THANK YOU for watching! I did not expect this one to reach as many folks as it did, so really stoked about that. I love the feedback and I can’t wait to bring you guys more. 😊
PLEASE tell me you'll do more effects from BTTF! I was sad it was just one effect, it was very neat looking, but I would really love to see more! I subscribed. ❤️
I applaud your efforts, but this movie's practical effects in my humble opinion still hold up today, way better than effects from other movies of the era. I think the one shot you actually improved on though was the fixing of the fire trails scene when doc and marty both look back at the camera, they did look pasted in originally and you remedied that.
The constant camera shake is what I disagree with here (or perhaps I haven't seen enough 2022 movies). Besides that I think it's a quite good representation of a 2022 version. But when we talk about what of the scene really needed some extra time, it's only the one with them standing on fire. The rest is technically perfect, as it is :)
The camera shake makes this look like a bootleg filmed by someone in the audience...! The new fire trails are a big update compared to the original effect, that scene looks great!
I was going to reply that, its very distracting and you literally loose track on where to watch and see the real expression of the character. also, way to much bloom
There's a saying that "Practical effects look fake but feel real, and CGI looks real but feels fake" and I usually agree. I don't think the car should continue after the explosion, as the DeLorean stopping short is what gives the moment more drama (at least, to me). But, like most of the other comments, I believe you corrected the biggest issue and made it better: The last shot of them standing in the flames was a great improvement!
Fixing the shitty feet in the flames comping was the only thing that needed "fixing" in my book. The rest of the shots look way better in the original.
yeah, he's likes state of the art visual effects and so he would use the newest that 2022 has to offer like he has done with all his movies using the best available at the time he made them
I’ve been trying to come up with anything that would make _Who Framed Roger Rabbit?_ better with a modern production, and I’m really at a loss. It just always has looked how it _should_ look. The only thing I can think of is that it would make the production itself easier (while all still looking the same), getting the Toons into the real world and the real into the toon world, without as much need for the animatronics that interacted with real world objects for the Toons. But… that’s all, folks!
I've seen this movie so many times, and I still love it. No amount of rendition will ever make it better for me. The way I see it, sometimes just leave well enough alone.
Yeah, WTF does "dated" mean as a criticism - EVERY film is dated, EVERY book is dated - they all reflect the tech, the standards, the culture, and trends of the times they were made and written. To say "I can do it better now" is to ignore the culture in which such a film arose. Too much navel-gazing about the effects, and not enough cultural empathy for the characters.
Great video. You really demonstrate why we still love the movies from years ago and totally forget the modern over CGI efforts from today. Too much CGI, too much shake, too much exposure, too much lens flare. In days gone by, they had to really think about how a shot was laid down and it shows.
It's a bit like music : if you put too much stuff at the same sound level, it's very annoying and meh. What is great are the small quick bits that you add here and there that are almost unconscious but that the mind notices and craves. The idea is good there, but he 's young and cocky : he should now retry by toning everything down. Zooms in and out very small, effects around the car climbing up slowly to become an orgasmic Flash and so on. About Flares, did he not learn the star trek director's lesson ?
My humble opinion. First to shots, not necessary. Third shot, THANK YOU for fixing that!! Had me scratching my head for years. Over all, thank you for taking the effort to do so and I respect your passion for it!!! Keep it up!!☝️😌
I really liked the idea of the Delorean travelling through Doc & Marty as if it was in a different (out of phase) state, before completely disappearing into time.
Oh man I have no idea why but I'm glad the algorithm said I should watch this video! This was awesome! Great job on 2022ing it up! You did a great job! The shot of the DeLorean @4:18 was awesome in the original but HOT DAMN you made it look freakin amazing! Yea I agree that the reverse explosion scene was already great so I'm glad you did not mess with that but WOW thanks for this!
