I recently did one of these free courses for fun. I have been with the Language Unschool for over two years now and had never done any other course. An advertisement landed in my inbox for this free 8 week course promoting we would learn something about Porto. I thought that would be interesting so I signed up. (It never discussed anything interesting about Porto). I completed the course but thought of it as a holiday poolside exercise because really, it was pretty dumb and I already noticed it did not kick me into thinking. Yesterday I was in the supermarket and needed to know if something was salty or less salty. A scene had just been in this course. I knew I had answered correctly in the test but could I remember the correct words? NO! It just would not come up in my memory. Why, because I had lazily filled in the multiple choice and it had not stuck in my mind. Once home I looked it up and now I will never forget ‘Salgado’ and ‘Insosso’ . Catarina, I will never cheat on you again! 😊 Your way is the BEST.
And thus the prodigal child returns home.😇 You're a true Unschooler, Marjolein! Good to hear about this experience. By the way, "salgado" is, or at least used to be, in the ser vs. estar lesson: O mar é salgado vs. A sopa está salgada. - but then again, that's a dull example 😆
Spot on. Fast food is an excellent analogy. But we go to gamification when the alternatives are expensive and stodgy. I get the impression that many teachers here are rooted in old fashioned methodology, probably especially the ones in government institutions. There's a pedagogical approach that just isn't producing speakers. And the Portuguese don't help much, though now apparently fast to criticise. It's a strange kind of post COVID technology-accelerated state
Would you be comfortable with "tests" that are meant to be extra learning opportunities, not necessarily made for you to score 100%?
100 per cent???? Not likely, but sure, tests are a normal learning tool

They are not stodgy around here 😉, although I can get philosophical at times. Interesting insights, Sarah.
Que interessante para escutar e tentar apanhar o sentido geral e as palavras individuais.
E sim, quando a esmola é grande, eu desconfio também. :)
Quando a esmola é demasiado tecnológica a minha desconfiança aumenta .
I know I need to spend more time using the chats. How do I know? Because I make tons of mistakes and even freeze up in them.
you can only improve, if you practise speaking. The live chats are there to help you :)
