    Hi Papa Tom. See: Tenth Generation Dairyman. They've been running the new Robot Feeding System for a few months now. They built three silos, and have the whole automated system they built from the ground up. Located in Pennsylvania. (we've named them Rosie and Evie)

      This too is my only "Knowledge" of a feeder system. The lely Vector. Was curious about the capacity when he said 700 kilos. seemd mighty small. The Lely Vector can carry @ 20000 kilos per load. That's a WHOLE lot more. And as with the 10th Gen Farmer, Silos take up very little space; his were 130' tall. WOW!!

    Tom, thanks so much for sharing this farm visit. I’ve seen a lot of Lely farms, but not as many GEA robotic farms - am glad to see the differences. Not sure about price comparison, but I’m liking the GEA system better. I think once your time is freed up more, you can also do more tidying up projects around the farm, like those floor coatings under the feed if you want. France’s farm is practically spotless! Your farm would do very well with a system like that, time for some creative grant searching… 💷 Cheers from Houston, Texas

    I would have guessed double for the capital cost, when you start factoring feeder wagons, tractors. labour Providing you have the shed space and suitable yards. I can see a the sums adding up. Ironically the need for a cowman is replaced with an IT tech. BTW the fellow from Gea is super smart.

    Wow Tom, that was a seriously impressive dairy set up. Had to smile though when you mentioned "See Dad" when they talked about adding a little water to bind the minerals to the feed. 👍. Robots are great when they work like that but you still need the old school skills should something go wrong which is probably why the farmer hasn't got rid of his feeder trailer yet. 🤔.

    • @hughmarcus1
      @hughmarcus1 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@HammieNLdon’t forget a previous government incentivised farmers to increase cow numbers to unsustainable levels on the basis they could export slurry out of the country. When the neighbouring countries stopped in porting they were stuck. Hence the need to drastically reduce numbers to a level where their own soil can cope with the nutrients produced. With the high water table & all those open drains, I’m guessing compliance is a nightmare

But it is only the 3rd one I have seen, firsr one I seen was a lot more mechanical and only fed out twice a day basically replacing humans in the job but taking just as long. What a brilliant system, those cows looked happy and really healthy as well which is never a bad thing. Lots of people I dare say won't like it, but evolution in farming has been going on since the 1st plough was invented, the downside is that you don't need as many people involved, the upside, you don't have to pay wages or worry about someone not turning in.

    Great blog as always TP and we can clearly see that the cyber/digital dairy farmer has landed!!! Innovation in your sector and across many sectors of our agricultural landscape is moving at a pace. How can we ensure that digital / cyber security / safety is in place so that our for farmers, their businesses, their families and their livestock are safe from those criminal elements that would be looking to capitalise on farmings developing exposure on-line ! Hope to hear from you soon.

    At first I thought, 300 k nuts! But then I started to think about it and a feed wagon and half useful tractor in front of it is going to cost you 150k so if you think about it he’s getting an extra 3 kg a day out of a system suitable for 220 cows for 150k so realistically he could get 660 kg a day which is 240,000 kg a year and at 50 cents per litre that’s €120,000 per year, maybe we are the short sighted ones who haven’t put in this sort of system even allowing that most of us already have a feeder and tractor to pull it even if you just park it up and put in a similar system for those of us with a couple of hundred cows, even with interest your looking at less than a 3 year pay back and you save time! If maintenance costs are not too extreme this is a runner, it would be interesting to know how much electricity it uses and if the savings on diesel is covering this also. Regards from Ireland

    What’s rarely mentioned about Holland is that their soils are mostly deep peat. The reason it all needs managed now is that in times past they ‘harvested’ 2mtr of peat off the top. I wonder if they regret that now.

    • @dannyvandenakker8773
      @dannyvandenakker8773 2 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      if i am not mistaken, when peat dries it shrinks. So lowering the water levels to much is counter productive. The water management is a trade off for farmers, water quality and also maintaining houses. Some cities were build in the day with wooden poles under the footings. If those are under water they don't rot, but as soon as the water level drops and oxygen gets to the wood they start to rot. Its a difficult mix of different interests. And there is no clear answer. Farmers want lower water levels (earlier access with heavy machinery), cities want to preserve...

    Great video love to see all the red and white Holstein my problem with all the technology is everyone wants to be a farmer and not do the work and have contact with the animals and what happens when the motors start to wear out

    25:18 we looked at doing a batch milking set up, dad went to a farm in holland to see it but said that you spend all day moving cows around and need a high number of robots for the cows. We went for a traditional robot set up instead, best thing we did

    Some fantastic kit but you would need a standby generator. With my maintenance hat on I'm thinking there are a lot of things that can go wrong on a fully automated system. How long before farms need to employ a maintenance technician full time?

    How long ago did you visit this farm, I noticed you had your wedding ring on still, so it had to be 8 months or longer. Was a really nice farm and so clean. Sounds like you need to get poop scrappers and you will get your numbers down to almost 0. How Did that feeding cart run all over the barns? I didn't see any rails or tracks for it to follow. Also how do the cow's, equipment move over the ditched? Looks like you guys could put a few ditches on your farm, seems like it would help dry up some fields faster. Great video

      They only got married two years ago and poor kid is just gone one year old.
      Odd that TH-camrs open up their lives to camera then go silent as soon as something actually serious happens in their life that fans would be curious to know.
