  • Join us for a fascinating day trip to Bodmin Jail, a must-visit museum rich with history and intrigue. Located near Bodmin Moor in Cornwall, Bodmin Jail was built in 1779 during the reign of King George III. This historic prison, constructed under the direction of military engineer Sir John Call, utilised over 20,000 tons of local granite from the Coocoo Quarry.
Discover the unique features of this jail that set it apart in its time. Each prisoner had their own room, with separate sections for men and women, hot water, and bright, airy spaces. Prisoners even earned money by selling handcrafted goods. By 1820, the jail had expanded multiple times to accommodate the growing number of inmates, adhering to laws that required different types of prisoners to be separated.
From 1856 to 1861, a new jail was constructed, featuring designated areas for men, women, a chapel, and debtors. Over time, the jail's purpose evolved, housing primarily debtors until 1869, when laws changed. The Royal Navy utilised parts of the jail from 1887 to 1922.
The women's section closed in 1911, and the last male prisoner left during World War One. Bodmin Jail finally closed in 1927, with demolition occurring in 1929. Throughout its history, 55 executions took place here, drawing crowds from afar. The final execution was of William Hampton in July 1909, after he was convicted of murdering his girlfriend.
