  • On the 11th of Rabi' Thani 561 AH (1166 CE), the great Saint, Shaykh Abdul Qadir al Jilani (r) passed away in Baghdad.
Veneration for this blessed personality reached unprecedented levels for someone born outside the first generations of Islam; in itself a marker of his sainthood.
He was unique in many ways; a Sayyid from both parents, Hassani and Hussaini respectively, born with an ajamite tongue but nevertheless became one of the most eloquent arabic preachers of all time, a staunch Hanblite and yet established the largest Sufi order ever.
To mark the occasion of his passing, please find this song, written in the style of Hazrat Sultan Bahu (the 17th century subcontinental Saint) whose vernacular Punjabi lyric and tune, haunt and mesmerize to this day. Sultan Sahab's (r) famous ode yearning for the Grand Shaykh and his city follows the english:
    King Jilani
    King amongst kings, king Jilani
My heart does so love thee!
    Hu…
A rose like this scented sweetly
    Must be Hassan, Hussaini!
    Hu…
Necks of saints at your feet lowly
They passed not this Lote tree!
    Hu...
Shayy 'un lillah, a beggar’s plea
    My Shaykh my Gawth Jili!
    Hu…
    Mudassir dreams just like Bahu
    Of you and your city!
    Hu…