It pains me to break this to you, but Robert Zemeckis was heavily opposed to the use of electricity for the time machine, insisting the time travel sequence differentiates itself stylistically from the overused electricity effects of the 80s. The modern compositing when they're standing on the fire however makes the world of difference without ruining the effect: something a good remake would truly benefit from.
As both a SFX and VFX engineer I am more partial towards the practical effects. The high contrast that we paint props with to let them even register under the bright lights, those props that really do something magical in shot help the actors to give a real reaction. Creating motion control or camera control rigs is just fucking cool to do. And there’s just no replacement for massive set pieces. And these days I do more and more indie movies and it’s my actually combined knowledge of SFX make up effects, (electronic) prop making and VFX that combines the best out of both worlds. And we ended up winning Best FX and Best Film for a horror twice. So I guess we are doing something right.
When they turn Marty's camera is next to the remote control of the car, Doc tilts his back but when they zoom in this changes. Before the approach there is smoke that disappears and the sky looks black but in 2022 there are lens flares that are confused with smoke. the transition to the black sky background does not look natural.
Yep, this "standing on the fire"-scene is and was for me always the moment where it puts me out of the immersion. Everything else is pretty perfect in the old movies and shouldn't be touched, imho!
Dude - I just stumbled across this and, WOW. I'm a big fan of Captain Disillusion and your work is on par with his totally. I wish there was more to see, BTTF is one of my all time favorites too. I've subscribed!
You totally made your point! You showed that technology and cgi won’t ever be able to replace all the subtleties and imperfections that we, as human beings, will inevitably put into everything we do.. the perfection of being imperfect
Good job I honestly think the only thing that needed to be added was the scene you retouched of them looking back. that was done very very well! Minus the crazy zooms/camera shake!
great effort specially on the fire trail, BTTF is my favorite movie of all time. The Delorean though was I think over done with particles and effects to the point that you can not see and appreciate the car / time machine.

Thank you! Great work on fixing that. The rest is fine in the original form, but the look of them standing on the fire trails always bugged me. I mean, aside from thinking to myself, “Who the hell just stands in fire like that, even if you did see a car and a dog disappear in a reverse explosion? It’s fire! It burns stuff! Move!” 😄
Ngl idk what y’all are talking about but the remade version he made genuinely make it feel more realistic to me😂look back at the old one just feels comedically weird now Ngl💀it adds onto what they were trying to make but couldn’t due to it’s time, but doesn’t take anything away from the scene, just makes it look more epic
Back to the Future has been my #1 favorite movie since the day it came out! I absolutely LOVE the extra special effects! You did an awesome job! Can I please have your permission to use the clip here to add to my channel as a short? I'll give you the credit and acknowledge your channel.
I’m not an effects guy, but I want to try to give some constructive criticism. The big problem with rotoscoped bright light effects was they didn’t illuminate or reflect in the models. I saw a video where a group re-did the original Star Wars trench run, and the difference was huge when blaster bolts lit both the trench and the spacecraft (I think a little overdone, that seems a hard thing to tone down based on how common that is). The original shot here put a lot of stuff in front so the lack of illumination wasn’t very visible. Some lack of reflections were. The problem with this remake is there’s too much flashy stuff in the way now, making the DeLorean itself vague, and any improvements to the realism were obscured and irrelevant.
I think that because of acting on the blue screen, Marty turns around before Doc. You could make them rotate at the same time. If necessary, you should speed up the rotation of one of them or slow down the other until it looks natural.
The biggest difference between 80s movies and modern movies is the writing. It’s no longer about giving people what they want/are entertained by. Now it’s about telling people what they should see/learn from and if they enjoy it… we’ll that’s a plus.
