage. A hinged ply section extending from the rear storage box can fold over the seat back when its get folded down into camper mode. Making sense?
The issue was probably the drawers were too wide and this resulting in them not going in right. You can see the enclosure bows as you push them in. I actually build these for a couple of cars and sell them, and I would suggest using some kind of cad software to draw it all up, make sure the dimensions are accurate, and then make sure you cut the wood to exactly those sizes. Something like SketchUp is free, or at the very least take the math paper (with the squares) to draw it all out, with the sizes. Your drawer slides appear to be 1/2 and not 3/8 so thats how much space you want there to be between the wood to accommodate them. They have a little give both way, so if you cut it like 1/64 or 1/16 too big or too small, its not a big deal. The accurate cuts is the most important thing tho after you have the design figured out.
Thanks! Yeah I tried to draw it up on graph paper. I think the flexibility of the enclosure to move really ruined it...also, I think I put the wrong slides with the inserts...haha. I switched them around. In hindsight. My original build might have been fine. It slid ok, it would just get hung up. I always try to get Home Depot to cut as much of the plywood as possible with their huge plywood saw.
@@OverlandEngineer I'd be careful with that, they even specify it's not an accurate cut. If you can spring the money you can get something like the kreg accucut and a saw, I'd just find a local cabinet shop and pay them to cut the wood to size. Good luck if you do another one!
the backseats of my hyundai kona electric doesn't fold down flat, I don't know the first thing about building. I'm looking for a build that can be folded when not in use
There are definitely multiple approaches. I like the slide out method for the middle section rather than a hinging section because then you rely on the ceiling clearance for maximum dimensions and sometimes the middle row is larger than the height of the ceiling. I have some new platform content coming very soon so stay tuned!
@@petyweestraw To be honest, I thought most people did not watch them so I had not thought of it. My platform walkthroughs have done much better but if people are interested I can do that.

Why do people mount their hinges in a way that is exposed and visible to the users? Why not mount them in the seam between the joint? The range of motion is the same and the are not so unsightly when mounted hidden. So many people do it the way that is shown in the video. There must be a reason that I am not understanding. Even some of the commercial platforms systems leave the hinges exposed on the top. Can anyone explain why?
I like Otis a lot. But the camera work at the very end of the video made it impossible for me to put together the whole build. I really needed to see clearly how it all fit together and the camerawork just did not work

Awesome. Been out camping a lot lately and I’m definitely gonna improve on things with building a storage space like this!!!
Heck yeah! Check out my new aluminum extrusion series as well. Super sweet storage and the structure takes up less space than plywood!

Yeah, it is but the hinging part I think had to be two pieces rather than 1 to actually cover enough platform for a normal sized person
