Due to your recommendations I just picked up 2 magazines about New Zealand as well as a book about regional plants & animals from my parents' which I loved as a kid. And I had a stroll in the kids' section in the library & found great books with garden/animal illustrations 😊
Yay I'm so glad to hear!! Magazines are such a great source of reference imagery, and what a great idea to get one abut regional plants too - sounds so nostalgic! 🥰
An excellent selection of reference books! I hope you'll make more videos like this in the future. It's always fun to see what others keep on their bookshelf. 💜
Great video! Thanks for sharing, Katie. I too have the large Nature book & I drew fish from it just the other week too. That tree book made me drool! What a great find. I'm a book nerd, so I'd love to see more of your reference books please. Op shops are the best place to find them cheaply for sure :)
Thank you so much for watching and commenting! I love op shops for browsing books because you really do stumble upon some gems that you'd never find otherwise! I'll definitely share some more in the future 😊
I absolutely loved this video! I like to buy most of my books from a favorite used bookstore online, and it is so helpful to be able to see actual books, to get an idea of something specific to look for. As soon as you showed the Natural History book I immediately went looking at Amazon and my favorite used book store. The book was VERY expensive both places, but in looking it up at Amazon I realized I purchased it recently for my kindle when they had a great sale! Woohoo! I prefer my reference books in paper versions, but like I said I got it for a really great price, and the nice thing about ebooks, is you can zoom in on the photos to really see the details. I would so love to see more of your collection!
Aah thanks so much, so glad you enjoyed it! Seeing books in person is really helpful for me too, it can be hard otherwise to know just how many pictures are in there or the style of it all! So glad you were able to discover your kindle version - what a great resource for that book! Much lighter to carry around too 😂
This was really helpful. I have a load of great books that I never thought about using for painting reference. duh I also found it really helpful that you showed examples of your work from the reference. Time to dust off some books. Thanks Katie
I love these recommendations! Your sketchbook shows the wonderful inspiration from them. Please do record another video of more reference books you recommend ❤thank you 🌸
You are Awesome! Thank you for sharing info and tips! I’m a new to watercolors (57 years old) and I am excited! I am from Rochester New York USA and I found all these books on Amazon US.
Hahaha, the shocking thing is that even things in the 90s are considered vintage now!! 😱 The tree book is definitely one of my top three in all my collection!
I really want the natural history book just for reading - might have to put it on my Christmas list! I haven't done loads of reference drawing from books but I've done some from maagzines and it's nice to look at paper rather than stare at a reference on a computer screen. 😁
This was nice to see. I am interested in learning to draw birds. In addition to the bird book you mention, can you recommend a good book with photos of birds?
Thank you for watching! I have a second bird book I reference often called 'The Complete Book of British Birds' which is published by the AA & RSPB. It has some wonderful poses and a huge amount of birds in there at really good sizes for drawing from. They're not photos though, more illustrations, but I think they're much more detailed than the ones in the book I mentioned in this video 😊
These are great. Added a couple to my shopping list. You might like "Seeing Flowers: Discover the Hidden Life of Flowers" by Teri Dunn Chace, photography by Robert Llewellyn.

That tree book is amazing! I love books from the 80s, the illustrations are so nostalgic and beautiful.
Yes I totally agree! Such a wonderful time for books 😍
Totally agree, I also think having an actual book as a reference is a better experience for painting
Yes that's so true! I love having an open book in front of me compared to a screen 😊
how fun Katie, I've been waiting for this one, thanks for sharing !!
Aah thank you, so glad you enjoyed it! 🥰