@@noahgvfx Poland is great, my beautiful country ;)... which also has many fans of Back to the Future... I recommend the Polish TH-cam Channel BTTF Polska, probably the only channel in Poland almost entirely devoted to the BTTF trilogy
I'm sorry but it looks more fake than the original. That said that hologram of the car going through doc and Marty as like an after effect of the car going through time I think it's brilliant and would look fantastic if done in a more professional setting. Definitely a nice touch to the time travel effect
Now this is pretty good but I have a few problems with it. For the first scene the car feels slow and doesn’t feel like it’s moving that fast. The second scene is good but I don’t like the “car” still going even after 88mph, mostly due to the model being bigger for some reason. And the third scene is great maybe a little too much Lens flare, but other than that it’s good
There was this one scene in the second part where they return to 1985 and this is when they drop off lorraine on the hammock I believe. But anwyays, right when they travel back, the car is in hover mode and it descends, and there's a lamp post in the way, and you can see the transition between cgi car and real car. I think itd be great if u can somehow fix it. i just wanna see what it looks like
nice nice work, a bit heavy on the micheal bay lens flares and the overall blur/glow effect during the jump was causing a bit too much washout over the surrounding scene ( i would create a mask around that area u want to have this blur and soften it to limit the effect on the far edges of the scene, i think with a few tweaks it could be really good! I appreciate it.
Love it man! Great work. I think it would be rad if you spend more time on the split screen side by side comparison, before & after. Instead of just dropping it quickly at the end. I feel like its a disservice to all the awesome work you put into recreating it!
Nice 👍 One of my favourite movies, but even as a kid when it came out, that scene with Doc and Marty standing in the fire bugged me 😬 Everything else was perfect 👌
Hey, I had a notion while coming home from work - How about the Train Race sequence from Superman The Movie? Take care of the sped up motion error, stuff like that.
Hey dude, love what you did with this Looks amazing! Is it okay if you can do ghostbusters next? I know that they’ve practically done it in afterlife, but the proton stream and some of the ghosts like slimed look way too outdated. Understandable if it takes a while to do if you can, thanks and have a great day!
They've digitally remastered almost every other movie from the 80s. It would be awesome to see how Back to the Future would turn out today with all the awesome special effects Movie Makers have at their disposal now🤩
Good video and great effects, but Im so glad this movie was made back than. Its just looks so much more natural and therefore more believable. Movies using too much CG nowdays, they look wierd.
All this shows is that you can make digital effects look like optical effects and hand drawn animations. Well...that's the point of having extensive digital effects tools. The problem with effects in modern films is that the effects are overblown and don't enhance the storytelling - they distract from it instead. So instead of "they jumped into a time warp" you get "WTF just happened?"
I congratulate you for the effort. There is original continuity error. The wind in Doc's and Marty's hair when they turn their heads changes. Doc's hands also change position. It happens too fast to be possible. When going from a shaky camera to a fixed one, you can see the different times of production. Something similar happens in Star Wars SC 38 Reimagined with the insertion of new images. The tonality of the new scene is seen with pastel blue colors and the old one is very sharp and warm. The line of fire is very exaggerated before and after so it would be more realistic if it didn't burn the pants. Movies today go through a review team like the commentators on this video before going on the air, the only limit is production time. Maybe you can continue this work.
Honestly, I think the only thing that should be touched is the compositing. We have more fidelity in comp now but those OG effects themselves still look great as individual elements.
THANK YOU for watching! I did not expect this one to reach as many folks as it did, so really stoked about that. I love the feedback and I can’t wait to bring you guys more. 😊

Agreed! I never noticed it before, but in the original cut, the scene where they are standing in the fire looks really fake...especially Marty's legs.
I really appreciate this feedback! I also agree they did a timeless job with this film visually. Thank you for watching Rebecca!
Agree! I was very annoyed in CGI improved version about image being cropped. Like we see almost nothing else except a car when it is accelerating.
Yeah, but that annoying shaky cam he added does absolutely nothing.
100% agree. Fire shot looks great. I’ll take the original for everything else.
The constant camera shake is what I disagree with here (or perhaps I haven't seen enough 2022 movies). Besides that I think it's a quite good representation of a 2022 version.
